I've been a commercial diver for over 23 years, this last year spent as a "deck jockey". I've used a Sub, a Tuna, an Ecozilla and a Sinn as my back-up to my dive computer. I switched to using my silicone oil filled DW5600 around 2010-ish. It's a mess during battery changes but my DW has survived literally hundreds of dives.

You have to use a very thin oil in this mod (Type 200 50 CST Silicone Oil as an example). In addition with oil mods like this, with quartz watches, you significantly reduce the battery life. The hands have to work harder to push around in an oil filled watch thanks to a change in the fluid dynamics (more drag just like when you are underwater). The cool thing about oil mods is that they reduce refraction so the dial is considerably more legible and can be viewed from extreme angles. It is messy to replace the battery, and you may need to top up at that point. Getting oil out of an oil filled watch is very difficult so this is pretty much a 1 way modification, you best like it when you've committed yourself. As some have mentioned if your watch is in a warm environment, it can expand and push oil past the pushers. Ideally you need to keep it around ambient room temperature or below. In the sea, you shouldn't have a problem keeping it cool enough. When oil gets warm its viscosity changes. Another annoying thing with a mod like this is a potential air bubble that you may have difficulty removing. U-Boat, an Italian watch company, have designed their watches to have a separate battery section from the oil filled inner watch to make those battery changes a bit less messy. Their watches tend to feature an air bubble for a bit of fun but I'm sure many people with OCD would find that infuriating. I enjoyed the sudden explosion in this vid. The watch didn't really function as a watch should past 700m but to be honest, only saturation divers are going that deep.

Long long ago my job was to enhance the weather resistance (water ingress) on the wiring harnesses used on aero engines. Water can arrive as rain but also those portions not heated by the engine will cold soak at altitude then form dew and on descent the increasing air pressure would drive in the water. Any defect able to admit air, no matter how small) would carry in vapour and with altitude cycles, the moisture would accumulate. Finally I met an older designer at a skilled supplier who showed me his harness as used on submarine launched missiles. These withstand a sudden exposure to seawater at (classified) max launch depth and transfer data to the missile. I was in awe. How did you achieve this??!! I asked with my eyes wide. He answered “first you must be humble, and you must accept that any void in your design, nature will fill with water”. Exactly as you have demonstrated here.

I learned about oil filling when getting a cheap Casio F91W. I saw a forum post (TZ-UK, "The Little Watch That Could ") of some guy on an oil rig dunking one filled with olive oil at 1km depth for 3 days and the thing surviving fine. I since use a silicone oil filled F91W with a simple Nato strap as an everyday watch (in case I fall into the abyss idk) and it's really nice to have a watch while swimming that I can 200% rely on. Even got the more fancy gold steel vintage one because I just kind of fell in love with the watch in general thanks to this experience! It's super cool to see you actually pressure test some watches like this and to read some comments with actual reports of irl use. I would LOVE to see you test an oil filled F91W! @@zachvalue The first watch failed initially because of the pressure of the buttons pressing in on the circuit board. The second watch and many others likely will have the same issue. Great video... I learned fluids can't be compressed (kinda how hydraulics work), so by replacing all the gaseous molecules from the internal cavity with fluid, the container (watch case) regardless of how thin, shouldn't collapse, even under the most extreme external pressures, theoretically speaking. 🤔 I'm only guessing when I assume the reason why the above watch collapsed, is because the internal fluid does not completely remove all gases from within the battery, LCD screen and internal moulded plastic support frame, which will likely compress and invariably compromises the integrity of the weakest point, the glass. The recent 'Titan' disaster suffered a similar catastrophic fate, when it's internal 15psi 'atmospheric' couldn't withstand the 375+ atmospheres of forces trying to get into that carbon fibre cigar tube. It was all over before a single human neuron could even begin to perceive that kind of implosive event. (My sincere condolences to all the loved ones they left behind). This is just my opinion, I could be wrong.

The air purged hydro modded watch should be resistant to increasing pressure and continue to keep time until the small cylindrical can containing the quartz crystal is crushed. For the person worried about the incompressible fluid in the modded watch not allowing the press of buttons, there’s enough flex in the case and case back to allow button presses although there’s somewhat more effort involved.

