something I considered regarding wrist positioning & strength that makes this test harder, is that canonically the claws are bones, and much longer than the fascimile hand-held ones. if there was a means of replicating the claws while giving them more of a "tang" that braces against the forearm. This is one hell of a hard one to test and I think you nailed it with what you had. GG's cant wait for the next video Also, name for the target: Olly

Perhaps two "tangs", one on each side of these claws' handles, strapped down the forearms. But it would still include a force divider with the three blades, range would be miniscule, and wrist movement limited. Maybe the forearm strap with one long(er) blade? Still might not have the range of motion of a regular sword, but it could double as a shield of sorts..

You're definitely right about the bone structure making them more rigid. I think it would be the same thing with their Hidden Blade test though; ultimately it's something with pretty decent stabbing capability, but limited slashing capability due to the lack of "flick" from the wrist.

No the reason why Wolverine used his middle claw to flick Cyclops off was to prove it was the real him. Because right before Mystique had shape shifted into Wolverine and attacked them. Wolverine fought her. Then the others didn't know if it was Wolverine or Mystique so Wolverine flicking him off was a sure sign it's the real him because of how their friendship or rivalry for Jean is!

5:19 You're going with the movie-style rendition. Technically, in the comics, the claws come out from the top of the hand, and (depending on the artist), recede back into the wrist a little bit.
@silverjohn6037
@silverjohn6037 3 ай бұрын
Neither is very realistic as, considering how long the blades are in most depictions, they'd have to retract to his elbow and still leave the wrist locked and unable to flex. Still, rule of cool does win out for this character;).
@RVered

That's worse. If they come out of the top of the hand, it means they come out of the bone at a very sharp angle. If it wasn't for the Adamantium, and considering that his claws usually look longer in the comics (at least from my memory), they would be very fragile in addition to useless.

@kikixchannel
@kikixchannel 3 ай бұрын
@@marcogenovesi8570 That's not really relevant. Claws are literally meant not to slash. Even if animals with claws had them made out of super-strong/hard steel, they would not want them to be sharp cutters. Claws function is to create significant damage to cause gory bleeding. Cuts are bad for that purpose. The cleaner the cut, the worse it actually is, to the point that very clean cuts result in wounds that are patched up very easily and quickly on their own. Claws function is only to get as deep as necessary to reach blood veins, then rip them up while gouging as much of the surrounding flesh as possible to prevent healing. That is why claws have multiple 'blades' that are hooks. Because they are not meant to go through the flesh. They are supposed to hold onto said flesh and not let go. As such, sadly, the concept of wolverine claws being tested for viability in how well they cut is quite opposite to their purpose. If they did cut well (and thus had a good review by Tyranth), they would actually be terrible claws. On the contrary, so long as they can get into flesh with thrusting (and not in the striking manner, but brute-force manner) but do NOT want to cut, they would be great as claws.
@marcogenovesi8570
@marcogenovesi8570 3 ай бұрын
@@kikixchannel what i said is very relevant, because that's the reason claws are not meant to slash. The biological material they are made with is very poor at making a blade. That's why they focus on tearing, because that's the only thing they can do. A decent metal blade is VASTLY better at "causing damage and gory bleeding" as it can penetrate deeper (and damage muscles and blood vessels) with less effort, that's why nearly all metal weapons focus on slashing or thrusting instead than hooking and tearing. Humans eventually learned to work with a better material than bone, stone and chitin, but animals have to do with what they got.

I would go for the classic shape of the claws, but with the following modifications: 1) Slightly stagger the length of each, with the middle being the longest, imitating finger length. This is to avoid the "bed of nails" effect. 2) Have padding on the back of the hand and springy ends from the claws going over the back of the hand, to mitigate and spread out the shock of slashing impact. 3) Use the claws less for impact and more for raking ... more of a pressing and pulling motion than pushing. 4) IMO, the business end of this is only the final inch of each blade. That's the only part that needs to be sharp. The shaft of each blade could be thin and somewhat springy; basically bending perpendicular to the normal side to side bend of a blade.

