Matt hit the nail on the head that people don't understand how torque affects the final product. They don't understand torque at all. And I've noticed in my journey for more knowledge that a lot of people just don't talk about it enough. Thank God for this channel though!! 🙌🏾 exactly why I revisted a 2 year old video. Replay value is a great sign of quality substance!! As always amazing from the boys at TXG!!

Revisited this video...... So many of my pupils suffer with poor shaft selections.... Weight, flex or even length. It's clear when the player has a shaft that suits, their shots are supreme.... We need this knowledge!!

I had the same experience during a recent iron fitting. I've always played graphite, but thought my clubs current clubs were too heavy to get good swing speed, so during the fitting, I tried everything from lightweight graphite to steel. I was all over the place with the lighter shafts, but with the 105g steel shaft, everything, but the worst mis-hits clustered nicely. I was shocked! It forced a better tempo and distance was better, on average, than the graphite. It was really eye-opening and suggest a fitting across the range or weights for anybody having problems with consistency.

Very interesting guys. I have been battling a slice on my driver for a few years. I did a demo with a heavier shaft and it seemed no matter what I did, I couldn’t make myself slice the ball. I wish someone would’ve told me that going from a 55 gram stiff to a 65 gram stiff would almost immediately fix my slice. I give up so many strokes off the tee.

Yeah, I saw a robot take the same swing path, regular flex shaft, and increase the speed from 90 mph to 105. The face twisted at impact and caused a push fade. Matt is a consistent swinger, and when he says it felt like the face twisted with the lighter shaft I believe him.

Maybe best video ever and concludes exactly what I personally always have experienced. Most recent example is the new Titleist TS3. Was in Golftown and the only shafts they had currently for their test heads was the 55 gram Tensei Blue at 45" in Stiff and a 44.5" Evenflow ProjectX Extra Stiff 65 gram. There was basically no setup that I could do with the 55 gram Tensei to keep it from over drawing - also got the the occasional slice. In 30-40 drives trying everything, ended up with Surefit set to Fade and club lie Flat just to attempt to control to reduce the hook and make it into a Draw. I did hit my 2 longest drives when I hit it High and Straight but it was IMPOSSIBLE to time. I switched to the Evenflow 65G and it instantly fixed everything - I did leave the Surefit at Fade but all of a sudden all my drives looked exactly like my Taylormade M2 2016 with a HZDUS Black 6.5 62gram shaft playing 44.75" - but hysterically I couldn't hit it longer than my 258-265 carry. Let me know when you have the TS3 in with a shaft choices as I would love to come it. Awesome stuff. Paul

And that Tensei AV Series Blue 55 gram is designed with 'Straight Flight Weighting to reduce Fade Flight' (all their words for the Titleist website). I wonder if this was what I was feeling with the club. If I hit it with my normal swing it immediately started over drawing. If I tried to slightly leave it a tiny bit open I 'could' get the big slice. The one real positive thing about that TS3 head was a sort of perfectly repeatable spin number for me of 2100-2300 whereas the TS2 seemed to be 300+ rpms higher at equivalent lofts - it may need to be hit at a lower loft all things equal.

Have a 75 g Rflex on my 3 w and 55 g stiff flex on my driver. Must use very different swing tempo on them to make them work. They have about the same carry... I will get a new driver shaft more like my 3w. I have tried a high tourque driver and the head did twist open before impact due to acceleration and club head mass not catching up with the shaft. That shaft felt like a fishing rod... I can't really se a benefits in high tourque shaft other then price.

This is fabulous information. Too often we look at averages or the best shots. On the golf course consistency and limiting the poor shots is by far more important than what happens with the just the very best shots. This can easily be ignored in many fittings.

I had a fitting at titleist st ives a few year ago now and after a few hits with certain shafts he put the v2 shaft in and I said I can’t hit that because I have tried it before in my friends driver who happened to be with me. The fitter said please try it and it went really well same head as my friends but his shaft was 76grm and the one he gave me was 65grm .so totally agree with this video.

Interesting video again Guys, went for a TS driver fitting yesterday ,the Smoke 6.5 shaft came out he best ,but nothing beat my B series 60 x Diamana when that was put in a TS2 9.5 head ,the numbers were great all over with straighter shots and I felt right at home straight away .No matter how hard I tried with the Even flow stiff ,it went high with a strong fade and just wouldn't work ,the Kuro Cage was not working either .TS2 worked really well for me and was longer by some way than my 917 ,TS 3 gave the worst numbers ,I couldn't get on with that head .Find you're soul mate with a good shaft ,I just don't see the point in blowing hard earned cash on a driver with any old shaft .Anyone that says shafts don't matter should not be fitting clubs for golfers .

