Our 2000-mile road trip across the USA in our Tesla Model Y Performance started out as an exciting adventure but quickly turned into a nightmare.
As first-time Tesla road trippers, our initial goal was to gauge how well this electric vehicle performs on a straightforward run before attempting a more complex cross-country journey.
Our goal was to learn if it is truly road trip-worthy or if we should explore other options.

Wow just wow thanks for sharing this. $220 charging costs for 2k miles? That would fill my Pacifica minivan 4 times and I would easily get 2000 miles out of it give or take. Your comment of ‘range anxiety’ nailed it. Appreciate your honesty in n sharing this. I will never by an EV. I thought having an EV saves on petrol or overall costs?

Cheaper if you charger are home, superchargers are expensive. It was a 2200 miles in total so the car was costing 11c per mile . A gas car doing 22mpg would cost $350 for the same trip so 16c per mile.

Shame that you're thinking of getting rid of the MY.. I've been trouble free in my Model Y for 2 years and prior to that, was trouble free in my Model 3 for 3 years. I've driven up and down the UK various times and never once had the worry or felt it impacted our journey to consider moving back to ICE or Hybrid. I guess it's all down to the lack of full infrastructure (including service stations) which sounds like the USA which isn't quite up there or as reliable as other countries. Thing is though, driving a ICE/Hybrid - you could get just as worse issues on a 2,000 mile journey, so it's all relative I guess.

We live near the Springfield, Va charging area you stopped at. My husband took a Tesla trip with a friend who owns one and they went to Pennsylvania. He tried to get a charge at a station that wasn't a Tesla charger and none of his adapters would work. So he had to drive out of his way to another charging station. Just seems like too many issues to be practical for road trips.

Sorry about your sprained ankle, and the problems with the car. Great that you posted this because it shares what trips could be like. We travel cross-country a lot. We've driven to Washinton State, Florida, Ga, several times. So, I don't think an only electric car would work across country through desert driving. Tesla has lots of chargers it seems. Must be the ones the government paid millions for and only got 7 installed must not have been done through Tesla. Elon Musk must be the only person in the country who can accomplish anything. Too bad he wasn't born here so he could run for the presidency!

Wow day one and it’s already a lot to deal with! Not sure I’d be doing that. Got a rental car when mine broke down twice. The first car was a hybrid. It was fantastic. Halved the petrol bill. It was a plug in hybrid. I tried, and failed to charge it after booking and pre paying at the hotel. The idea is great, but way too much messing for me. I drive 200 miles each way on university pick up. I do A roads. It would stress me no end having to look for chargers 😂.

Just watched the first 5 minutes. You didn’t use the advised planned route and know that the route you want to take doesn’t have enough chargers. And why rely on the car to calculate after a software update and not use a third party trip planning software as backup. Can’t wait to see why this goes wrong.😮 --------------- Ok watched it all, faults can happen to any car. Phantom braking, Tesla have no excuse should have been fixed years ago. Did you have a charge port adapter for CCS2 so you can use other chargers ? The trip seemed to go very well (apart from the fault) 👍 Hope your ankle is better, take care.

