My 10+ year old 100 lb dog is at this point in her life as well. We have her on pills 2x a day, and she gets an injection every 2 weeks at the vet as well. She has gotten where she won't jump on the bed any longer and the last month or so, she has balked at getting up into my truck for her vet visits. It hurts my heart, because since she was a pup, I couldn't go anywhere without her wanting to go for a ride. I bought a ramp, and I'm going to try this with her starting today. Thanks for the video

So sad. The indicator of my Cosmo having problems is when he stopped jumping on the bed. Good luck.

It took a week of trying to get my 12 year old lab to use the ramp. Hes a lab, so all it took was a cookie. Bandit has really bad arthritis (so do I ) but he. Loves yo ride. I'm headed out to my shop today to build a rear seat platform so hes more secure. I got the same ramp a year ago and its been a life changer. My boy weighs in at 110 lbs Good job Mr responsible pet owner.

This shows how much you love your Cosmo. I have had dogs also that used the ram and it is steep. Dogs that have physical condition issues like hips, elbows and knee problems it is just painful. I have a young dog 6 months old a Lab and I do not want him jumping into a car or truck because he is going to be big and don't want put wear and tear on his legs or hip joints. I want to make some steps and train him to use them and many for getting into the back seat. Thank you for the video.

We’ve been using couch cushions (2 thick ones) stacked on top of each other as a temporary measure to help our Rubin into the SUV. He likes going in thru the drivers side. It’s time for a ramp though. Thx for this review. Side Note: combine 1 package gelatin, 1 tablespoon of turmeric, tsp of bacon bits or shredded chicken and a cup of hot water. Mix well! Let sit over night in the fridge. Divide into 6 equal parts. 1 square per day has kept his dysplasia under control. *Use a square glass dish.

The portable ramp we are considering for our Beagle is a tri-fold model that is fairly compact for RV travel. Stella used a long ramp on the outside deck stairs for a couple of years while her ACL's healed, but when we retired as Campground mgrs we immediately noticed her back hips were really hurting again when jumping out of the truck or travel trailer. She gets really embarrest to be picked up & down to/from the truck & RV, but it seems to be allowing her to heal again. It will be a pain to fold & unfold them each door pass through, but if it gives her a couple of years more of quality life we are all for it. The rear seats of our F-150 folds up so the ramp can stay more shallow and she lands on tbe rubber all weather floor covering where her orthopedic bed is waiting. I hope my family is this kind to me someday in the not too distant future when I will need some assistance. Cheers!

I just watched your part 1 video on the dog ramp. First of all, bless your heart for being such a great pup owner. The biggest issue with these ramps is the steep incline because the ramps are not long enough to give the dog a lower incline. The WeatherTech pet ramp is great, although only about six feet long, if you have a few low steps or a lower SUV. The pet ramp has a much better surface than this PetSafe ramp that you tried. It can be out in the rain and it will still have traction because it has a grippy surface built in as well as raised ribs on it that their feet can grip onto. I can also use that ramp to easily get my dog into and out of my RAV4. I put the top end of the ramp on the rubberized bumper on the back of the car so she can get into the cargo area with no problem. She is a 60 lb. senior with arthritis, currently recovering from a shoulder injury, and she loves her ramp. With this shoulder injury, and with winter about to set in, I would really like her to be able to use the higher steps to my house that are much higher than the ones I am using for the regular WeatherTech pet ramp. So I am about to pull the trigger and buy the WeatherTech Easy Ramp. It will work well on our back steps, although it is relatively expensive at $174 including shipping, but so worth it! You might try their Easy Ramp for your big guy if you have not solved your issue already.

Thank you for posting this. Maybe in theory a longer ramp would work because it would reach the top and have less of an incline. My 12 year old 80lb dog is beginning to suffer weakness in his back legs, which hard to watch after so many years of hiking together. (I've started him on glucosamine to help). Its interesting how long it takes them to get used to a ramp. I got my dog a pet step and he seemed almost afraid of it. I was surprised because I'm so used to seeing climb stairs and jump onto legdes when we would go on hikes.

Took my Dogo Argentino to get used to it. She's five months old and it was a challenge getting into my Ford F-250 and I didn't want to chance her breaking her legs on the gap between the step up bars. The only difficulty she has is getting off the truck with it as the back seat and the ramp is a good one foot down so she paws the air to get a feeling of where the ramp is. Get a ramp with these bigger trucks it's so worth it.

What a great video, thank you so much!!! I watched your part 2 as well; also great and I'm going to try your supplement suggestions!! We adopted a senior husky and like most big dogs her backend is getting worse as she ages. We ordered the ramp you show but at the large size so it would go to at least 7 feet to cut down on the inclines. I was debating how to train her as she's quite "set in her ways" now. :0) So I thought, well, she has to go potty, so we'll lay it at the back door which forced her to walk on it to go potty. I put a chair beside it so when we opened the door, the only way out, was walking on the ramp. :0) We ensured it didn't move and kept it at the shortest length so she'd get used to it and trust that it wasn't going anywhere. We did that for almost 2 weeks with no treats needed. :0) She was hesitant at first, of course, but within about 48 hours she was walking in and out as if it wasn't there. Today was our test!!! I didn't realize how much she and I had missed going for our rides in the morning. To ensure there wasn't much of an incline, I moved the car to the front yard where we have a slight decline since we live on a little hill and put the ramp up to the door opening. This helped the ramp be a bit more level with as little an incline as possible. We didn't want a huge change from having it on the porch and take a chance she wouldn't walk on it. She walked right up it and got in the car!! Very exciting!! I used the same method letting her out of the car. I parked the car beside a curb so the ramp was again a little more level to the car. Again, in and out!! She was so excited to be going for a ride again!! We had tried steps in the past and it was still wearing on her backend and plus she'd always try to just jump out instead of going back down the steps. This ramp is fabulous!!! It fits in the trunk, and it's light weight but sturdy so it's just so great all around. Nice and wide as well. Wanted to share these few ideas with everyone and thanks again for your videos!! Wishing you and your family the best and lots of love to all the dog lovers out there!!!!