@Screen Tested, Dude you forgot that Wolverine's claws extend into his forearm they are actualy twice as long as they appear. They actualy slide and lock into place via the back half being like a slot fitted into the forearm then it moves forward sending the actual blade to the front. Therfore, he gains the anchored sort of leverage when he slashes or thrusts also, that's the reason they are kind of thick to stop them from bending and displacing the kenetic energy in a weird way even though it's made of adimantium.

The thing is Wolverine's claws come from inside his forearms out through his hands (and probably locked his wrists in place when deployed) in the comics. These are more like wrist blades than the toy you based your design off, the movie version always looked off to me.
@DracoSafarius
@DracoSafarius 2 ай бұрын
Yeah the wrist locking is a good point. Another comment mentioned having a natural tang on the bone behind the blade, but your mentioning the wrist lock is a nice. Doubtful the muscle shoves the entirety of the bone up the knuckles (it would also severely lose strength were that the case), so the excess in the hand and wrist would have a lot of other bone around and tissue around them to essentially hold them in place, doubly so if flexing. For the claws Tyranth would basically be able to make an extension that goes over or under the hand and straps down to the wrist and it still being roughly canonical if he cared for that. Much stronger as well.
@mickeyspeer5670
@mickeyspeer5670 3 ай бұрын
Haha was gonna mention having the claws rest more on the top of your hand rather than the front of the knuckles for a more accurate representation but seems everyone already jumped on that. Like to see claws that that rest on the top flat of your hand. Maybe have a strap to grip so you can get more brace. And for wolverine, maybe have something that goes down your arm a bit to keep the wrist from folding back. (Since wolverine is all metal in there, im sure it helps brace him) Could give it like a 5 degree rise or something for more maneuverability. Still a fun video. And regardless if how deep claws cut. Feel the impact could still subdue someone

My understanding of Wolverine's claws is that they are sharp on all edges Also I can't help but wonder if the thicker blades would help add momentum to your swings We all understand now that it's not slicing through things like the comics but if you're leaving heavy gashes it's still somewhat effective. Either way I found this entertaining and insightful can't wait for the next one 😊

To be fair for the claws, they actually reside on top of the hand, in between in knuckles rather than in between the fingers. At least in the comics anyway, the movies I'd assume needed to make the claws different so that Hugh Jackman could have something physical as opposed to them needed to say, CGI the claws, which also makes his scenes seem more authentic but in some shots and promotional material you can still see them appearing to come from on top of the knuckles. This more than likely would help with a lot of the comfortably aspect if not the overall cutting and stabbing capabilities in general. But regardless these claws seem more like a mauling type of injury, like how actual animal claws work, rather than cutting straight through things (of course Wolverine is a super powered being so he's more than capable of slicing off anything) but that makes them even more brutal and fits his character better in my opinion.

It should be noted that there's extra weight behind those blades. The metal covers all of his skeleton and basically doubles his body weight so his muscle mass had to grow to compensate too. So he's a 5'3 man using those claws with the arm strength of a Heavyweight boxer. Also Wolverine doesn't care about a broken wrist or hyperextension since he'd heal it immediately and hit again The thickness is for rigidity. They're not really "blades" as much as they're more akin to M1917 trench knives. They were also known as "knuckle dusters" because they had a guard that was basically brass knuckles. So that's how it should be used; cut the poker off of three m1917s and weld them straight forward onto the plate of brass knuckles. You also wouldn't see the blades spreading like can be seen in the footage since you're starting with them spread and that only exacerbates the more "meat" you put between them. It should also be noted that the fictional alloy is stronger and sharper than any other alloy. So basically three razor thin edged undullable titanium shanks for punching. The slashing is secondary.

i believe that logans claws actually lock his wrist in place and are actually shorter than in the films because of this. they were also ( in the 90's cartoon we all love) less blades and more pointy cylinders as would be the case where his natural claws were simply coated in adamantium and not shaped in way. this two points might warrant a follow up video.

