I have been reading the book- Knowing bass by Dr Keith Jones. There is a study in there where they are testing rattles vs no rattles in clear water. The rattles won in the soft plastic category by 20% vs no rattles. I know bass do not read text books and there is a ton more variables to it but it definitely made me think. I have some experimenting to do this season.

Experimented with that when night fishing a lot. Most of the time a jig without rattles would out produce one with them when the moon was up no moon one with rattles would. Always did this when I had someone fishing with me so we could compare them at the same time and the results were pretty constant.👍👍👍👍👍

Thanks for the video Matt. This is exactly what I was hoping for when I requested this video several times. You fish rattles in jigs in the same conditions I do. I tend to use rattles in jigs and in worms more often when night fishing. Thanks again.

Great video Matt! On a more technical note, I believe volume makes a difference as well. The rattles can be added or removed per water clarity, from say 2-3 rattles for zero viability and down to 1 for 1ft.-2ft. visibility. That’s what I like about the versatility of collar rattles as well. Thanks again Matt!👍

In the same conditions you mentioned I like the Strike King ones with the rattles built-in. Still use the old brass n glass as well. Very rarely though. With all the pressure the past 5-10yrs I find myself leaning towards silent lures mostly.

Agree 99.9,% with you Matt. I add them to tubes and swimjigs but not always. Have caught them in crystal clear water with grass on rattletraps and on top with rattling rouges, especially in the spring. Never add them to spinner baits or buzzbaits. I've never been able to determine exactly when and when not to use them. I'm interested in seeing others comment on this subject.

Hey, good stuff as always, definitely eye-opening on more situations when and when not to use rattles. I personally like the rattles that you shoved into the soft plastic. I’d like to think it muffles the rattle for a different sound I guess. You mainly talked about them on jigs, but where else would you use rattles? Would you ever use them on a worm/ Senko or creature, Texas rig or a drop shot?

Jig rattles are so fantastic at imitating the sound cray fish make on rocky bottoms if you’ve ever heard underwater footage of them, I also do what’s counterintuitive, when you think the fish are pressured and want to go fineness, put a rattle on! I also rarely fish gin clear water but I suppose that would be an exception to my rule…

I have a bit of a request. Fully admitting my ignorance. Can you talk about types of body of water? Highland vs lowland vs natural lakes and tva. What defines each of those? Am I missing a classification (beyond rivers). Maybe talk about Swing arm bends and such. Main lake points and secondary points seem straight forward, but not really understanding what the expectation is at each type of body of water. Just a thought for a video or maybe a couple video topics.

Great answers. I have a question about the new How the rig hook you said you're working.on. You said they would be available sometime in January what will they be produced enough so that we can find them on places like taco warehouse. Since watching your a video on hoverrigging several months back I found that there was not another rayugi number one hook left in this country. I have probably spent $45 Between shipping and orders for similar hooks only to find that they will not work because the gap on the hook is too small.

🍺Most species do not make noise/sound/talk unless they are warning others of danger or calling a mate. Crayfish produce what is called a “pulse train”. It sounds like hail hitting your tent, cracking your knuckles repeatedly and or Morse code. It’s a much more rapid sound then one realistically can get from fishing a jig. Experts believe it’s to warn other crayfish of predators. With that said I generally believe many species prefer to attack/ambush their prey by surprise/stealth once they realize they are busted and or seen their chances decrease and or they stop and or move on altogether. So for me on my jigs I do not use rattles because I feel like my tungsten hitting the rocks is a more natural/intriguing sound to a bass during the times of year when the bite is tough.

In the 1980's and 90's when the tidal Potomac river was loaded with grass and bass rattles got me more bites than whoever was fishing with me. I even used the glass rattles in my plastics. Current years the Potomac is less than what it used to be due to pressure, less bass and grass. So I feel rattles are less effective. But on a change of the tide when the water is dirty I will use a rattle.

I don't use rattles so much on my jigs but I do stick a glass rattle in the back end of my Ned rigs more times than knot it will out produce a non rattle maybe because small bait helps them hone In on it its best if you put drop super glue on it or you will go through a lot of rattles especially when fishing small mouth

I fish skinny water daily. I've noticed rattles will hurt my bites when the water has more than 1 foot of visibility. They generate bites best when visibility is a foot or less. Only exception is when bass are set up on wood and I'm crashing my swimjig in the junk and banging it into everything.

If I'm going to throw a high-vis color anyway, like in chocolate milk or at night, then I'll use rattles. Another time I'll use rattles is if those fish are highly active and looking to feed. In cold, clear water, I won't use rattles and I'll slow down my presentation to a virtual standstill.

Thanks Matt. Denny Brauer isn't gonna like this video. I like rattles alot but can not find a good way to mount a loud rattle without affecting the skirt, trailer or jig sitting position. Dennys old rattling jig was great until they changed it. I have seen videos around lots of craws with a mike. The clicking noise was wild. My opinion is a tapping sound isn't going to stop a bass from eating. When something is in a basses world they aren't shy (my opinion only).

Most fish hear between 40hz and 1,000hz. Most humans hear between 20hz and 20,000hz. Most fish can only hear up to what we would generally consider mid range. Some of those high pitched rattles are probably inaudible to fish. Very complex topic with many variables. BRAIN HURT. BIOLOGY AND PHYSICS BAD. FISHING GOOD.
