Since this one comes up a lot: Mortimer was NOT Mickey's original name. It's a common misunderstanding. Mortimer was never the mouse's name. It was an idea when Walt first started to sketch out ideas that his wife very quickly nixed. It was one of a couple suggestions, but Mickey came pretty quickly and stuck when he was still trying to finalize his look. Mortimer did actually get used for another mouse much later on though: disney.wikia.com/wiki/Mortimer_Mouse

I remember Mortimer. He's flashy and arrogant, but also a coward. He's like the Gaston of Mickey's Universe. I didn't even know he was still around since I've only seen him in his debut animation.

Has anyone else gotten nervous when talking to a character, like you're not sure what to say to them or you're worried people will think you're weird for going to see a character when you're an adult?

Absolutely. All the time. It's actually quite normal. I'll also add that to my list for my next Q&A :-)

SirWillow Thanks. :). I was actually a former Cast member myself and worked in the costuming department where I helped to get the uniforms ready for fellow cast members through late 2010 to mid 2012. I actually did want to become a photo pass photographer, but since I have tunnel vision, they advised me against it.

This is already pretty much been answered, but as a former 'mascot' myslef, I can assure you: most of us are trained on how to deal with almost any kind of person out there. It's perfectly fine if you're a little nervous about meeting us. We are trained on how to read body postures and facial expressions. (what we can see of it, that is.) If someone, like you, is approaching us and they happen to look a little nervous, we usually extend a hand for a handshake, sign autographs (if applicable) and we only go for a hug if the person moves for it. (like you did) We also will NEVER approach someone who looks a little unsure. We typically stand in that spot, and let the guest move to us. We want YOU to have fun, and be comfortable. If you're ever unsure, talk to our handlers or asssistants. ^^ They can and will, answer any questions, as Sir Willow said. A TRUE character actor will NEVER force you to interact with them. Those 'fur suiters', have pretty much destroyed the hard work professionals put into preformances.

Talking Mickey kind of threw me off. He walks up to me "hi so nice to see you again!" I was like "omg you can talk. I was last here when I was 10 this is weird". You should add that being at the park alone or as an adult with no kids, don't be shy about meeting characters. I felt a little wierd meeting Aladdin in a line of mostly kids, but it was fun.

I've been thinking about going to Disneyland as an adult for awhile (haven't been there since I was 11), and I was wondering if any adults stood in line to meet characters. I feel like it would be a little weird, in like, what do you say to someone who pretends to be this character all day and can't break character?
@tigerfanfrv
@tigerfanfrv 7 жыл бұрын
I was 32 when I went, by myself. I felt a little weird standing in line, but it was fun. (I waited until later in the day to see them) talk about whatever you want. when I spoke with Mickey, I said "hi, good to see you again" he asked me questions, I answered. the same with Tinkerbell. Goofy and Donald don't speak but they interact. we all know it is just some person in a costume, but if you suspend disbelief a little you can have a good time.

I learned that you need to be aware of the speed you approach the Character. I was at dinner waiting for our food when Ariel appeared out of nowhere. I grabbed two dinglehoppers off the table and "briskly" approached her. Well some other cast members felt my approach was a bit too threatening because they quickly made a human shield and insisted I "put the forks down!" I complied, apologized, explained my intent and was able to renegotiate a photo with Ariel and the dinglehoppers. It was defiantly a "scanned my brain out at the gate" moment but I think about it everytime I look at that photo. "Oh that one time I was almost tackled by Ariel's security."

Something I would like to add to the "Do" list. One day during my May trip. I was eating at Tusker House for a character breakfast. When I knew I would have time to go up and get some more food and not to have to worry about missing one of the characters, I got up, and as I was walking to where the food is, I noticed something. When one of the characters was at a table, and a cast member working there needed to get by, he or she would say "Coming up behind you Donald". And I learned quickly from that and did that myself when I was about to walk behind one of the characters. So if in a certain circumstance where you need to walk behind a character to get by, Do let them know that you're walking behind them. Oh and another I would like to add for when you're at a character meal, Do offer to help other guests at nearby tables get pics with the characters. I was by myself during my time there, so getting pics with some of the characters during meals was a little tricky. Thankfully some guests at tables near mine were nice enough to offer their help! And I gladly did the same for them when they asked. The characters will appreciate it too! I remember Goofy giving me a handshake as if to say "Thanks pal" when I offered to help take a picture for the couple he was greeting.
@SirWillow
@SirWillow 8 жыл бұрын
Good points. The "behind you..." is very nice at meals where there is a lot of movement going on. If you're at a meet and greet area it's better to avoid going behind them, but at the meals that's often not possible. If you're at a meet and greet the photographer or character attendant will also be happy to use your camera for you, but they're usually not available at the meals, so that's a great heads up!

