Can KZbin help me become a better fisherman? Do scents and attractants really help you catch more fish? In this video I examine eleven different scents made to attract fish. Some of them claim to make fish hold on to your lure for longer periods of time. Can any of these scents or attractants actually help you catch more fish? Or do they do a better job catching your money? There are many fish attractants out there from shad and crawfish scents to garlic, coffee, or anise. Please comment below with your opinion on scents and if you think they actually help people catch more fish.

I wrote a 28-page term paper on fish scents for my Fisheries/Eco Sys biologist certification. Bottom line without the 28 pages of argumentative crap: They work for some species in some situations. For largemouth bass, no real help on the Ambush, Reaction or Pursuit type strikes. Finesse fishing 'slow plastics' with scents can provide benefits. Bass will inhale a slow-moving bait bounce it off of their taste bud pads and rejected or accept it in a Split Second. Bottom-line on scents, there is no yes or no. But there is a time and place. If you're going to use a scent for bass use gels with emulsion and amino acid additives. And this is just my opinion. I have asked several fish what they like and they just don't seem to respond. But I will let you know if one ever talks back to me....

If it has any advantage at all, I think I am happy with it. I don't think it prevents them from biting so its worth experimenting. Interesting topic for sure. Thanks for the comment.

I wouldn't think that it'd help trigger strikes, but does it help bass hold baits longer and deeper? The biggest problem I have when fishing plastics weightless is that there's always slack in the line and when fish strike, I can't hookset immediately.

I remember watching my Dad cook a concoction of olive oil, garlic, salt, and distilled water 20+ years ago and it seemed to work very well.... But he could catch fish anywhere at anytime of the year regardless. Also, my grandparents kept a bottle of anise oil in their tackle boxes, my grandmother would catch fish on a piece of cotton ball with anise. If it worked back then I don't see why it wouldn't now.

I'd say some times fish scents can help catch more fish. I've been in the boat and as my friends would use my yum shad scent while I would use crWf8sh they would hit his bait more. then I added shad scent to mine and I got more hits then I was with crayfish. so scents do work better at different times of the year

Yeah I caught a lot of fish on gulp minnows. Many different species. I have fished at only one pressured pond and it worked. On that pond I tried plastics, spinners, and etc with no results. I will try gulp minnows on another pressured pond to test it out. I have cut up a minnow and used it under a bobber because I kept getting my dough, fireballs, and live bait getting stolen and picked off.

I did a video on this same subject back in December, and I'll sum it up for you here: I don't put any soft plastics in the water until after I make them stink pretty. I've proven it to myself over and over. The article that I referenced in my video explains it the best. Wish I could find it... but it was in a F&S magazine over 40 years ago.

What about the scent do you think makes it work?
@rodfather_bass_fishing
@rodfather_bass_fishing 7 жыл бұрын
For me... there are two primary reasons it works. The first and most important is to make sure it doesn't smell like "us". The second is more complicated but involves how a fish (primarily bass) use sight, sound, lateral line, smell, and taste to find and investigate potential food sources.

I just found a bottle of the gulp liquid refill at Walmart for 75¢. On closeout for some reason. I got the last one. In my opinion it's a watery version their gel attractant. It smells about the same to me, I added it and some shrimp oil to my worms. We'll see what happens after they soak that up.

Hello. So I just bought this Mayhem bass attractant so I will test this out this weekend hopefully. I have fished this place several times.. Bass are very finicky at the private lodge I go too.. There are some really big bass there.. seen them spawning on the shore. Anywhere from 3 to 5lbs even seems to me.. I will be using my gopro and will see if that stuff really do make a difference.. Rarely catch fish so this will test this product out. I will come back to this post and give me honest review on that Liquid Mayhem attractant.

I learned the benefits of scents when I was just a kid. While bank fishing in a shallow creek using greasy bacon, I watched a passing fish do a complete u-turn, swim back & forth upstream following that scent, grabbing the hook without hesitation. Bacon isn't as effective anymore (too lean - not greasy enough), but I still use scents on my lures.

I think the stuff like dip n dye is great because the main benefit is changing the presentation of your bait. The scent is more of a "cover up" of the chemical dye smell i think. I use the chartreuse and orange garlic scented dip n dye on almost all of my soft plastics. Not sure if the scent is beneficial or not but i think being able to modify the presentation definitely helps. i like dipping the tails of senkos & flukes in the chartreuse and the claws for craws in the orange.

I haven't tried any of these. Some brand or another of Anise has been around forever, I remember using it over 30 years ago, can't say it worked then. I did start using Megastrike last year in their garlic scent and my catch ratio went up right away. I agree with the comment below, I think it makes the fish hold on to it longer, not attract them. I also tried the Megastrike in crayfish scent, never caught a fish on it.

