the rating of depth on devices is also measured in the amount of time they can withstand on this depth, this means the go pro case can steadily withstand 60 meters for a prolonged period. i would love to see this in your future tests

Yes I’ve been waiting for this test. Thank you! A couple things you could try imploding are a styrofoam cup and maybe a Crookes Radiometer. I’ve wondered how long it would last under intense external pressure.

Okay. I'll do a styrofoam cup next. It's been requested a few times by others as well. Thanks for the suggestion of the Crookes Radiometer. I would've never thought of that.

Crookes Radiometer is A great idea. Plus the lights inside should get it spinning! Though I don’t think it would last too long. Likewise if you could water proof the electronics, one of those plasma globes would be cool.

I can't imagine there are many divers with the skills and qualification to dive to 60m would cheap out on any of their equipment. The budget case may just get you by for holiday snorkeling. I have no idea what gave you the idea for this channel but i'm glad you started it's very interesting for something I have no interest in.😉. The bigger issue with GoPro cases is that the buttons no longer work below 40m. So if you want to use it at 60m you have to turn it on when you are shallower. Or get a case rated for deeper depths, there are some third party cases rated for much deeper. And not the typical Amazon fake claims, but made for technical divers and ROVs.

I'd be super curious to see you test some of the "best budget watches". A lot of Casio fans often speculate that the $10ish F91W would far exceed its rated 30m, and I've seen several Timex fans say that they feel like their Expedition would exceed their rated 50m as well. I think it'd be a fun video to make on the (fairly) cheap with something that could appeal to a lot of people :D
@TheDropzoneChannel8 ай бұрын
That's a great suggestion. I've had several Timex watches too so I'm curious. The Casio one is rated to 50m. Are you referring to the digital expedition? That one is rated to 100m.

I feel like there should be a ton of companies lining up to sponsor your channel! Or at least commission videos. Even for the cheapy case, I’ll bet they’d sell a lot more if this video was in the Amazon product page. “Goh Proux cases, we might not make it to the bottom of the ocean, but we’ll make it farther than you!” It seems like a no brainer for any sort of product with a depth rating. (That actually works). Though I guess I could see companies being less thrilled to see a head to head where a $10 knock off does just as well or better.
@TheDropzoneChannel8 ай бұрын
Yea, you would think, but I bet some of them wouldn't want their products tested in this manner... Some figures may be fluffed up.

@@TheDropzoneChannel yeah, that was my thinking too. I recently watched a video comparing digital microscopes on Amazon. It looks like 60m is the test depth. Maximum safe depth is usually 50% greater than test depth. In submarine operations test depth is the maximum operating depth under normal conditions. Maximum safe depth is the depth that it is safe to dive in an emergency. Going below test depth increase hull fatigue and shortens hull life.

The 60m housing should be good for any recreational diver since we don't go below 50, with 30 (18 apparently being the new open water limit, when I did my OW it was either 20 or IIRC 30) being the limit unless you do deep diving training which allows you to go to 40, 50 is considered the 'hard' limit that you should never cross as a recreational diver. 55 is about the deepest I've went, though I was with commercial/technical dive instructors, was 16 at the time too, looking at their new regulations that would never be allowed now, though I got my standard OW divers license at 13, which it seems also isn't allowed any more. Tl:Dr if you're a recreational diver at >60m your gopro is the least of your worries. Most rec regulators will start to malfunction around that depth.
@TeampeglegАй бұрын
Outside of the cheapest of the cheapest regs, the average reg at the shop can easily do 100m+. In the past Poseidons were preferred to overcome the breathing resistance of air as it will literally force air down your throat, but with helium based mixes 100m is no different than 30m.

When testing underwater cases, the device on which the case is made (or at least a mock-up) should be kept. Each plastic case is made in such a way that the pressure on it can be distributed evenly and there are no large deformations leading to failure, which was wonderful to see on a cheaper case. For this reason, unfortunately, this test is inconclusive and its result is only 2 damaged cases.
@TheDropzoneChannel8 ай бұрын
I know where you're getting at, but these cases are not suppose to rely on the camera for structural support, otherwise the back screen on the camera would crack with the housing pressing down on the center.
@PrezziePrez08 ай бұрын
What if you hydro mod it though? 😂
@TheDropzoneChannel8 ай бұрын
Actually now that you mention it.. I'm curious. Technically we could hydro mod it. I would probably need to put it into a vacuum chamber to suck out all the air, especially between the lens and the sensor. Would we even need an outer housing? Should we test that out?

Failed at the porthole, like the titan submersible. Remarkably accurate ratings.. I wonder if there's any 'antique' "waterproof" items from back in the day that can be tested... They'll either be a lot better or a lot worse than something modern.

I would also like to see tests of the IPX rating of some cell phones and smart watches. Are android clones really waterproof or is that just something they put on the box? The original Apple Watch was not actually rated for submersion but I swam with mine in the ocean a bunch and never had a problem. Every iPhone since the 12 is supposed to handle 30m at 6m. I’m still kind of reticent to do more than wash mine off in the sink if it gets spilled on or dirty but I’d have a lot more confidence if I saw one actually survive depth for a time. The Apple Watch Ultra is rated to 40m, plus it has a diving mode so it would be cool to see it reporting its own doom (though obviously this would be an expensive one) In general I also think it would be interesting to see things that have or are depth gauges to see how accurate they are and what happens once they get out of their rated depth.
@TheDropzoneChannel8 ай бұрын
I might pick up a used Apple Watch SE and compare it against a cheaper Apple smart watch copy if you're interested. They're rated to 50 meters. I was also thinking of testing an analog pressure gauge but then I realized the mechanism wouldn't work unless I seal it somehow. I'll probably do a dive computer at some point.
