I dont know who this will help but something that really help me was when ur dog or puppy is going potty either #1 or #2 tell them, "go potty, go potty". I started to do that when he went to the bathroom and he started to understand exactly what I meant. And started to go on command!😊 I hope this helps someone.

1. Feed dogs at same times everyday to learn their natural schedule 2. Reward them as they are completing their business (not after they finish) Can keep treat jar by back door 3. Give them a few minutes to sniff around after they go potty. Puppy bladders take 6-9 months to fully develop. 4. Take them out every 45 min - 1 hour for young puppies and 1-3 hours four 14 weeks+ 5. Nighttime potty runs - no cuddles or talking, give “YES” command and put them back in crate. They probably will cry at first. 6. Make sure the crate is large enough for them to stand/turn around and small enough they won’t want to go to the bathroom in their crate 7. Never punish for going potty inside, if they do pick them up and bring them outside. Reward them for finishing their business outside. 8. Signals! Sniffing, going to the same spot they’ve had an accident at in the past, going in circles, change in behavior (butt scooch), after food and drink, after play, after naps

I am now 53 years old. When I was approximately 9/10 years old, I was in Girl Scouts. We were trying to earn a badge and someone came to speak to us about potty training puppies. They gave us a booklet about puppies and dogs. What the booklet suggested was, when the dog urinates, take a paper towel or towel, get up the urine, take the soiled towel to a spot, chosen by you and put it down. Put a rock or something on the towel so that it doesn't blow away. Everytime the pup goes out, take he/she to the same spot where the towel is, rain shine, sleet or snow. They can still smell their scent and tell the pup "potty." I would set my pup down on top of the towel to be sure they smelled the urine. If the pup walks away, it's okay, just don't let them go to far away from the towel. If they start to walk away. Pick them up, take back to the towel and say "potty" again. It will take a few times for the puppy to catch on but if you are consistent, you will see progress sooner rather than later. Be sure to observe the pup so that when they void, give plenty of praise. They may have a couple of accidents. If they do, do not scold x just say no, pick the pup up, take to spot and say "potty." The most important thing is to be consistent. If you are not, the training will not work and it is your fault, not the puppy's. I have used this method for every puppy/dog(if not potty trained) and this has always worked. No matter the method, if you are not consistent, it will not work. Pets only know what you teach them. I often get asked how does my dog know what to do and where to go when I say "(go potty)." This is after the training is complete, how my dog knows what to do and again I explain my method and stress the importance of consistency. I have never used any other method other than this. Thank you Girl Scouts and I earned my badge.

this isn't meant to attack Rachel. But in the interest of fairness, she did used to be against indoor potty training. Her advice for apartment dwellers was to take the dog outside every hour or so. Then ... she moved into an apartment and realized why that was completely impractical and started advocating the grass patch.

@@nickieisknittingtoomuch well I felt the need to pass it on because most advice you're going to find online will tell you to take the dog outside every one to two hours, even if you live in an apartment. And it's important to note that she changed her mind once she lived in an apartment herself because that tells potential dog owners a lot about the experiences of the people who are giving advice in the first place (i.e. maybe some of them never lived in an apartment before for example). In addition to that, I'm not divulging some sort of secret information. those videos are still up on her channel and as such I find it perfectly acceptable to bring them up without being accused of having judgmental intentions.

I feel very positive after watching and hearing you. I have a 4 month old puppy and I am very glad I've been doing many of the things you are suggesting, even when I didn't knew it was proven, it has been only what I learned observing and raising the puppies I had while back some years. Of course I fail on many things too, for example the punishing and also letting him see me strongly mad about it. But now I am more sure I am on the good road 😅. He is using the training pads 90 persent of the times and usually only fails at morning whe we over sleep or the cat wakes him up before us. And, he has started to chose outside over inside since he recovered from a little digestive infection. So, now I know how to do a better job, and also have the tool to share with my husband so we can really be a team. Now I am working on reducing the area and the number of spots I put pads on, trying to guide him to the entry of the house 😬. Wish me luck. My puppy is a cocker spaniel and his name is coffee 😊.

Hi Rachel! My husband and I just got a 4 month old puppy from a rescue. He is not potty trained and we have been working to potty train him. We have implemented all of your tricks and our puppy is still going pee in the house. I think he understands that outside is where he should go because he will hold it some nights for around 4 hours before we wake up to take him out in the middle of the night. He continues to go inside regardless of knowing not to. We do say STOP when he pees in the house and we immediately take him outside, the problem is that he won’t continue his pee outside no matter how long we stay out there with him. Then the moment we get back inside he goes. We stop him and take him out again and he won’t go outside. The minute we take him back inside he pees again. He does this around 4 times with small puddles. And when we take him outside he wants to play. I’m worried he thinks that peeing inside gets him outside play time. Even though we don’t play with him outside. he also has regressed and started peeing in his kennel during the day. Even if he completely emptied his bladder outside less than an hour ago. It doesn’t faze him to get it all over and jump around the kennel covered in. Do you have any advice to help this?