I'm seconding to the thought that the blades could be connected to the forearms of Wolverine, giving much more stability when used, and this could be supported by the footage that I've seen so far, Wolverine used a straight fist giving the feeling, the claws are part of his forearm, basically locking his wrist in place. Maybe a brace that goes over the forearms like a cast, or how they fix broken bones with sticks and cloth type of structure but made out of proper materials suitable for the purpose. Cool video!;))

I suspect that the original art for Wolverine's claws were meant to duplicate the form factor we see in animal claws, i.e., with that inward curve. The thing is, animals may slash with their claws, but that's incidental to their design purpose: grasping and holding prey and pulling it closer to the animals primary offensive weapons: their teeth. If Wolverine had teeth like Sabretooth and used them like an animal, though, that would run counter to the artists' mall ninja worldview.

A minor improvement would be to make all the blades parallel. In your current setup, the blades are a few degrees off of parallel from each other. This is causing the blade separation you noticed when stabbing. It also means that your, let's say, tip alignment is only ever good for one blade at a time. This would make thrusting much harder.

Great work on the designs, very creative brainstorming on how to make them better. You'd think the claws version would be better because, well, claws...they work for animals...lol. But when you get to thinking about it and how the Wolverine set are used, they become more like small swords used for both cutting and stabbing; unlike animal claws which will really mangle prey but won't cut through like a saber. It's been a while since watching the Xmen movies but Wolverine is still my nostalgic favorite of all the characters. Thanks for another fun episode.

I have to be honest: I always hated Wolverine’s claws. They never seemed biomechanically sound to be useful. I am more a fan of the Yautja/Predator wrist blades because they resemble two weapons that exist in real life: the Indian pata and katars. The pata in particular is a gauntlet with a blade attached at the end, and while the pata and the Yautja gauntlet have different blade positions, they use the same biomechanics, and with them strongly fastened to the forearm, they are more sturdy than Wolverine’s claws.

Biomechanically sound? I don't see an issue. There are animals that already have similar biomechanics to extend and retract various...appendages. Sure it kind of sucks that he has to rip his own flesh open to extend them, but as far as evolution goes...normally this would be a problem since that would massively increase the chance of infection. However, Logan doesn't need to worry because he's got the most effective immune system imaginable. Honestly, the only concern I would have for them is after they were given the sharp adamantium edges...how exactly would his body prevent them from cutting their way out of his own arms? I'd say that's easily handwaved away by saying that the adamantium was specially molded there so that the tendons holding onto those bones aren't endangered by the sharp sections

The increased pain in the hand is likely due to the amount of force required to keep your wrist from bending. With the 'reverse Wolverine', the blades are contacting and dragging through less surface area during a slash, due to the direction of the curve. Also yeah, the claws really only work in comics because they look cool - in the 90's X-Men comics, they used to draw 'ports' on the backs of his hands that the claws came out of - that always made more sense visually than between the knuckles, to me.

Everything comes down to locking the wrists, with a traditional katar there are stabilizing bars that extend along the forearm, and for a Yautja wristblade, they are part of a bracer that is secured to the forearm. If Logan had some biomechanical means of locking his wrists then strikes would be pretty solid, unless his muscles are "super" strong I really can't see him having a great deal of power with relatively "normal" wrist strength. The big problem with several parallel blades is any strike force is split between the individual blades, a single strong blade will transmit far more force per strike.

I think this is the first time the plastic models thickness was close to correct to what the cannon thickness would be since wolverines claws started out as bone spikes until his skeleton got its adamantium dip. I believe he also primarily uses them as a thrusting weapon like the push/ punch dagger rather then a slashing weapon as far as I can remember, though I could be wrong its been probably 11 years since I last watched or read any of the X-Men.

At lease when I would read in the 90'S the claw did not come from the knuckles but more the back of the hands (causing his fist to be curved and not strait. At the time the close also locked his wrist into place as the claw was still in his arm at the base.

The claws diverge; that is to say they are not parallel. Despite stylization, Wolverine claws need to be parallel in order that all three claws may thrust at a viable angle. This may also impact edge alignment, though I'm not as sure about that one.