Former CP from EPCOT here. I was working at the Moroccan ice cream cart between Japan and Morocco back when they had the double decker character bus. A mother and her little boy cane to buy ice cream a told me they were going to meet Mickey in a few moments. I said oh that's so exciting! Little boy say yes but I'm kinda scared to. I replied oh it's ok to be scared but I'll tell you what Mickey is the nicest mouse very kind and lots of fun! The little boy thought it over and they left. Character bus arrived and I was thinking of him hoping he'd have a magical experience Mickey. I helped a guest out I turned my head at the right moment saw Mickey kneeling down and that little boy raced int Mickey's arms. Something I will never forget. 2nd I was helping with a catering event behind the scenes for make a wish. A rare skin condition that these kids skin breaks easily we were not allowed to be any where near them. We decided to peek in from overhead to see how the kids were enjoying their time and the food. We saw Mickey and friends enter. The pure joy and happiness of these very sick kids made me tear up a bit. Another memory I will never forget!

Some of the best experiences happened two years ago when visiting Epcot during October. My husband and I were there on our honeymoon and waiting in line to see Chip-N-Dale. We had our "happily ever after" buttons on. When it came our time to meet them they immediately noticed our buttons and congratulated us. After Chip took me to the side, and Dale my husband, and proceeded to ask me if he #1 had money, #2 to kill him, #3 bury the body ... it was so hilarious and totally meant for us adults being towards the end of the line. They of course were just joking and made a point to say that. At our character breakfast The Mad Hatter asked about our celebration and was hilarious .. upon looping back around he stopped to chat with me for a moment (I was alone at our table) and said "did your husband run out on you already?! My word! You got yourself a winner" haha It's totally awesome that the characters will act a bit more "adult" if it's just adults meeting them.

Well, Uncle Walt himself said he never wanted any of his projects to talk down to his audience, whether they be 1-year-old or 101-years-old. For remember, "Adults are just kids grown-up, anyway" & that's the thought process going into the parks, more or less. It's like being a kid again yourself, but also having the adult sensibility to respect the characters you're going to encounter.

I left that day feeling 1000% better because all of the characters were terribly nice and chatty!

When I was a little kid, my mother took me on our annual visit to Disney Land, California and bought me (at that time really late 80's early 90's) a Mickey Mouse hat with a squeaky nose and Donald duck was standing outside the gift shop, saw my hat, came running over, I hugged him and he proceeded to squeak the nose on my hat till it broke. Of course I was a little bummed, but my mom reminded me I got the story on how Donald Duck squeaked my hat to death. Lol. Gosh the way you explained why little kids get so scared of mascots was exactly how I felt seeing Piglet for the first time when I was very young and my parents had us go to the dinner event. Basically I was super stoked to see the characters after we had finished our meals and saying hello to Pooh and Tigger was the greatest feeling ever. However once I caught a glimpse of Piglet , my face quickly turned into pure fright and I dove under the cloth table to hide from him. I legit was expecting the actual little-sized Piglet to come out, not some horrid version of my favorite character only a nightmare could have! My parents tried coaxing me out but every time I peeked, monster Piglet got closer to the table which only made me more afraid. They gave up eventually but I'm really glad they didn't try to force me out there. Still had a great time at Disneyland despite that! If anything the worst part just might be the fact that they still bring it up to my relatives as a joke.

If you go to meet some, just relax. You did good in not stepping on Pluto's tail (your mom shouldn't have told you to do that, or tried to force you). Remember that they are there for you to have a good time and enjoy the experience, not to scare you. If you need to, take a younger child and follow their lead. I've seen a couple of nervous adults do that and it helped.

here is one we experience quite often. We're a child free couple. So when you're behind that couple without children..don't assume we wandered in the wrong line. I am a HUGE Disney fan..down to I have a Mickey wedding band. So I want to be in line!!! But at least twice during our day..some parents behind us will tell their snowflakes to go ahead of us..because we don't have children!!! My husband is 6'3 and intimidating so he dials it down for that reason. I..however..am not and will quickly let you know you are not getting in front of me!!!