Thanks for taking the time to make your great video. I am really sorry that you hurt your foot, and I hope it recovers soon. Hopefully it is recovered by now. However, there are a few things in your video that are not good examples for the public who might be interested in an EV. I have driven across the country three times. And up and down the country three times, as well as taken many other long trips of over 500 miles. So I do have experience on long journeys and I would like to make some comments about your video. Thank you very much. 1) at the beginning of the video you said you’re bringing a rag to put around the charging cables because that is what you have seen on other KZbin channels. I don’t know if you did this or not, but this is not the right thing to do and is recommended not to do it by Tesla because it can cause issues regarding the safety and voltage of the charger. If you did do this, this may be the reason that you had your issue where you had to go to the service center. In fact, it actually sounds like that would be a cause of it. Regardless, things happen on the road, especially with long trips and with gas cars things happen even more than with EV‘s as there are much more moving parts. When that happens, we deal with it, the same way you dealt with getting the car repaired which they did in a pretty quick amount of time. I have had my windshield, or as you say, windscreen, cracked from rocks from a truck and one from the heat and I had to go to that service center to fix it. It’s just one of those things. There are very many things that can go wrong much more than an EV. I am sorry that you had that problem, whatever caused it, but things do happen on long trips. 2) You mentioned range anxiety. Many times you went off the route and just did what you wanted to do. If you follow at the Tesla Avenue tells you to do, you’ll never have to worry about any range problems. Will adjust and readjust as needed, depending on how much energy you’re using. Also, getting to a Tesla charger with three or 4% even is not a problem. People feel comfortable getting there with 15% or something to that effect, but with the Tesla network, you’re really never gonna find that the entire charge station is out of service. And if that was to happen, it would actually inform you right on the app, which I did have happen in Hattiesburg while they were doing maintenance on it while I was driving across the country, but you don’t have to worry normally you just go and even if you end up with a few percent or if you percent gets less depending on your driving or other issues, it’s not a problem. And if it is, they will route you the right way. 3) your wife mentioned about the windshield wipers. As Tesla’s self driving and safety features why on the camera that is behind the windshield, every now, and then the wipers will go on by themselves for a swipe to clear the camera of any kind of dirt block it. This is a safety thing and is really not a big deal. In major storm, sometimes you have to put the wipers on full blast yourself, but this is with many cars. 4) you said this was a relaxing trip because you were constantly having to watch what the car is doing and it’s charge. I find the opposite of this. Especially when you’re using Tesla self driving. I find the car tells when and where to charge and how long to do it. And if you just listen to what it says, you have a great drive, with very little to worry or think about. The car will never let you end up in the middle of nowhere with no charge. It just won’t do that. I don’t mean to be critical about your drive, but I do want to make certain points here. When I watch your videos, I see very little reason I would say I would not use an EV for a road trip. I’ve done it. My last trip across the country took me from LA to Chicago to Branson, Missouri to Florida to New York and back to LA over 10,000 miles with no problems whatsoever having to do with the car . I have the cheapest Tesla the rear wheel drive with only 278 miles of range and I’ve never had a problem. Again, I am sorry you had that one problem as far as your charging system getting fused which is an anomaly. However, just like a gas car anything could happen and much less can happen with an EV as there are hardly any parts, thank you and all the best and I really hope you keep your Tesla and road trip with it again if you need any advice or assistance, please feel free to reach out to me.

So I came back to this after your reply on the next vlog. I have heard of the phantom braking which has to be scary. Gas cars break more often and would that dealer really fix it that quickly and at no charge? I agree with you that long road trips still should be hybrid or per gas for now just because of range. Given charging and repair availability I would have kept the Tesla and traded in the Ionic with the CCS charging system. I thought it was a good and perhaps long test that your viewers (including me) needed to see. Thanks for the ride along.

seems like its a trip from charging station to charging station. Instead of enjoying the holiday, you're having to plan how to get from one station to the next. I won't be buying electric. Infrastructure isn't there, finding the right station for your needs, vandals taking the copper, poor resale value of the car if you can even sell it, I don't see anything positive about having an EV.

My feelings are that Disney complies with all the current. ADA rules and regulations and goes above and beyond with its DAS system. As far as international reservations for LL , agents will book them for you if you are staying on Disney property. If not, there are technical ways to get round the block, I am told, but I expect Disney will make changes to allow it anyway if there are workarounds.

I would have thought that the best car to do the road trip would have been in a tesla. And on the whole it looked great. You did manage to get a charger at every stop, yes you had to swap one or 2 to get the higher charge rate. But looking at it everything looked the best it could have been. The cars issue with the charger not charging was an issue but tesla did sort it pretty quickly. Gas cars can break down as well with a multitude of different reasons. I'm not having a go, I have an ev in the uk and love it. Maybe things are different in the US I don't know. @ThemeParkBazza that is a bummer! Tesla is the future. Within a few years, battery technology and infrastructure will improve to such a level that gas stations will go away. You should visit California/ Nevada/Arizona as charging stations are everywhere. Additionally, the air conditioner in your Tesla is by far superior to any other car, which keeps everyone comfortable!

@ThemeParkBazza additionally, I just came back from a trip in Orlando over the last two weeks. We had rented a VW SUV, and it was awful. Terrible power, air conditioner, and fuel range. We drove the majority of the state, and we couldn't wait to get back to our Model 3. We did enjoy Florida a lot!

