Stabbing car bonnets tends to take the edge off a knife pretty quickly anyway so it’s probably not going to be an issue for most cold steel users tbh.

Great job , i completely agree with you , I have had a Ka-Bar Tanto (1095 Cro-van) for several years and had noticed this phenomenon. I drilled out the rivets on the sheath to take it apart and made soft wood welts and a corresponding spacer in the sheath, then reassembled it with Chicago screws. It still works the same, locks in nicely but without the apex dragging over that glass reinforced plastic the edge lasts forever. I feel that the dulling action got worse with time , perhaps the blade cuts down to more and more fibers with time.

Leather can have debris stuck in it. meaning if you dont wipe the blade and you put it back into the sheath, there is a chance that it will embed sand, dirt or other debri that your cutting into the leather and potentially cause scratches. with that said, its really not a big deal. just something to know and learn from when using yours, or any sheath.

This applies to all hard plastic sheaths I would think. Assuming its a single edge knife, I'm usually careful to "ride the spine" with drawing and sheathing a knife...especially if it's a hard plastic sheath. While I'm sure this doesn't prevent the issue completely, it definitely is better than being sloppy. Also a factor to think about would be people who like to put a steep angle on their blade to be super razor sharp...those edges are more fragile and suffer from sloppy drawing and sheathing.

Your tests are backed by real world use. I used to have a cold steel OSI. , and I swear the first inch closest to the handle looked like it had been pulled through a carbide sharpener. I don’t know what the deal was with that knife, but after every time I’d sharpen the damned blade a couple of times in and out the sheath left you with a dull edge. Thanks again Pete

I recently had the same issue with my Leatherneck SF from Cold Steel. I sharpened it to razor sharpness, but already after some minor use it started to get dull...... especially on the spot near the tip, which has the most contact while drawing.....

It also applies to Benchmade. I have a fixed blade contego and the sheath it came with (black plastic stuff) does the same thing. The plastic DESTROYS the edge QUICKLY. I can cut stuff with the knife all day, it keeps a good edge... But, just a few careless inserts and it has a visibly damaged edge, no microscope needed. After about 25 woodland outings, I can make the following claim. About every 15 inserts and removals of the fixed bladed contego is about equal to a full blown rope cut tests needing touched up to keep cutting. I will make a leather case some day. My Nyala has the amazing leather sheath it came with. After many may many inserts and removal, it keeps a super fine edge. For function, not cool bro points, leather seems to be the way to go. I suppose it's the glass in the plastic, because no amount of 2 liter soda bottles can do what my contego sheath does so quickly. If a kydex or plastic case is make correct and prevents ANY and ALL contact, then it should not matter.

The reason why the sheath dulls the knife is because it has glass beads mixed in the plastic to increase abrasion resistance.

It's definitely the glass component in Secure-ex/FRN/Zytel that causes dulling. Kydex doesn't have glass in it, and that's why it's a lot gentler on edges. When I get a factory sheath made of any kind of polymer, I use a knife to cut away any rough seams or excess bulky attachment points that I won't be using, before going over it with sandpaper to get a smooth surface finish. Carving through zytel just dulls a blade IMMEDIATELY on the first cut. Cutting through kydex is just like cutting through any other soft plastic material.

After I was informed by a viewer that this does happen I made it a habit to make sure I push my knife towards the spine before pulling it out of a secureex/kydex sheath. It doesn`t fully stop it, but certainly does help a bit. Honestly after finding this out I am much less of a fan of plastic sheaths.

Thats why you need to use sheath properly. Put it in there edge up, putting pressure on the spine side. This way you make sure edge doesnt touch the sheath

i tested this myself with a reprofiled edge, the factory edge is quite steep imo. i went from hair popping to not being able to slice paper after a few light strokes drawing the edge along the sheath matereal. I do believe this is due to the fiberglass content of the sheath,as ive done the same test on my esee sheaths which are also injection moulded and did not have the same results.

I use SK5 steel on my Hultafors knives and find it a very soft, very easy to sharpen and very strong steel but...it does need constant attention (sharpening practice). That said, if you extract your knife a hundred times, you've probably used it a hundred times, so the blade will definitely be in need of a touch up or ten regardless of blade wear on the sheath. I find the same thing is happening on my fallknivens. No big deal.

Every form fitting plastic sheath I've ever owned went straight to the garbage. "Cordura" sheaths that are just a hollow tube and don't follow the curvature of the edge are fine because they don't trap sand along the entire length of the space where the edge sits while the knife is sheathed. Oh you'd think it should be easy, it should be no problem keeping your sheath clean, but even if you get away with it for a few weeks, one day you will draw your knife and look on in horror at the once pristine edge now rolled totally sideways along 2/3 of the entire length of the blade.
@budthecyborg4575
@budthecyborg4575 4 жыл бұрын
I should make one clarification. In my opinion, for a sheath to hold the edge against a flat surface is better than a Kydex sheath. As long as there's enough space for a quick rinse to get rid of most of the grit it's probably fine. Kydex likes to actually trap the grit and in my opinion is the hardest to clean, a full disassembly of the sheath is almost necessary if you want to be sure. Ideally what you want is a large open space around the edge. Leather sheaths are mostly fine because even if your sheath is full of sand, as you draw the knife if it does press onto the sheath it can actually cut into the leather a small amount and while you might still get some dulling the grit mostly moves out of the way. Kydex on the other hand will catastrophically DESTROY your edge.

