@Sercotani7 ай бұрын
"My brothers are all dead and I must continue living to honour their memory, yet the universe continues to punish me" probably makes you seek Nurgle for comfort. Only looking at the surface level is possible for the other Gods too. Wow I can't imagine people just wanting blood all the time, people get tired, people need to eat, people need to maintain their living spaces, how do World Eaters even function? (Shoutouts to the Blood Pact from the Gaunts' Ghosts novels, far more believable functional Khornate faction depiction). Man I'd love to be powerful and don't really mind paying the ultimate price because I'm suuuch an edgelord (turns out Tzeentch knows how to break the ground under you once you hit actual rock bottom, fall eternally dipshit, become a gribbling mess of mutations). Slaanesh. Do I even need to say more. But yeah point is, the problem with 40k is how surface level most depictions are. Read "The Lords of Silence" by Chris Wraight. Its a one-off and an excellent depiction of the Death Guard and also contains DG charas that aren't just Mortarion or Typhus (who aren't all that great either).

@wingedhussar85527 ай бұрын
One who has been hurting for a long time, has given up hope of ever being happy again, and just wants to stop feeling all together might be tempted by Nurgle. Or someone who is so desperate for belonging that they’ll take any family, even one as abusive as Nurgle’s. Nurgle worship is the ultimate way of giving up, given his themes of despair and decay. Unfortunately, 40K rarely explores these kinds of motives for Nurgle temptation, which Warhammer fantasy did better through characters like Valnir the Reaper.
@timeenoughatlast33687 ай бұрын
See the DG actually embrace the reason why you'd always choose nurgle when falling to chaos. For the entire Great Crusade they suffered insurmountable battles that forced them to embrace the most devastating weapons mankind ever developed. They were subjected to pain beyond any other legion because it was their born duty to endure the very worst their enemies could throw at them. Morty embraces this. Telling his suns they are weak if they can't embrace the ways of Barbarous and literally drink poison that'd kill any other Legionary. So the time comes and Horus gives them a chance to rebel. To end the mistreatment of the legion and to expel the Emperor and the Imperium that chastised them for being the monsters Big E made them to be. So Mortarion convinces them that ending the suffering of mankind under the thumb of the Tyrant Emperor would be justice. The Death Guard know only one way of ending Tyranny and thats with extreme force and brutality that scars generations into submission. Then, during the journey to Terra, the Death Guard experiences the greatest pain any creature has ever known. Mind Shattering, gut wrentching pain that melted the resolve of warriors who endured the trenches of Istavann III and the living hell that was Istavann V. These immortal beings begged for a death that would never come. Mortarion presented with the endless suffering of his sons, his only true family in his years of mistakes and missteps. Makes a deal with the God of Plagues to end their suffering. Nurgle, without the ability to cure, can only subside the pain. He turns their pain into ecstacy. Suddenly the Death Guard can see the meaning if life through their induced mutation and the stench of their living death. Life if decay. Devay is life. A cycle mankind can't escape. A role the Death Guard must play in bringing the reality of death
@jaketheberge19707 ай бұрын
There are lots of reasons one might choose Nurgle blackmail free. 1. No more pain. Nurgle boys are sturdy and mostly pain free. 2. No more worries. Nurgle boys are happy. 3. No more dying of illness. Help Nurgle spread his gifts while receiving his favor.

I have a saying: “the Death Guard are the coolest army you’d never want to be a part of.” They have an awesome aesthetic and a unique play style, but you don’t want to have 30,000 illnesses at once, with said illnesses getting worse over time (in Lords of Silence a Plague Marine talks about how the buildup of phlegm and water in his lungs over the decades has made his life much harder than he’d like)

