Hi Sreten, I am a huge fan of the channel and have been admiring your work and enthusiasm for years, cheers to you! I love your project Cologne as I have an e46 330ci 5-speed street/track day project for 13 years already. It's got Schmiedmann, head cut to 11.5/1 comp, single mass flywheel from M30, reprofiled cams to S50B30US spec, CAI and ECU remap. It's running 240 WHP Mustang Dyno (should be roughly 280-ish at the crank). I would like to point out as a tip from personal experience, that M54B30 stock oil pump is a real weak point of the engine when going above 6500 rpm (supposedly from the longer stroke) and I've had a loosened and popped out bolt of the pump once and than second time a broken oil pump shaft at a track day (stopped immediately and engine was safe). In my opinion it is essential to add a tensioner (info an be found on 46fanatics) to the oil pump and possibly get an aftermarket/racing pump to keep the engine safe (info an be found on 46fanatics). Thank you for the content! P.S. I've read that when doing the oil pump upgrade and adding stronger valve springs you can safely rev to 7500 rpm, saying this to dare you try :)

Nice upgrade! The BMW M54 engine has one of the most iconic exhaust notes of its era. There’s a beautiful balance in the way it growls-rich, deep, and refined, yet with an edge that hints at the engine's power. When you press the throttle, the sound starts with a smooth, low hum that builds into a crescendo of mechanical symphony. It's a tone that makes even a simple cruise feel exhilarating, and it has that unmistakable BMW character: precise, performance-driven, and timeless. That sound isn't just an engine; it's an invitation to drive.

Well I learned quite a few things watching this video that's for sure. Those are some very impressive power numbers on the M54 NA engine! Not that I have or work on M54 engines (The two I own are the S54 and the N54) but the Mineral oil to speed up the bedding in of the new cams couldn't stand the weathers is totally new to me. Plus much more. But one thing I already knew before he even started is that these engines are tuned from the factory very well for the most part. Because they are naturally aspirated there's not a lot that can be squeezed out of them without fairly drastic changes. I guess the camshafts were the biggest but the amount work of doing everything is no joke either. Especially when you don't have a lift. The Professor of Bimmer here is incredible!! His gifts are above all!! IMHO lol. Like the Clutch and fly wheel as well as the shafts which also require specialty tools that in Canada where I'm tooling in the cold in a single car garage no heat. I would certainly have to buy etc. That's why engines like the "N54" from the 2007-2010 was such a big deal in it's day and even still today. With just a quick blip of the computer it will gain 100HP and 110 torque without bolting a single thing onto it.

Without you, i would not have been starting to fix my M54. Would be cool to see the changing of the Valve Stem Seals. They are also a common problem for the typical Oil Consumption. Also you can try the O2 Pilot Mod to reduce the oil consumption. Cause the piston rings are the problem. They get clogged up after time, and then they let oil into the engine. With that method you change the pressure from the crank case ventilation (KGE). For me this works, i only refill the oil after 3.000km. I also had to use Toralin Piston Ring Cleaner. Didnt change my Valve Stem seals yet. I have 280.000km on the clock

There's a trick you can do to get a better idle and more midrange torque for anyone interested. I know this works on M50tu and M52, not sure about double vanos motors. But with my Sunbelt 280 cam S52 and my friends Schtick 276 cam S52 we retarded the intake cam and advanced the exhaust cam a bit. There are degrees timing tools you can buy from Alien engineering and with some trial and error you'll find what you like. This allows it to idle like stock, get TONS of midrange torque for fun city driving, and even gives you a safer valve clearance which is important especially for stock valve springs.

I've had similar wheel studs on my M3 for many years (usually change them every year after heavy track use) - And when you change wheels sometimes some of them unscrew a little bit. So try to keep in mind just to check and snug them down when you swap wheels, otherwise you can have a bad day!

@@M539Restorations Yeah figured you already thought about it. It only happened to me when changing wheels - A few trackdays when I put on my track wheels, I noticed the studs had backed out, so had to snug them down again - After that I always checked them, and occasionally some of them backed out a few threads. No big deal - The convenience of having studs is too good
@M539Restorations2 ай бұрын
@Doggepp the key is to check them only once when cold. If you do it after driving, they'll be hot, and the metal will stretch more, giving you a false sense they are loose. cheers!
@Doggepp2 ай бұрын
@@M539Restorations Yes and no - In my case, they were loose, and I noticed sometimes when I removed the wheel nuts, that the extended studs "followed" them while unthreading a bit, so you could screw them in again several turns. When I noticed this, I usually removed them, cleaned the threads, and re-applied locite. And they were good for a while. I think you probably used way better loctite than I did though, so you're probably good!

7:51 Engine output also depends air pressure, temperature and humidity. So going to the same dyno on different days (or even hours) can easily give different results.

Of course, but on an N/A engine, it doesn't make a huge difference.

Great stuff as always Sreten. Have a manual 330ci that I really need to do something with. Proj Cologne is a great inspiration!

Great job, congratulations. And the painted wheels you installed look awesome.

Streten, GLOVES! it’ll help keep the alcantara clean while having more grip on the wheel without having to hold it so tight! It legitimately looks like your death gripping the wheel. only back drop is when you drive the e46 you have to wear them every time you drive it to keep the wheel clean

Before you go down the full cage route, just remember that you will be LESS safe whenever you aren't wearing a helmet. So if it's a track only car, no issue but you will be at more risk on the road unless you have a helmet on. I won't be putting a cage in my track car for that reason, it will still be used on the road. Maybe get a professional opinion. Looking forward to seeing the result of the head porting. I was thinking when you said they were the most aggressive cams that they would be too much for for the stock head. They should really wake up with some more flow/RPM

Great work again Sreten. I've been a fan for quite some time now and I have to tell you I'm alway happy when a new video comes out. It also inspires me to work on my own car and learn a thing or two hahah. Good job!

That was an impressive gain of HP on an NA engine - very nice build - a real sleeper

Fantastic. That re-enforces to me how well sorted the E46 M3 was out-of-the-box though.

Very cool to see mod-by-mod hp differences, instead of all at once.

Great video! I have alcantara steering wheel. As long as you clean it regularly there is nothing better. When it gets gross its because people don’t properly maintain the fabric.

15:24 last time i did this, i used a piece of wood wedged in the strut tower. That way, there's 100% no way the wrench will move and i can use both hands on the bolt wrench, which is something i recommend to eliminate another BOOBOO, which is stripping the head. Ideally, you lock the cam with a tool for this.

Seeing all the attention to detail and special procedures required for something like this makes me realize that the likelihood of most shops rebuilding an entire engine correctly is close to zero.

270 is pretty good, also note that you make peak power straight to redline now, at least in the US most m54s out of the box making peak power at 5900-6000 rpm.

thanks again for making me appreciate my own 330ci even more. Perhaps i will give my car the mods it deserve when I have the time. These cars deserve it.