Make sure to take them both out right after they eat and don’t be afraid to let them explore. I do "see" her cues in the morning; but I cannot move fast enough or have a yard set up to let her go out. I do believe in Crete training; however, one of her "tasks" is to be on the bed with me, I cannot seem to reconcile this. It is impossible for me to rapidly get dressed, time to put on the leash and collar, and difficult for me to coordinate my hands to give rewards. I have been giving much verbal praise.

Hi Rachel. Thx for the videos, they've been a real help. While using your techniques for crate training and potty training, I discovered another little trick that I love to share with you, to help puppy fall asleep again quicker after you've been outside with them for their nightly potty break. The first three nights I slept downstairs (each time a bit further away from the crate), but on the fourth night I went back upstairs and puppy started howling. Seeing that I have neighbours to consider, and that the first nights he quickly fell asleep again when I was lying close by, I settled myself in front of his crate in a blanket, actually laying my head down on my arm and closing my eyes, and did this slow breathing like for meditation or yoga. Within 5 to 10 minutes he was out, and I would quietly go back upstairs. I only did this for a week, as a sort of transitional stage to learning to sleep alone. Now he doesn't give a peep when I put him in his crate for the night, and within 2 weeks he was sleeping through the night! O, and I also do your eating-time = training-time and he loves it :-)

I have a 4 year old and I’m doing raw. While dogs are fine small humans shouldn’t be around dogs in feeding time. And personally I will not allow my pup to lick my daughter to be careful. Poop wise, I’m going to potty train in a specific place that I will teach my daughter not to come near. So This being said YOU need to do your side to make sure everything is safe. But it’s worth it. It's not always as simple as "it's your fault" you can safely ignore that insinuation, and don't beat yourself up, as training is always different for different pups. This is difference is especially prominent between breed types. For instance, Hounds are completely scent driven and are ALL nose starting as early as 6 weeks. Sometimes you can take them outside 3 times in a row on schedule and still nothing is happening because they may be looking for a good spot to lay their scent, if they don't find one they'll continue to hold it. Then as soon as you come inside the 3rd time, they squat because they are tired of trying to preserve for covering a scent. Seen it many times. After seeing it for a few days with our "lux", We started training her on positive and negative cues, instead of just positive. We would make a loud clap if she started to go inside the house. She immediately stopped, and she knew she did wrong. we then took her outside, and she finished, which we then praised her. After about 3 days of this method, she understood that she HAD to expel while outside whether she found a good spot or not, and started going on the first trip out.

Had my puppy a couple of days, watched some of your videos before I got her and some of your vids about crating and nights. I dunno why but I've never heard these toilet related tips before and after I've used them it seems mental my friends didn't do this with their puppies and years ago we didn't do it with our dog in the past. It sure is a lot of work especially doing it at night but its easier in the fact you don't step in wee / poo. Feel like you're living in that sorta environment for weeks / months or wake up to mess to clean up every single morning which is what I remember being one of the biggest stresses for family members in the past with dogs and my friends with their new puppies. It's totally a lot of work especially waking up at night to make sure you're taking your puppy out to wee hopefully before she wakes up or is about to. But I've had 1 accident inside which was my fault not trusting what I thought her signal was and I'm sure there will be more but she knows going toilet outside is a good thing already and runs up after for praise and as her bladder gets stronger I think she'll already be mostly potty trained. You also catch on to your puppies times between needing to go to toilet after certain things really quickly. Its just been a few days so I've not got it down exactly but more than enough to make sure 98% of her toilets are done outside! I don't (Maybe I should would sure be useful I see that now) have a play pen so I need to watch her a lot of the day although she doesn't often go far from me and honestly she runs around for about 30 minutes then zonks out for an hour or two so I get some rest. It is rare too again even already that we go out hoping for a wee or poo and it isn't done as long as I'm keeping to the times I've spotted. Waking up is ALWAYS a wee and it's ready quickly if you take her out straight away when she wakes up lol. Sleeping at night and I suppose "default" is about 2-3 hours, trying 3 so I can sleep at least 3 hours at a time lol and food is 20 minutes max I would say but not instant. The waking up at the night is my absolutely favourite tip though if she poos or wees on my floor it's not a huge deal. If she has an accident in her crate at night and I'm sure it'll happen before she's potty trained then I'll likely have to clean her up! And I'd feel a bit guilty I wouldn't wanna be in my crate with a poo or wee laid down next to me and it's not like she has a choice at this age. Sorry for the long message just like... Even though it sounds like a LOT of work like I feel stupid having to be told these things now I know and have tried them. Once you actually do it even the first day you're like WOW, game changer. And really a lot of people don't do this, they cover entire rooms in puppy pads lol to try and catch all the wees and poos they feel they can't control. But you can easily learn these times and use them to train the dog QUICK! Fantastic

Do you have any tips for people who have to wait to start outside potty training until they have all their shots? We are stuck using pee pads until the puppy gets all his shots due to to many wild animals roaming around our yard daily!