@DanDannyDanielleBob
@DanDannyDanielleBob 2 жыл бұрын
Experiment demands repetition. It stands to reason that you are essentially breaking in the sheath, and so the first 100 draws has the edge fighting the plastic, but after more use you are removing some plastic in the draw and resharpening the edge, reducing its profile and thereby carving out clearance inside the sheath, theoretically reducing the dulling effect over time. The long term question is if the sheath loosens up and becomes less usable as a result of the increased clearance, i.e. does the sheath rely on blade contact in order to provide the hold? My sk5 seems to have a lot of contact around the guard and spine. I suspect i will get a new knife long before this question is answered.

Yup, that chimes with my experience of all hard plastic sheaths which include glass fibre in their composition - thanks for doing the donkey work to provide some hard evidence! And honestly, it makes sense - if cutting onto a glass chopping board dulls your edge, why wouldn't pulling your knife out of a sheath made of glass fibre do the same thing? (And glass chopping boards should be banned IMHO, they make as much sense as a chocolate teapot!) I realise these sheaths look all tough and tactical, but I've pretty much concluded that they are more trouble than they're worth, unless maybe if you get a pricy custom-made sheath which is constructed to avoid rubbing on the cutting edge. Or couldn't manufacturers put a leather fillet into the seam where the edge is going to rub?

thank goodness someone finally addressed this. I have seen noticeable edge degradation from sheaths (kydex, boltaron, grivex, etc) over the years. I do think that if you are an edge nerd who puts a premium on a fine edge, you will notice a difference after a couple of draws. If you don't care, than you don't care. but as someone who does care, I have personally switched over to leather for all my fancy edged fixed blades. silent draw too. thanks again

What they should do is add a small channel where the two parts meet that has a concave shape. That way the sides of the bevel would be making contact instead of the edge.

I make knives and sheaths in two materials, leather or ballistic nylon with brass rivets. I noticed a long time ago that Kydex could scratch a knife's finish and I hand finish my knives, not too crazy about a sheath that can scratch the finish. So I never used Kydex.

This issue is much more notable on thinner profiles. I have a CS push knife, which has a triangle profile. I can give it a good sharpen, but the moment I return it or pull it from the sheath, the edge is rolled over.

No question it dulls the knife, and it doesn't take me a hundred times. I can put a fresh edge on the blade, sheath it two or three times, and see rolled places on the edge. Maybe as you sharpen over time the effect diminishes but it's annoying to go to the trouble of sharpening and have the sheath working against you. It's not a devastating blow to my entire world; I don't mind touching up the edge before use, but if people are wondering I thought I'd add my widow's mite of evidence.

I wrote them a email some time ago about this issue. They take care of that :-) At least thats what they told me. Thats really saddens my heart, because from the functional standpoint, this are really top notch sheaths. but i throw them instandly in the garbage, not even put the knife in, because the sheaths dull the edge, i can see that with my eyes, don´t need a microscope for that! basicly its nylon with glassfibers in it to thoughen the material, just leave that damn glass fibers out! Esee does their sheaths in pure nylon and it does not dull the edge one single bit.

I'm glad you put to rest some of the absurd claims I have seen on other KZbin channels and in print on this topic. Great experiment! But the way I see it, every time I draw that knife I'm going to use it for something, which will contribute to wearing down the edge. I don't see the sheath contact as enough of a problem to steer me away from secure ex, especially when you consider the retention and the modular nature of them as positive factors. Plus, everyone should have their work sharp field sharpener in their gear, right? RIGHT????

LOL at the song at the end! I noticed similar things with the sheath of my Pendleton Mini Hunter. This bothers me a lot and I think I won't get any Cold Steel fixed blades anymore because of this, at least none budget where I would not want to upgrade the sheath. As far as the comparison to Kydex and other hard plastic sheath options: Secure Ex is Glass fibre reinforced to my knowledge and this causes it to be a lot more abrasive that other materials. So while the design of the sheath (how much the blade has contact with the edge while drawing) plays a big part, I still think the material itself has an influence as well. At least I did not notice this effect on any other plastic sheath. I think virtuovice did a test on this a while ago as well.

I recently bought the same model and I have the exact same phenomenon. Perhaps the embarrassment must lurk before being able to exit and return his SRK without blunting the blade always a little more. Or sharpening the knife will cause the blade to lose a little height and then the edge will be far enough away to be well protected. Anyway, I just find it absurd that a renowned brand like Cold Steel has missed out on something as important as that... I even want to write to them about it. Thank you for your reviews, they are always great.