Thank you for all your videos, including your retirement one. First, I would like to say I would not wish what happened to you during your road trip vacation to even my enemies lol . Sadly I have a similar experience except my video would be Do Not road trip with a Ford. Lolol. We had it afford that was about a year old. This was a new model that had been out for two years while road tripping from the West Coast to Toronto Canada, and pulling out of a hotel parking lot. The engine dropped. And I mean literally I was going like 3 miles an hour went over speed, bump, and boom slammed on the brakes found out the bolt that holds the engine sheared and the engine fell on the axle. Luckily nothing was bent, and we were up and running in a few hours.. we found out that this was a known advisory issue and when vehicles of my make and model and year come in, they are to review it and between the start of the advisory and my last oil change in lube it came up. So they never looked at that part and worked notified of that part at that time. So bad things happen to good people, but I would love for you to review your first 42 minutes before the issue would you change the title? lol I do understand the issue of supplying voltage to an EV vehicle and spikes can happen. I’ve had one happen in my house that blew out our TV in fridge once. But Would like to add that since living in my small town for 15 years three times the local Kroger‘s has put diesel fuel in the underground non-diesel storage . So for three days over 15 years, people got diesel in their vehicles and it pretty much destroyed their vehicles. Similar to all vehicles. My opinion of your first two minutes is, we’re having a great time. please keep up the good videos as I watch all of them

Ay up both. I couldn't get over the scale of the States when we were over there so I guess the distance between chargers (and service centres) is a big part of the range anxiety. While you're in the UK I think you'll find it a lot more enjoyable. From the Midlands, we've done Cornwall and a Netherlands road trip in our little MG4 and had no problems. Instead of going for the most efficient charging time, we just aim for a rapid charger when we're down to sub-20%, charge to 80-90 (no matter how long) and carry on. I think the Tesla app tries to overcomplicate things. But, as I say, we are very lucky as we're in a much smaller country so we're never too far from a charger. Oh, and by the way, sorry we missed your meet up - I'm afraid the weather beat us (are you doing any in the UK?)

Sorry to hear about your experience and I hope you are well healed now. I hope to see you at one of the meetups soon given I too live in ORL (or maybe see you two at a stoplight). I have made several x thousand long road trips in my Model S - up and down the East Coast and twice to Minneapolis (stopping many times at the same SCs you stopped at). I am glad my road trip experiences have been very enjoyable and relaxing with the FSD. Agreed, a few issues continue but I am never going back to gas. On my first trip, my range anxiety was high (in 2019 when there were many many few superchargers). However, after the first trip, I adjusted and it just disappeared. Looking forward to your next vlog and hearing more of how you are spending your retirement time. BTW, loved how you both planned your retirement so well in advance.

@@ThemeParkBazza mine has radar which I believe is now deactivated with an FSD update. Phantom breaking is an issue and it’s getting less frequent with new updates. He moved back here to California as costs went up there, no houses to buy, apartments to rent, pay was really low and California weather has been better (cooler in summer) last 2 years, no twisters too. Governor here is horrible, just horrible. Anyways he uses little gas and electric recharges driving around. We always take his car sightseeing around here. I have a Model Y. We live here in Virginia and I do understand a lot that you went through. I've experience phantom braking but I usually recover fairly quick and get up to speed. But that is a major downfall of going vision only in a Tesla. Overall your trip was good but those chargers not charging at the optimal speed is an issue..especially if you're at a 150kw station because you split the power. I try to navigate to all 250kw stations if I can. I view the battery/contactor issue like I view my gas car. I've been on a road trip with my gas car and had transmission problems but the worse was when I was driving normally and blew a rod in the engine. And I'm one for making sure it has a good oil change regularly and more and always prep the entire car for a road trip...but on that day..none of that mattered.

So glad to have this informative video to justify cancelling all of my future Tesla road trips. Though I've never experienced any issues on our family's several 2500+ mile road trips across europe, this has shown that it simply isn't worth trying..how long until we get caught out? Our Daughter will be disappointed to not see the Swiss alps this year, but hey she got to see Portugal and Spain a couple of months ago and that will have to be the end of it. Seeing the otherside of road trips has led me to the conclusion that it's not worth bothering. For all the struggle and challenges that I'll be avoiding thanks to this vid I am eternally grateful. Your experience has shown that anyone even attempting this has got to be mad . Already booked the campsite down the road as we now have so much spare time where we'd otherwise be driving to other countries. Looking forward to more local holidays (ideally in walking distance) until we trade in the Tesla for a reliable and more capable petrol car.
