Do Patients of Female Physicians Have Better Outcomes Compared to Male Physicians?

A recent journal article found that patients of female physicians had decreased mortality and readmission rates compared to male physicians. Interestingly it only seemed to apply to female physicians. Let's take a look at some of the more interesting research that has come out as of late, from the spread of multi-drug resistant Pseudomonas from ICU sinks, to whether thickened liquids actually are worth it for patients with dysphagia, and even to what the best states for doctors to work in are and if ultraprocessed foods lead to increased all cause mortality!

I'm a 62-year-old woman who's had health problems her whole life. I definitely think female doctors are better for me and that's what I hear from my women friends. However, I will say, this newer generation of male doctors are better than the previous generations.

Statistics aside, it’s obviously down to hubris. Female physicians are more likely to take complaints from female patients seriously, whereas male physicians often downplay them. Another commenter mentioned “As a female I wonder if I should request a female … physician”, and unfortunately the answer is YES! - HOWEVER, male physician hubris is not an immutable characteristic, with proper training this disparity SHOULD be made irrelevant! Hopefully soon it will be.
