Another great video. Would be very helpful if you put out another one for top plates and other studs of studs.

If you use a notch in a 2x4 and plan to run wires or plumbing through them, it is absolutely necessary to put a steel plate over the notch. In my opinion, notching a 2x4 is a just a bad idea. If you don't steel plate the notch, and someone hangs a picture and nails through to the wiring or plumbing, and the nail hits it ... you're screwed.

You can't tell me that last bit wasn't a pun. If it was intentionally a pun, you nailed it.

Good video 👍. What is the code for notching a fire block stud on an exterior wall?

I recently had my bathroom remodeled. The idiot contractor notched out the interior corner studs for the water pipes but the notches are about 70% of the stud. Each stud has two notches. How do I go about attempting to fix this? How can I add stability back to the studs ?

How many holes can you put in the same 2×4?
@rickybrown65856 ай бұрын
You just have to space them out 6" from any adjacent hole.. unless it's 3/4 or less size hole, then the spaces of each hole is 1.5" apart... All this is just for studs.

What is the minimum location that the bored hole can be below or above the notch?

Hi! I didn’t see anything on the code, just says nothing within the cross section of the notch 🙏🏽😊👍🏽

In the case of a load bearing stud isn't the depth about 1 1/2 " instead of 3 1/2? Isn't 3 1/2 " the width?

🙋 That information is ; not to exceed one-fourth the height of the stud. Notching shall not occur in the bottom or top 6" of bearing studs. R602.6 in NC residential code book made by IPC. You may want to notch it verticality to recess something or run multiple things through like a chase...liquid line set, Condensation lines water lines gas lines...If you had to I guess 🤷

You would not want a long notch because assuming it’s 2X4’s and your 7/8 inches deep, you need to cover plate the wiring. At that depth, I would also cover EMT, I’ve seen people drill dry wall screws dead center into piping. I almost always drill holes, not crazy about notching.

Hello! I'm an apprentice plumber. Im studying mechanical properties and protection of building materials and structures. My book says maximum diameter of bored hole is 40% of stud depth, not %60. That limitation is for boring in interior partition. Can you double check please?
@rickybrown65856 ай бұрын
That'd for drilling holes not notching, they have different rules.

You said dont put notch and hole in same area/level but what should be min. vertical distance between them?

The stud still needs to be able to support its own weight, plus the weight of the drywall attached to it, as well as resist buckling due to lateral force (like if a person or a piece of furniture leans against it)