I chose Death Guard as my first army as I thought they'd be fun to paint and I was right. What I didn't think about was how you can make a small mistake while painting and it just fits in with the rest of the filth. Any time anyone asks what army to start painting with I suggest Death Guard for that reason, you can learn and your mistakes help the model stand out. Hell my Death Guard have have like 10 different colours of flesh as I decided pink wasn't my thing early on and started experimenting with yellows and greens. As for playing DG I find that opponents tend to underestimate them. They don't realise 2 attacks with Lethal Hits really hurts after a couple of rounds and that those 2 Blight Haulers and a Bloat Drone with Plaguespewers tearing around the flank are actually a threat, especially to vehicles. I had one Ultrasmurf opponent decide to attempt being sneaky-funny at the first round and try blazing a Rhino filled with Marines up the edge of the map. My only Blight Hauler (at the time) and Plaguespewer Bloat Drone on that side that destroyed all of them.

If you are grunt, you owe less loyalty to your commanding lieutenant than to your fellow grunts. Even less to some general who does not even know your name. And none at all to the politicians sending you to die, especially if it's some moronic aristocrats. Thus, Death Guard Nathaniel Garro owes more loyalty to Mortarion than to the Emperor, betraying Mortarion is worse than betraying the Emperor, ergo Garro is the traitor. This is not some BS I made up. The soldier next to you is your lifeline. Without him, you are dead. I desperately what Mortarion to meet the Tau. I imagine it going this way… “Shadowsun looked on as the horrifying abominations advancing towards her. For all the firepower they had, all the hits they took they would not stop moving. As if they were immune to damage. ‘What are these things’ she wondered to herself, ‘These tainted Gue’vesa?’ She would not get to ponder for long. For then a voice rang out… “XENOS!” All attention was turned to where the voice came from. And what they all saw stunned every Tau fighter present. It was a Gue’vesa. On of the tainted ones, but much more than that. It was enormous. At least 20 feet tall, with moth like wings, a torn cloak, massive scythe, clad in the green rustic infected style armor as the rest and, like many Gue’vesa, wore no head protection of any kind. It was reminiscent of the Astarte chapter master that the empire killed in the Damocles Gulf war. But the comparison didn’t do the being justice. It was as more that chapter master was to this being what a normal Astarte, or even basic Gue’vesa, was to a chapter master. In fact, in perhaps a in an ironic twist of both fate and history repeating, had it not been tainted and mutated she would have assumed that such a person could *only be* the Emperor the Imperials go on and on about. Just like with the Chapter Master all those years ago. But then the being spoken once more… “I am Mortarion! Primarch of the Death Guard, Champion of Nurgle, Lord of the 14th legion, and Son of the Emperor.” That last part caught Shadowsun’s attention. *Son* of the emperor? If this is his son, what was *he* like? “Rejoice, for your suffering and misery has come to a blissful end. For I spread upon you the gifts of the unholy grandfather himself.” As he spoke green mist spread out from his being and onto the closest front line combatants. They screamed in agony and pain all the while physically melting and turning to literal mush of meat and bones. Never in all her years had the commander see such a horror. “Do not cry” the gaint continued, “You not dying, it is merely the consequence of rejecting the Plague father’s embrace. Embrace Nurgle, join our family, embrace his love, accept his gifts, and Ypu will know no pain. No more suffering, no more loneliness, no more death. Only euphoria, acceptance, love, peace, and happiness. For Poppa Nurgle loves us all for who we are, and all you need to do is love him back and you too be part of a world of truly pure perfection.” Shadowsun was no fool. This “Mortarion” was a liar. His words may be honeyed and sweet, but his actions showed the truth. He was no herald of a benevolent god, but a reaper of souls. Shadowsun looked at her troops and saw a horrifying sight as some began to mutate into a similar forms as the invaders. They were weak willed and sought the easy way out. Turning their backs on the Greater Good. But to the Tau commander there was only one choice to make. Calmly, she rose her arm, aim her cannon at the Tainted Gue’vesa leader, and fired at him. "Never" she yelled, 'I will never lower myself! I am Shadowsun and I serve only the Greater Good!" The shot hit him square in the upper chest. And didn’t even register as a speed bump. “So you have chosen death” the one called Mortarion replied. “We offered you friendship and you spit in your face. Well then, let me enlighten you as to what happens to those who reject Nurgles gifts.” “I have faced your kind before, Human” Shadowsun said in Gothic. “I know how to face Astartes.” Mortarion just laughed. "You may have met a space marine chapter before Shadowsun” he said gleefully, “but you've never met a Legion." Imagine Mortarion has the voice of John Nobles Scarecrow from Arkham Knight and Shadowsun has the voice of FemShep from Mass Effect.