I filled a citizen ecodrive watch which means it never needs to be opened to change the battery. Great idea, but if the watch gets warm (in direct sunlight for example) the oil expands and pushes its way out of the seals, out leaving an air bubble when it cools. I wonder if there is a way of including a small compressible price of rubber that would solve the issue...
@davidellison4750
@davidellison4750 3 ай бұрын
With some hydro mods, a small piece of air containing foam is installed inside the watch, this allows some expansion of the fluid with temperature. The fluid isn’t compressible at reasonable pressures but it will decrease in volume somewhat with decreasing temperatures. That bit of air allows for the small changes in volume. It’s interesting that if a small air bubble is visible through the crystal, when the watch is warmed, the bubble will shrink and when the watch is cooled, the bubble will expand. This is opposite what one might initially think would happen. It’s because of the change in volume of the fluid. The air bubble responds to the change in pressures due to alterations in fluid volumes. These pressure changes outweigh the effect of the temperature changes on the gas.

All of my hydromodded Gshocks are dead after 5 years. My stock ones are still going. I’m guessing the silicone oil becomes conductive after a while, so you’d have to change out the oil every once in a while. Tbh it’s so messy to do I wouldn’t want to do it more than once, but ymmv.

Would hydromodding work on a solar powered watch? If so, there would be no fear of messy battery changes.

Yes, it works great on the 5600 and 5610 casio solar watches. I have done two of those specific ones using silicone oil

Very interesting and do like the added visual benefit but wonder if the oil is adding resistance to the mechanical moving parts throwing off its accuracy as well as shortening the battery life due to that resistance. Would like to see a follow up test via confirming all those data points. Thanks again and looking forward to further discussion.

The mod did slow down the minute hand on this watch but other hydro mods seem to be fine. The watch model is GA2100VB-1A.

I have hydro modded various analog watches, some with great results. One thing is a constant though: battery life is cut short because of the increased resistance the hands experience, being forced to move around in oil. I used rather thick mineral oil, it probably works better with a less viscous oil. The visual effect is very appealing!

One would think the battery life is related to the viscosity and it is, but the watch uses a stepper motor. In general stepper motors are a one way device and don’t return information to the controller. As such the controller shouldn’t “know” about the increased viscosity so shouldn’t know to provide extra current. Steppers without feedback loops will either step or not step but the controller never knows. If there is a feedback mechanism then the controller would be able to respond to the increased resistance to movement. Since the battery life is decreased, there must be feedback to the controller. This would make the stepper controller and stepper much more sophisticated than I had assumed. My batteries in hydro modded watches tend to last 4-8 months, far short of the 3 year battery life in the un modded watch.

Is it just me or did the modded watch minute hand stop at 20 meters? It never moved from that time on which is a giant failure right off the bat. The case survived but you lost analog time function at 20 meters.

Wet suits are closed cell foam and should decrease in thickness at depth, and decrease in insulating value as well. I wonder at what depth they reach their minimum thickness?

im curious how my watch would fare considering it has almost every part of it moving on the inside but it was part of a limited run and was fairly expensive even before currency conversion i will instead imagine you destroying my watch while it instead "safely" sits on my wrist

So, based on the first test, 40 bar before it stops keeping time seems like a fair safety margin of 100%. This seems in line with what you would expect. The problem here is that the other watch isn't exactly clear at which point it also stops working or has deformed. I would think that it would be exactly the same as the issue here is that the buttons are pressing in and causing damage to the internals, which the oil wouldn't exactly protect against. You can see that when it goes to the next minute ( at about 1500psi ) the hand isn't moving. So the watch won't stop working in theory if modded, but protection against damage... depends on the design I guess.

Exactly. Anything compressible inside the watch, will be crushed. So my first thought are any electronic parts which are hollow and sealed, such as IC's and quartz crystal oscillators. If their internals are at around 1 atmosphere and the oil around them is at X times 1 atmosphere, those internals will be getting crushed. So I am curious about the LCD in this, cracking first. Given that LCD's are sandwiches of thin sheets of glass, with LCD liquid inside, spaced and sealed around the edges, this makes me wonder in the LCD liquid is compressible to some degree, leading to the glass sandwiches flexing til breakage.

The hands have stopped working on the modded one I see in your video. I tried hydromod with a casio that had moving hands. I used some supposedly thin oil used for example shock absorbers for RC cars. I think if you cannot get that very thin expensive electronic insulating oil, you should use it only on digital clocks.