Susan Burris Same here. I love Disney, and getting a chance to 'meet' your favorite characters is amazing! Only a heartless monster wouldn't be excited about meeting someone there! That Mickey wedding band is AWESOME! I've never had that exact experience with other guests ( telling their kids to cut in front of me) that being said, I'm pretty tall, and wall with a cane, so I can easily block the aisle. Or ' accidentally' trip them. XD I have had another adult try to cut, but I just pretended I didn't hear them talking, and made sure to leisurely block the line so they couldn't.

One of my favorite things to do is ask the characters about other characters. One time I met Merida and asked if she ever had an Archery Contest with Robin Hood. She said she hasn't yet so I became her hype man saying that if she can hit a bullseye AND split an arrow in half at the same time, she can give the fox a run for his money. She was SO down for it. We even set up wagers for the contest. If Merida won, she'd win his hat. If Robin Hood won, Merida would have to make him one of her cakes. It was awesome!! I'm hoping I get the opportunity to do that type of stuff again like asking Elsa if she ever helped Bambi ice skate or if Mary Poppins ever babysat for Pongo and Perdita's pups.

"Hey, look! It's Chip and Dip!"
@TherealRNOwwfpooh
@TherealRNOwwfpooh 6 жыл бұрын
Well, to be fair, one of the foreign Chip 'n Dale pairs is called that (Actually, it is just the country's equivalent of Chip 'n Dale, with Dale sounding like Dip due to the country's hard accent) if you've watched & listened to the Multiple Language version of the _Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers_ theme song: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5OtaIB8pcukeJI & kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4DUkKKKfLytrdk That said, if a guest is from the country that recognizes them as that rather than the Americanized form of their names, it's more of a difference in translation than anything else, because other countries may only know what their versions of characters are called & not the original American names. To that end, it's nice to help tell the guest using an interpreter what the American names are called so they don't feel embarrassed for calling the chipmunks different names if they visit the American parks. Plus, the whole "Chippendales" joke concerning their names is overdone, even though the male strip dancing club may be what gave the two chipmunks their names, to begin with. But actually worse is calling them Alvin & The Chipmunks (as the ornery son of a family who routinely visits the parks kept doing in video interactions with them). After all, Alvin, Simon & Theodore are a musical chipmunk trio (alongside The Chipettes Britney, Jeanette & Eleanor) owned by Ross Bagdasarian Productions in conjunction with another company that is NOT Disney whatsoever. Like was said in the video, it is better to know who the characters are before meeting them & having conversation pieces ready, so you can engage in small talk to make interactions more meaningful. Perhaps strike up a conversation about if they have been driving Donald nutty lately or if you're a TDAft fan & the performers know their _Rescue Rangers_ history, ask them how Gadget, Monty & Zipper are (if they've seen them since the show ended, that is).

Last time I went to Disney World it was so I could help my mom with my 2 little brothers (3 and 7) which had never gone to the parks before so I planned and circled all the places we would go and tried to keep us on schedule so much I forgot to enjoy myself, then I was looking at my map unaware that King Louie was behind me moking my serious face and making kids laugh, when I noticed I couldn't help but laugh too. it was amazing and it reminded me how much fun I always have there.

Yep! In Disney we called it "keeping the magic" and I'm a firm believer in it. So much so that I didn't say it in the video on purpose because I didn't even want to hint at it. It's why you won't hear me reference things in my videos that might do that. When you meet a character, it is that character. That's Mickey. Or Minnie. Or Donald. Or Goofy. Or the princess, Belle, Snow White, etc., etc. Please don't be a doofus and act otherwise. :-)

I've been a trained character actor for a while, and let me just confirm: whether we can 'talk' or not, we LOVE talking and interacting with people!! And that's carried over when I meet characters at Disney and Universal. Jack and Sally spent a LOT of time with me because I was being interactive to them. One of many, things I did with them, was doing this; "Might I have the Pumpkin King and Queens' autograph?" seriously people, know your characters. Since it was in mid November, Haunted Mansion Holiday was still up, and I asked how it went putting up all the decorations. Again, I had a long, and really satisfying CONVERSATION with two of my favorite movie characters. People who don't spend any time as an actor can't understand how amazing it feels to have guests interacting. We don't like feeling ignored. XD

I remember going to Universal Islands of Adventure when I was 14, and came across a guy wearing a Spider-Man costume. He was talking to some other guests. I was like, "I thought you guys are not allowed to talk to the customers." He explained that the human characters are. The animal or mascot character remain silent. He also added, because a kid passed by, "Besides, I'm the real Spider-Man."