I have never seen a great difference with or without scent. What difference I have noticed is when I bottom fish for catfish. I stumbled upon using cheap hotdog pieces for bait and found that a piece of hotdog that has been cooked and is good and greasy always catches more fish than one that is cold and not greasy. I tested this side by side several times. So from my experience with catfish, I believe that smell plays a big part with them so I would think it would for other species but like I said, no luck with anything else. I have heard from many people that Gulp is the only thing that really works.

I have a buddy who uses Spike It garlic dip when he's had a slow day. I've seen him catch his first fish of the day after 2 hours of fishing with no luck and then catch 2 bass in 2 minutes. I've recently started using JJ's Magic. I think it has made me fish slower and catch more fish. I have found that I do like scented baits, but I only like the scents that are already in the baits. I primarily buy slayer inc. and z-man plastics, slayer has a great scent to it and z-man coats their lures in procure. I do not have as much success when I put procure on my own lures and I think its because I think it's possible to put too much.

Gulp Alive! is awesome. I use it almost year-round when ice and open water fishing. I've caught largemouth and smallmouth bass using it as well as crappie, bluegills, and walleyes. My favorite for bass are the 3-4" minnows, fished on a 1/8-1/4 oz jighead.

Yes. I put other soft plastics in the solution all the time for use later. As to whether or not I'd catch fewer fish using the same plastics without the added scent, I'm not sure. Everything in the fishing realm of soft plastics is scented these days, so it would be almost impossible to get a baseline test of scented vs. not, but it would definitely be possible to test straight out of the original package vs. added Gulp Alive! scent.

I have used plastic baits with the gulp. But I'm still not really sure if it's the reason I caught the fish. Maybe it's primary use, is to keep the bait in the fishes mouth just a bit longer. My dad used to say, if it tastes and smells like shit, the fish will like it. Not sure, but he did catch a lot of fish.

I don't think the bass care that much but they are very curious so anything different than the lures other people are using might help. I don't usually use them because they smell up all my stuff but if you think they are helping you use them.

I've tried countless scent attractants & have always had a lot of confidence in the *Smelly Jelly* line of attractants. *CB's Hawg Sauce & Kickin Bass Scent Attractants* are two very strong attractant baits that are amazing game changers. They have significantly upped my game. I can say with 100% confidence both of these attractants work miracles. IMHO the best scents ever made .. very strong & long lasting...

The only one I've used is the Gulp on their minnows. It did catch fish, but I think I would have caught them anyway. I'm going to try out some of the Gulp saltwater worms in a couples weeks. I think the scent might help while doing finesse fishing and deadsticking to entice that shy fish a little bit more and have them hold it in their mouth just a little bit longer, but I'm not going to spend too much money on it :)

Try Lip Glu fish attractant. Comes in an oil for adding to your soft plastics bags, about 10 drops in a bag and it penetrates into the soft plastics and you simply rig and fish. Really easy! They also have a Gel for use on everything from hard baits to soft plastics. Put some on and cast. It lasts a long time. You will defiantly notice a difference on the amount of strikes and how the fish hold on.

It was my understanding that all these scents were only designed to hide human odor on lures. Anise in mineral oil does the same deal. Just rubbing your hands with oregano leaves does the same.

I think it's more the action of the lure that catches the fish and the scents give an angler a false sense of security. On the realistic, you should do an experiment on that yourself and see what happens. Chase some bass with scent and chase some totally void of scent and see that difference.

Most of the baits I use have salt, fish oil, garlic, etc in them already so I don't see the point. I've used a couple a few times. The stuff just washes off first cast. I can see it adding something if you could soak the lure/bait in it over night. If it absorbed it I can see it making a small difference. If it's worth it at all, by how much is another question.

Think about it this way. In the grand scheme of things how far is that scent likely to travel without current? In both cases for both cut bait a scent attractant, without some kind of current it really doesn't travel all that far. In a body of water like a reservoir I can't see it helping that much unless you can find a underwater channel or creek inlet to help you out. I'd wager that a 3/0-5/0 with a piece of cut bait is going to put more scent, oil and amino acids into the water than a dip in some fish attractant gel or otherwise. Just my opinion though.

You are overlooking a common situation where a bass is just looking at your bait... That is when this form of scent might be beneficial. I don't think anyone expects it to draw fish from across the lake.