This was the video I was looking for. If you have drawn your blade x 100 and used it then it is going to need sharpening again anyway. Sk5 as mentioned is not the toughest version of that blade ... my Japanese san mai III version would go a lot longer and finally, all it needed was a strop to bring it back! I have always lent toward the spin when drawing from Securex ... so the complete opposite of what you intentionally did not do in this video. I do that for obvious reasons. I think Llyn put out a great product (up until 2020) at a good price point and I was tired of the internet bagging on Securex as if after 3 draws you are left with a butter knife. I have a *LOT* of blades but by far the biggest representation in my collection is by Cold Steel. I have x 4 recon-tanto blades and an old-school master tanto (from the 90s in the leather sheath) before we even get onto the rest of the list ...

Maybe the knife companies can tweak their future plastic sheath designs to eliminate the rubbing effects....

In my experience the securex dulls the knife very fast. If a knife edge hits the inside of the sheath with any force it dulls the blade very quickly. It anoys me alot. Why not just use another material for the sheath? One that doesnt dull your knife. Ps. Great outro! 😂

Do Leather sheaths strop a knife and make it sharper?
@berniem.6965
@berniem.6965 4 жыл бұрын
Sure. That's why I make my sheaths out of Japanese water stones. You have to soak the whole thing for 10 minutes but if you then draw the knife it comes out razor sharp with a mirror edge. My next project will be turning a Tormek T8 into an inbelt sheath for concealed tactical use.

I have several Cold Steel fixed blades and they all seem to dull a little from the secure ex sheath. Some more than others depending on how tight they fit. I have a master hunter in 3v that is so tight in the sheath it makes a ridiculous amount of contact on the edge when drawing the knife out or putting it back in. No matter how careful you are. It's bad enough that even in 3v it looses it's edge rather fast. Enough to where it's quite noticeable. I sent it back thinking it might of been a faulty sheath that was overly tight but the next one had the same issue. It sucks because I do like this knife but now I have to spend more money on a new sheath. Too many production knife company's fall short when it comes to sheaths in my opinion. I'd rather pay a little extra and get a quality sheath from the start rather than having to go out and get a quality sheath elsewhere.

I wish they changed the mold for their sheaths slightly so that there is a small channel that contacts along the sides of the edge rather than directly on the edge. I'm thinking about trying to modify it myself, though I'm not sure how I will get it apart and put it back together.

I've not had much of a problem with Cold Steel's Secure-Ex sheaths. However, COMMA, the plastic sheath on my Kabar BK-14 used to dull le crap out of the knife in a very short time.

Leather is the best sheath. When you have to do alot of cutting from time to time you'll have to hone the knife.

For high quality sheaths......... hmm... Think of it as a sandwich, the ham is aways free-floating! Even if just a little bit, whilst the middle is, nicely, glued in place ... The blade doesn't touch the sheathe at all! *Unless it's a cheap one, made from stuff such as: tin, contaminated aluminium or copper, bronze... Any cheap metal that they can make pegs out of... Even the super soft metals, like... Gallium! Can damage the blade, doe to metals's tendency to, over time, form hard crystals that can easily end up scrubbing the edge. Here in BRASIL ... it's common to have pegs holding both sides of hard molded material. there are sheathes with pegs that "touch the blade", but it's mostly sturdy, plasticky, leather nobs! They are very tough, and compacted, as they are hammered in place; but also very malleable, and fibrous. The workmen tend to expect the friction to clean, edge-barbs, but I don't have one of those, so I can't confirm. Just a fun fact from the foreign elders 🇧🇷

The issue has an easy solution: put angled sharpening: stones, diamond dust, ceramic , etc on either side of the blade. Or include an external sharpening rod, ceramiic etc.So for example, on my issued USAF survival knife had a small sharpening stone in a leather pocket.

I've never had a problem with my CS sheaths. It isn't going to matter what kind of material the sheath is made out of there will be some deterioration of the edge.

I have cold steel Karambit with secure ex sheath, now the dulling of that is ridiculous. But the sheath on the We 607 does not dull the knife at all. Local eateries use serrated knives because edge contact with plate is minimized and edge stays sharper (usable) for longer. I poorly emulate this effect by adding low grit edges to knives with problematic sheathes. Like my Karambits, really don't want to be resharpening those all too often.

nice. i have noticed this with my falkniven. The company says it wont however. The leather sheath is much heavier however... guess its a tradeoff.

Any FRN sheath will dull the knife if the edge gets run along the inside. With most of my Cold Steel fixed blades (admittedly none in any "super steels") I notice that a single rough draw (usually when another person unsheaths the knife- I am able to avoid the issue by pushing the spine against the sheath as I draw) immediately causes dulling and usually loss of shaving sharpness. The dulling to the edge where it made contact is visible under light. This is part of why I have avoided any double edge knives in FRN sheaths as the back edge will not remain sharp for long due to this effect.

I had a similar issue with the Gerber Ghost Strike. Every time you draw it from the sheath the blade makes contact with the retention spacers and dulls the crap out of the blade.