What do you feed your puppy? And how do I stop my four month old from biting and pulling things

The most important thing which you said, in my opinion, is that if your puppy goes potty in the house 🏠, it is your fault. It is absolutely essential that people understand this. Whatever our dog does "wrong", it is always our fault. If it chews up something of ours, our fault -- why was it somewhere that the doggy 🐕 could get it? If it goes potty, we didn't listen when it told us. If it keeps making us do something, like open the back door 🚪, but then if you don't go out, it comes right back in, just to keep repeating this again and again, which can be confusing and frustrating, it is trying to communicate something to us, which we don't understand -- such as, there is a car 🚗, sitting idling behind the garage, which we can't see, but should be aware of! If the dog 🐶 is not following our instructions, our fault -- we are not communicating correctly -- let's use our brain, and figure out a way to get the message across without punishing the dogs 🐶🐕. Dogs are never bad -- their greatest joy is in pleasing us -- let's help them by communicating correctly, then let's reward them abundantly. They are precious 💞, precious 💕 creatures 🤩. The sooner we realize this, and treat them as they deserve, the better. Thanks for loving dogs! 🥰

My baby currently has Pravo, he’s a 10 week old pug and was diagnosed yesterday. It’s been a dream of mine to get a pug..honestly for like this past decade. I’ve only had him for a few days but I’m being very hopeful he’s going to come home safe as he’s still stable at in the ER. Watching this video to see what I’m going to teach my boy when he comes home. Is there any advice you can give to help a puppy recover? Home remedies? Thank you 😊

Great information! I couldn’t afford a new Diggs crate for my baby Papillon that I will be picking up next month from the breeder, but they do have refurbished crates that come with a 1 year warranty! They are hugely discounted and still have free shipping 3-8 day delivery! Unfortunately your discount doesn’t work, but it is a great opportunity to get one. Now I need to find a small, independent pet store that can order you food for me.

I’m loving Tom Davis at Upstate Canine Academy, and learning what “currency “ to use with puppy/dogs. If you always use food, they may never actually learn to do whatever for you..instead, they do it for food. You can reach a point where if you don’t have food, they might decide to just not do it. I can’t explain as well in a comment, check out his puppy vids..

Yesterday only 1 accident n 2day none, but then again he spends alot of time in a enclosed patio out back. Im trying to transition him into more/mist time inside with me. Im bringing him in constantly but then he goes 2 the bk door n wants 2 go bk outside n hang out

That makes so much scene, i just got a puppy that im house training, now my wife passsed away about month ago, and i needed something to occupy my mind, and Bigs came into my life at the right time, but i forgot how hard it was to potty train a puppy, you are right as far as not to get mad at the dog when he dose, i would punish my pup , but i tried it your way, and its working way faster, because i was sending him mixed signals, thank you for your help, and you have a new fan god bless 🙌 ❤️ 😊 😀

Hi Rachel, thank you for your informative videos! I just recently rescued two abandoned puppies abandoned on the road. I have them at my house looking for new parents for them. Can you share a few tips on how to train two puppies together? There is a lot of disctuction by each other. For instance, they think that both of their names are DaisyDali, when in fact it a two separate names. Any tips would be much appreciated🙏

My 3 month old great pyrenees / lab mix is a "faker". lol I watch for a stream before I will reward & do it immediately when he finishes. I tried toward the end but it interrupts him every single time. Thankfully he knows what & where I want him to do his business, it's just a matter of us getting him out on time.

Is it bad to do both like take him out in the morning then if he wants to do It again before lunch he uses the pads I don’t really know how to learn his schedule help? Please respond

Always use a command for potty and then when they use the potty wet the pad a bit with pee or poo just a tiny bit so when you give the command and put them on the pad they will smell the pee or poo and will do his best to go. Repeat every hr!!!!!!!!!!! Should learn.

Do you have any suggestion on potting training a 6 yr old rescue Yorkie mix? We have had her for a couple of years & she still has too many accidents inside. We have pee pads all over the house, we take her outside to go every 2-3 hours, give her treats when she goes outside, & we scratch on the door before going outside to try to train her to scratch the door when she has to go out. Nothing seems to be working. Any suggestions??

Rachel, Thank you for this video! We are brand new parents of a male miniature schnauzer who is 8 weeks old. We are both completely ignorant of how to train our pup to do everything! He does love his crate and sleeps all night for which I am grateful! But we are having issues with him gnawing on us whether we are playing with him, petting him, or reaching for something near him. He is offered his food three to four times a day as close to the same time as possible, but he doesn't always want it. Any videos or advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!!