One thing I think is always forgotten when it comes to Wolverine's claws; at the end of the day they're claws, not swords or knives. And they should be used as such. Think about how animals' claws work; they're really only sharp at the end and they basically just do draw cuts with the tips. That's why Wolverine's claws are shaped that way. It's fine for there to be more of a blade along the length, considering they're actually bones coated in Adamantium, so perhaps they could have sharpened edges (although that would probably be much rougher on the insides of his arms/hands while retracted 😅), although there's no really reason why they couldn't be sharpened on both sides at that point. More versatility and all that. But at the end of the day (regardless where they're sharpened) you'd mostly be "cutting" by using draw cuts with the tips, rather than the edge. I feel like the inverse edge would be much more useful that way and you'd probably get much better results. Although, I guess it wouldn't slice in the same way it's shown to do in the comics and movies, but still 😅🤷‍♂. Having the edges sharpened would mostly just give the added versatility of be able to also use them as knives and to stab deeper, but still.

I don’t use the terminal for MC because of the raids. I quick travel to the MC Club House. Which is central to my MC business. Check the three main ones disbanding the MC in between. That way I am not in the MC that long and less likely to trigger a raid. If I do get a raid I am in the area to deal with it. I have taken a chance at times at the terminal. Then had to fly all the way to the business to save it.

The movie claws come out between his knuckles. The animated series and comics had them come out from the top of the hand behind the knuckles.

The inwards curve is because they are literally claws. They are meant to hook and hold originally. The metal coating gave then an edge after the fact.

I mean... Wolverine didn't exactly choose them, it was his mutation, it also helps that his whole skeleton is made of Adamantium("super metal"), including his claws, which means they never lose sharpness and his has a much more ridged form thanks to the Adamantium. What's interesting is that he canonically can use them individually, he can extend only one of them, which probably would make them a bit better, since the force doesn't get split between three blades. He rarely if at all uses them like that though.

I wonder if you plan on more functional weapons from the X-Men movies/comics/animated series? Would like to see you try to replicate Gambit’s extendable bo staff and/or his playing cards to be used more like throwing stars. Don’t expect you to make the cards explosive. But could have them on fire for effect.

Without Wolverines enhanced physiology, I do wonder if they could do a little better with parallel blades for us normal folk. And yes, some wrist/forearm brace/support, as im sure he has extra muscles in his arms to help support his claws.

So, for a mutant with Wolverine's strength and stamina they should work rather well. Especially considering the material they are made off. Pain is something Wolverine is used to as his claws always cut through some flesh and skin every time he lets out the claws. Also, there is huis healing factor. Not ideal by any means in comparison to other weapons, but he can't be disarmed and not many have ways to tie someone up that includes the claws. Sometimes in the past Wolverine's claws have been depicted as straight. That was before they added to the canon that he had bone claws before the adamantium was added.

Definitely deserves a redesign and further testing. Wolverine's claws were an extention of his bone structure (exotic metal alloy). I think some more extensive frame that is supported by your forearm would probably transmit much more power and spread the load more evenly...

Wolverines Claw come out of his underarm, and they are also attacked and hence stabilized further by other muscles and bones (which are unique to him due to his mutation) into his underarm. To simulate that, you had to extent the hilt further around your hand and / or further around the underarm and wrap it around the underarm. That would make both thrusting and slashing better. Many Katars have something similar.

Keep in mind wolverine has his entire adamantium skeleton augmenting the strength and functionality of just the claws. Holding it in your hand vs having it be part of the arm would be worlds aoart.

As a standard human weapon of course they don’t make sense. But with superhuman strength, superhuman healing factor, the fact that they’re made from adamantium, and that they’re coming from between his knuckles and come from his forearm it makes perfect sense.

How about the concept of only a single wolverine claw extended rather than all 3 as he can control for which claws extend.

Thing is, the movies mucked up his claws in the process of trying to make them cooler. And whole they arguably accomplished making them seem cooler, in the process they made things that don't even work well as knives. I noticed that from the very first movie. Not that his original comic book claws were perfect by any means, but they were perfectly suited to grappling, catching swords, stabbing The Hulk, and all kinds of other things Wolvie did. Wolverine would only slash and cut things in the same way cats and actual wolverines do, and theoretically that makes sense. At the very least, it is far more plausible than making them into knives that make each other less effective simply by existing close enough to each other to negate the whole point of bladed weapons: focusing force into a single small point or edge rather than 3.

The knives obviously need the “magical adamantium alloy” to do the job. I mean, the claws should be able to go through steel even, right(?), and other obvious hard materials.