My school did a Disney princess event and it was taken... seriously to say the least. We all had to dress up and be in character and of course my choir teacher being the lovely woman she is casted me as Ursula. DONT MAKE A KID TAKE A PICTURE WITH SOMEONE THEY DONT WANT TO!!! It's not fun for anyone. I wanted to cry with the kids that were made to go near me 😂 it's not the kids fault. I'm about to turn 17 and wouldn't step near Olaf at the school event, let alone any other 'fur' or full body mascot like costume. It's just. Save the chaos. He spoke about it but for a character it's just as uncomfortable. If not worse. I've never been rejected by so many two year olds.

SirWillow oh definitely! I had a lot of fun with the adults actually which I didn't expect, lots of parents thought I was "so cool" and took lots of pictures. Also the kids that weren't afraid were so adorable, I'm super tall so I had to kneel down for most of the pictures with the younger kids and this one girl was so adorable and sat on my lap and hugged me, it was the cutest thing. Basically everything was fun outside of the scared kids, the few that weren't scared made my entire week

When I was six, I went to Disneyland and was having a tough day. It was hot, I was sunburnt because how sensitive my skin is (trust me, no matter how many times I apply sunscreen, I still get burnt), and I was tired. I was walking around with my parents in Toontown, all grumpy, and suddenly I felt a hand on my shoulder. When I turned around, I saw it was Mickey and gave him a big hug, my mood exceptionally better. That was one of my best memories from Disneyland. 😊

There are a couple more I'd like to add as well. First, please stand where we ask you to stand and put any things you don't want in the photo where we ask you to (sometimes we'll even offer to take them fore you). Whenever your party is going up to meet a character, we have anyone else in the party stand on the other side of the photographer and they can still hop in to meet the character if they so desire. We do this for a couple of reasons. One, it eliminates any confusion about who is with who. Two (and this is the main one) the photographers and attendants are constantly moving to get pictures/aid the character so it makes it safer for not only us (not tripping over little children/bags/ ECVs/strollers/kneeling parents with their cameras etc) but you as well. Secondly, if you want to do certain combinations of photos (like individuals of your children with the character or a big family photo) please tell the photographer and/or character as soon as possible. If you just tell the photographer, that's okay, we can alert the character for you when it's time. It just makes it much easier for everyone because we know what to expect and it's also common courtesy.

Anyway, a few years later we went to Disney world and got the princesses to sign my dolls. It took us at least two vacations to find all the princesses but we eventually got them all signed and my mom made this shadow box. Now all the dolls are signed and in a shadow box and we keep it hanging in our living room. Every princess was so excited to sign the dolls except Cinderella I think she was having a bad day because she signed it upside down. But I still got it signed anyway that's my character greet memory