I've only used gulp and bait-mate but not very consistently. Gulp I can say def showed good results atleast in the ocean i was able to catch fish on artificial using gulp in the same places where i before could not get a single bite on artificial. When using the baitmate for bass the only thing i really noticed was that they held a second or 2 longer before spitting it and realzing they found a piece of plastic. one thing i did not like was that it destroyed certain soft plastics if left to soak in it. now i only use it in places where the fish are a bit finicky but over all id say its a circumstantial basis type of thing. im about to order some bass dynasty and do an experiment

I believe the biggest thing about scent is that it helps mask our human smell or other foreign smells that could get on the lures we handle while fishing; possibly turning off the fish. I always use scent on my lures and on my hand/fingertips. My favorite is Lunker Sauce which is out of production now...I'm on my last bottle :-( I also have used Mayhem, Spike-It Markers, Mega Strike and a few others. I LOVE Berkley Powerbait lures and Berkley Gulp Alive products and swear by both! On clear rivers and streams I've watched various species eat whatever Powerbait or Gulp Alive lure I was using at the time, without spitting it out prior to me setting the hook. I would do this just to see how long they would hold onto this "fake food" before I set the hook. Sometimes it would be up to 30 seconds or longer. Just a quick tip, if you're out and don't feel like using a scent, just grab a handful of grass and rub it into your hands breaking up the blades to get the oils out. This will also help mask your human odor and help your smell blend into that environment. Keep up the awesome channel!!

All of this based on a "maybe" about human scent.... I catch plenty of fish on lures I just touched with my human fingers.

I've had some luck with Gulp brand baits but I don't really understand how the scent doesn't just wash away after a few casts lol One time I bought some cheese scented worms said to catch catfish and caught bullhead after bullhead at my local river, ended the day catching a large dogfish. So maybe scent does matter sometimes? Still not sure though. Nice video, thank you for the information.

I've never used scents and attractants. I do think that if the fish holds onto the lure longer due to the scent, then it would be beneficial, but it is almost impossible to truly confirm whether they work while on the water. Makes me wonder if there are some tests done on aquarium fish... In any case, if someone isn't catching fish or decided to put on a scent and then catches a fish - they would associate that to the scent and keep using and buying them. If it increases their confidence, then that is a good thing and confidence alone will help catch more fish. By the way, love the fishing theme movie addition to the backdrop wall. Beard.

I use gulp all of the time in salt water. Off of the kayak for summer flounder I often fish two rods and have tested one rod with and one without gulp and the gulp out fishes the non scented by a lot. That gulp scent smells like fish so that males sense. What I dont understand is the garlic thing in fresh water. Why? Why not make the scents smell like fresh water fish? Or a worm scent to put on your rubber worms? There is no garlic growing in lakes and ponds... so I just dont understand.

From what I have heard, the garlic is strong enough to cover up the "human" scent that comes from the oils on our skin. It may also be so foreign to them that they attack it out of frustration. Of course I am speculating....

Okay, I don't use a lot of scented products for freshwater but I've used Berkeley Gulp Alive natural worm and just left it on the bottom of the lake motionless while I was chatting with my friend and then I see my line moving from left to right, a nice LM bass ran with it and did not want to drop it. A good 5+ seconds before I finally set the hook. ...Gulp saltwater baits is an absolute killer, nothing comes close! Nothing to even debate on. It's a miracle product and if they ever stop making it, I'll become a mere mortal of a fisherman 😭

Realistic Fishing ...I've cleared out Walmarts bins, literally boxes, when it was on clearance for $1 a pack. Lol. This is the saltwater gulps mind you. I was skeptical back in the days but it really is amazing. I mainly use it for fluke (Flounder) up here in the Northeast but I can tell you that ALL fish wants a piece of it, it's no secret what that product can do up here. I don't have any affiliation to Berkeley btw, It's just that good. You can check out some of my flounder vids and see for yourself, I know you'll slay them too.

Realistic Fishing ...I wouldn't recommend using that Gulp juice with your regular plastic worms or anything plastic like Zoom worms or senkos etc. it will eat away and melt it overnight. I don't know what it's made out of but we all tried to soak it with other brands of plastic and it's not pretty. Gulp lures are made of a different material, like a spongy rubber that is very porous. It will shrink like a shrinky-dink of left out in the air. It must be soaking or covered and moist at all times. It's ok for porkrinds and bucktails but NO Plastics or other types, you can test it out on 1 plastic worm overnight to see. But I've warned you 😂. Don't want you to ruin your supply.

I am not going to soak it. They sell it in a spray bottle so I was just going to dip it in and cast it out just to get the essance of gulp on my soft plastic lure.

The power bait crappie I have used and tested 2 rods same color jig one with out one with and I did catch more fish on the power Bait crappie . I also tested the bait mate crappie pan fish and the same happen I did get more fish on the one with the sent . But I found if I take some panty hoses and fill it with cotton balls and some lead weights tie it to a drop marker when I find the fish and pour a mix of of the power bait and bate mate it tends to help my catch by holding the fish and increasing the bite .

I use the BANG Garlic caned spray in our last tourney and we caught a lot of fish. Now to say that it works better than "NOT" using it....hmmm I would say my lure color had most to do with it as I had a package of plastics that I sprayed in with the baits and I had a package of the same plastic that I didn't spray.... Result I caught fish on both and really never noticed a difference, I might add that the spray was clear on the first one you showed I have used it with good results by only using the dye on the flippers or tails of the plastic sparingly which did catch more fish but again conditions conditions conditions is key.

I had really good luck with it on many tourneys however a little goes a long way.