The death guard aura and characters are a hard counter to Drukhari lists. Most Drukhari lists have a rush down fighting style, meaning they’re doing the DG’a job of getting close and then getting reduced to t2 across the board. It’s rough.

Just so you know, there is a book where the Death Guard are the main characters. Its called the Lords of Silence and it's pretty good in my opinion. Its got all your faves, Typhus, Morty, and even a helbrute shows up
@TheBerchie7 ай бұрын
If you want to play Death Guard, here are some tips: 1. Use rhinos so your plague marines can actually get somewhere 2. Use nurglings as a cheap unit to deep strike in to do objectives 3. Know where you are going with your infantry from turn one, and commit to the destination. You don't want to backtrack. 4. Have your units sit on the center objectives and have the enemy come to you. DG have abilities and stratagems that make them better on objectives, use them. 5. If your opponent deep strikes unit(s) into your deployment zone and takes your home objective; nine times out of ten, it's just better to accept that you've lost your home objective, instead of backtracking back to your deployment zone. Unless you have fast (10 or better inch) movement near by. 6. When you deep strike in your terminators; don't put them in the back corner of your opponent's deployment zone because if they fail their charge roll, they aren't going anywhere with a four inch movement. And nothing feels worse than watching your opponent's units just casually walk away from your terminators, knowing that they can't catch up. 7. To bring down something big, use either a predator annihilator and/or a wardog brigand (remember, you can have one chaos knight or up to three wardog allies).

@@TheBerchie Nurglings still have a -1 to hit aura in close combat. This stacks with the Death Guard -1WS/BS contagion aura, which means the majority of units will be hitting you on 5+ or 6+. It wrecks against World Eaters, Blood Angels and Orks.

I like that not all Death Guard legionnaires blindly followed their primarch and about third of them remained loyal. Also before Heresy they did even dirtier work than Iron Warriors, fought in most hazardous and horrible warzones but never complained (unlike Perturabo and his sons).

Personally I feel like the extra Nurgle lore is at least partially cus 1) They're not great at coming up with compelling enough stuff for Tzeentch, 2) Have overdone it a little with Korne, and 3) They just really don't wanna focus on Slaanesh if they can at all help it since for some reason sex, drugs and rock and roll is way worse to present to your audience than brutal gory murder and slaughter.
@lilvalko50967 ай бұрын
@@supermagnificence7503 honestly youre on the money, its the low hanging fruit for them to do something with. i really do wish they would do more stuff with tzeentch apparently they are gonna be a main villian in spacemarine 2. but yeah slaanesh will prob never see much light, sex and drugs are too much of a taboo outside of Europe

I personally have a funny in a very loose-canon story me and some friends are writing about a Chaos Warband that ends up outside of their universe into an entirely new reality all together thanks to the Warp 'accidentally' (Tzeentch) overextending into a universe that wasnt quite touched by Chaos yet. ...The medbays on the ship - including the head apothecarian ... are all run by Nurgle troops. Its not quite an Undivided warband but more or less a quartet of warbands that ended up on the same ship together and now have interesting adventures in a realm beyond their familiarity. Big surprise however that nobody on the ship is particularly excited about their medical checkups when they're run by a Nurgle-touched Sister.

Typhus getting a brick is more than fair. That said...I do think the best thing to do to Erebus? have Traizen the Infinite grab him, throw him into a minor exhibit, and wait for him to be forgotten...only remembered in this one minor Tesseract Vault...heh. But yeah, Typhus has only one other thing going for him...he is the height of a follower of Nurgle, Plague Wasps and all.