When I worked for Six Flags, guests would call Daffy "Donald". Interesting to know each company got their ducks reversed! I've also gotten Chuck E Cheese called "Mickey Mouse", though not as Frequently as Daffy was Called "Donald". One, of the Silliest Character mix-up was between two of our own Looney Tune characters: Sylvester and Pepe Le Pew. I dunno how a Skunk looks like a Cat and a Cat looks like a Skunk, but they were constantly being mixed up. I also had one rare case a little girl called Chuck E Cheese "Bugs Bunny". I was at an outdoor Halloween event in costume (as a guest) and people kept touching me (my wig, horns, shoulder) and randomly touching people that worked there as a guide or whatever. Not the scare actors, just actors in costume playing their role. I've seen people do the same at theme parks. The random touching from behind, the shoving, the groping. It's crazy. I wanted to do a follow up from my questions to you (and advice to folks coming behind me) in regards to SANTA at Disney - and visiting with toddlers. I understand that I was told to have the kids watch Disney movies including the characters...well, with 11 month olds - they really don't watch movies. But, boy, do they watch Disney Jr.. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse? What young parent doesn't know "the Hot Dog Dance" by heart. And when they heard a voice of the original characters (and also Winnie the Pooh and Tigger) they were totally aware of the characters. Regarding Santa...since he is only seasonal, it's hard to get kids that young used to him. He's not on T.V. that early. But we did start showing them some Christmas song videos. And while in line we brought up a picture of Santa from Google images for them to see. The Santa at Disney Springs looked authentic - no picture perfect Coca-Cola/Rockwell - but like a Santa that has been doing the job and coming to see children for years - the perfect Grandfather Christmas image. My twin grandsons were sat on his lap and I said a prayer there wouldn't be a poorly planned moment of elimination or spit up. Without a word, the boys took turns looking into Santa's eyes as if they could read each others' minds. We have PERFECT pictures of them looking up at him with wonder. As for photo pass? The pictures were uploaded immediately and we could see these fantastic, captured moments before we could get our hot chocolate at Ghirardelli's. It's amazing what a Disney-level professional can do without a word - and the excellent photographers too. Wish I could upload a picture and show you their work... amazing. So yes, show toddlers the pictures right before they turn the corner and see Santa or the characters. (one mishap though... meeting Mickey was great. The actor inside was on the short side - so Mickey wasn't this huge being that towered over mom and dad. The boys loved him... but in the very last second, Mickey reached out to ... perhaps pat one of the boys of the cheek? Maybe? ... and one boy cried out in a little scream. It surprised us all since up to that moment, and after that, everything was just fine. Overall... great work by Disney characters and photographers alike!!

I'd love to see the pictures. If you bought the disk or a digital image it includes a copyright release which will allow you to do just about anything with the pictures except make money off of them, so it is perfectly legal to upload and share them online, make copies, make as many prints as you want, etc. If you buy just the prints, then it's understood that you will likely make a scan into a computer and keep that for a "safe" copy in case of loss. They don't mind that really as the scan will be less detailed than the original, as long as you aren't making extra copies of it.

Sometimes it can be weird if your an older teen or adult and you want to meet characters. I recommend asking them about their friends in the story, or the background of the room, or even about what their wearing. It can be kind of awkward the first time, but trust me that character will gladly start up a conversation whether they can talk or not. They meet so many people every day, it’s not weird to them. For example, if you meet Ariel ask her about Flounder or if she’s found any cool new trinkets. She’ll gladly tell you about it and nobody will think you’re weird.

Kenny Robinson Omg my mum did this at WDW. It was an incredibly hot and humid August day and we were getting photos with Timon and Pumbaa in the middle of the day, when it was at its hottest. My mum asked the attendant pretty loudly "I feel so sorry for you guys! it must be so hot right now." then she turned to Timon and asked point blank "Poor guy. How do you cope in such a heavy costume?! Is it true that you have little fans in there to cool you down?" Now, mybsister and I were old enough to know that there were people in that costume, but the groups of very children around most likely defi definitely didn't. Pumba started waving his hands and shaking his head at mum as if to tell her "Shut up now!" The attendant had to quickly step in: "Timon and Pumba have a special watering hole that they go to have a break and cool down, i don't think they have a fan, only Simba has that special royality privilege!"

My best Disney memories happened with characters. Like the time Ariel gave me a Dinglehopper for my birthday or dancing with Cinderella or especially when I met Ariel in her grotto and then later on at Cinderella's Royal Table I saw her again and she remembered me from my visit earlier.

When my sister and I met Rapunzel, we brought a small Pascal plush to show her and she was SO EXCITED! It was the sweetest thing :)

My parents will never forget how terrific Chip and Dale were when my sister first met characters at a dinner and realized how large they all were and thus was very scared. They waved at her from across the room until they could come closer and get her to smile and only at the end of dinner, when she was ready, did they come up and pose for pictures with her.

One of my favorite pictures with the Disney Characters was in 2006, when they still had the Character dinner at the Liberty Tree Tavern, we got a picture with Minnie, Goofy, Pluto, and chip and Dale all in the same picture. That was cool, probably one of my favorite pictures with the Disney Characters. I wonder why they stopped doing the Character dinner at the Liberty Tree Tavern.

When I was around 2, I went to meet Aurora (I forget where she was at the time) and we ended up playing with leaves :3 I have the picture framed in my room and it's one of the few things I remember about my first trip to Disney World.