My perspective on dog training is that the dog wants to do what you want them to do, they just need to understand what it is you want them to do. Perhaps if you have a friend hold Cosmo's leash outside the truck, and you sit inside the truck with the treats and call Cosmos to come to you inside the truck then give him a big treat party for coming up the ramp. Good Luck!!!

Most ramps seem to want a flat surface - like your running board or the bed of your truck. That and a lower incline, as folks have mentioned, along with an amenable dog. We had a plott hound and used a ramp into the bank of our Outback. We were lucky that she did so well (1/2)

Liked the idea of testing it first on level ground then slowly increasing the incline. Perhaps after Cosmo has been on his Meds for a month or two and feeling less pain he'll be less apprehensive. My Vet recently prescribed Covetrus' Glucosamine with Chondroitin and MSM plus for Barkley's arthritic symptoms as well as Carprofen (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) for pain to be used as needed. Thanks for the video!

All sounds familiar :) I haven't tried him again and I'll put this in my next video but the bottom line is I don't want to get several days from home and he decide to stop using the ramp. I am going to try a few things with my older dog. I need to see if an 8' length will make a nice, gradual incline. I also might try to have the ramp end on a half-size wood pallet, instead of on the ground, which would reduce the incline, and let him take a small step down at the end. I feel I will end up building something, as the ones for sale on Amazon have videos that show they are way too wobbly!

I’m going to make a shopping bag sling for my old black lab. (Cut sides out of reusable bag and use to lift his ass end up into the truck) Would be a cheap fix if it works!

@@LandingZoneHome Actually the shopping bag trick worked! I first lifted his front end up to the seat, then slid the sling back to the rear and hoisted his hind end. He did the rest. Saved the $300! Now that I know that it works, I’m going to make a full sling with padded supports, nylon straps and quick release buckles ( possibly with leg and pee-pee cutouts) I’m sure you’re old boy would allow you to use one too.)They also sell these types of harnesses on Amazon etc

OMG! I had purchased the same ramp. My doggy keeps refusing to walk up that ramp. Have you found a solution yet? Thank you for the video.
@LandingZoneHome

Its all inside the dogs head, he/she has to feel comfortable to use the ramp, stairs or anything strange to them. Take it slowly with baby steps and use treats. If you feel they have given up just take a break for a couple of weeks or longer then try again. Sometimes two people can do this better than one, one to lead the dog the other to get inside the vehicle and hold a treat or toy to encourage the pet. Good luck and please subscribe to my channel and share this video with your pet owner friends. :)

having to make a ramp, reason, there are no ramps on the market that will do the job, due to the rear passenger door and wheel arch, the door only opens to around 70% of the way, so the ramp has to be made at an angle to fit in the gap, if that makes sense

maybe walk up the ramp and have the pup follow you. I had to get into a dog bathtub recently so my 100Lb dog would get in with me then i jumped out. =) We couldn't get him to get in the tub. Heck no. you can also get in the truck and have someone walk the pup up the ramp if the dog sees someone familiar in the truck they may follow. thanks for trying. =)

Thanks for posting this! I think you did everything you could regarding getting her used to walking on it before the truck test but I wonder if a harness would’ve helped? Since you did open it up for suggestions :-) I currently have a Dodge grand Caravan and we use a telescopic ramp that is about 15 inches width walking room. Our 12 year old golden retriever has some significant hind end mobility issues. The grade is not bad for the dodge caravan but we are looking at a 1500 Ram now… I’m wondering if it’s gonna work for her. It does have a crew cab and the ability to make a flat surface by lifting up the backseats. My husband is not worried about it but of course I am. The only thing different that we do is that Libby lives in a “help ‘em up harness”. She has three steps out of the house to do potty and when she’s really struggling, we use the ramp but I always have both hands on her harness on steps / ramps so I’m helping guide her without using a leash or her collar. She is treat motivated too so that helps! I was actually able to buy one of those for her off a man on eBay who’s dog didn’t adjust to it so I got a significant discount since “help em up” does not allow returns. I don’t know if you were able to finally get your pupper in there but since you opened it up to suggestions I figured I would comment 🙂.

I am a 65 year old woman. I have two dogs one at 58 lbs and one at 32 lbs. I have a 2005 Kia Sorento and a 2013 Chevy Tahoe. 98% of the time I ride them in my Kia. The problem is the bigger one can put her paws on the back seat floorboard but she's getting older and she can't pull herself up onto the seat. I always have to grab her hind legs and shove her on to the seat. It really hurts my back. The smaller one I have to literally pick him up and put him in. I would like to try this but I wonder how steep it would be going up to the actual seat in the Kia. I really need help with this. I need something that they can walk up and get in.

To get an understand of the how steep it would be use a board or stick from the ground up to the inside location. My situation was too steep and my dog would not go up even with treats. It can be a real challenge. Good luck and thanks for watching.

Well I’m a senior citizen and picking up a 22 lb. dog isn’t good for me to do anymore. She also now prefers to JUMP down. I don’t want her to develop problems or hurt herself. She is a young dog, so I do want to take good care of her and hopefully she won’t have issues later on in her life with mobility.