Recently picked up a strong 3 wood 12.5deg, went with an Accra 80g M5 shaft, it feels heavy and hard to load, like I really have to swing to get good distance from it, however its probably the most consistent club I've hit off the tee. Still getting 260-270 yrds out of decent hits depending on how hard I hit, but finding fairways is the key and why I dont want to change anything up.

is a 60g Stiff too much for a 105mph driver swing speed? I was originally playing a 48g regular and would lose the ball to the right or pull it, mostly my swing but on a good one the ball would go nowhere.

My swing is about 106-111 and I play a 78 gram X-Stiff. Heavier stiff shafts seem to introduce the occasional slice and the x-stiff seems to have a draw bias, which is what I would rather have right now.

Guys, you also have to apply ego as a factor. You know us men, we all have an ambition to try and flex and go heavy on weight and flex and shaft brand. We are all guilty of chasing perception of strength and distance and not true game. Completely guilty of that when I started playing and payed a heavy price because I ingrained such bad habits and hadn't a clue what I was doing. I denied myself an honest true fitting and an honest view of my game. When I set all that aside, I started to improve due to honesty and perspective. I would love to volunteer as a tester so where can I send a vid of my swing?? Enjoy the vids as always gentleman.

Recently went for a fitting in Tour Spec Golf in NYC and ended up with a driver that cost USD1,000 (Callaway Epic Flash with Tensei White CK (S) shaft). The fitting was done indoors so I couldn't really see ball flight (apex, etc) - but the results there were great. When I got home though, i found I COULD NOT hit this driver AT ALL. Nowhere near what the launch monitor was giving me. My dispersion was all over the place and when I compared it to my old shaft (CRAZY SR) the Tensei shaft felt really stiff. I've seen some videos where the X and S flexes were compared and there wasn't really much of a difference. So I assume the S and SR wouldn't matter as much also. Is this video saying that all the difference is the way i FEEL when I swing the new driver vs my old driver? And if I end up getting used to the NEW driver, it will perform the way it was performing during the fitting?

Was the swing weight of the driver influenced by the change in shaft weight, or did you adjust the head weight to match swing weights? I imagine swing weight changes could also be the reason for Matt's lack of consistency?

Great video. I am curious if the swing variations should be attributed to the total weight of the club or to the variations in swing weight. I don't see this discussed much any more. What is the new sweet spot you try to find so all the clubs swing the same?
@ESikora12
@ESikora12 6 жыл бұрын
CPM being the same across the weights lends itself to possibly a redistribution of materials to allow for things to line up between weights, as you mentioned. Does a shaft droop factor come into play at all when you’re looking at the lighter weight vs the heavier one? Bend profile on the swing path is what gets considered most of the time, but was a possible variation in how that lightest shaft is dropping maybe contributing to more toe strikes and a fade shot shape for you? Or is that droop factored into the equation already? Great work, as always!

Great subject TXG. I can't tell you how many times I have tried to switch into a lighter shaft as to swing faster and the results are quite different than expected. I swing much faster with heavier shafts and much more consistent. In irons, if it is not an DG X100 i absolutely can not hit it. Don't know why but that is the only shaft that works for me. It is so funny to me when i go to a store and the fitter puts together an irons with a DG 120 or 105. or a KBS 120. I hit a few and they right away think , wow this guy can not hit the side of a barn. Then i ask for the X100 and things fall into place just fine. Is there another shaft or graphite shaft that will give me that X100 feel and weight?? i would love to see if there is something else that will perform better for me.

Funny how this vdeo just popped up! Currently having problems... G400SFT 10° with Alta stiff 55g shaft - ball flight too high, direction reasonably controlable when swinging well with confidence but not much distance. Swapped to the silver 65g tour version which is a fraction shorter in length (maybe a half inch). Lower ball flight, but feels too much hard work to control direction which I'm giving up on. Another great video guys. I was talking to my club builder about torque... He mentioned that there wasn't a standard measurement on torque or flex, though. He said that every manufacturer has a different way of measuring these things. There might be 2.8* of torque in 2 different brands of shafts... But 2 different forces imparted on the 2. What do you guys think?

Usually, the further back the COG is - the more spin, and also higher MOI. That's why on clubs like Ping LST and Callaway Sub-zero heads have more weight towards the front to get that reduction in spin.

I went back to review this video (great job as always) as I've selected the UST Recoil ES Smacwrap iron shafts ( I"m 64 and my hands hurt when I play consecutive days and I can no longer practice and play back to back either). My question is the F3 Regular shaft comes with two weight and torque options ..... F3 760 is 70g with 4.1 and the F3 780 is 83g 3.6 torque. my current ping i E1 set has XP R300 TT 's, which are 95g and 2.1. While the 760's feel good and perform pretty well .... I feel like the weight and torque of the 780's would closer match my current set and swing profile. My swing miss is to rush / swing too fast and come over the top. Any thoughts as I haven't been able to swing test the 780's. Also, any thoughts about soft stepping the 78's 1x .... just for feel.

While TQ difference between shafts may not matter when a ball is hit off center because the 4/1000ths of a second of impact isn't long enough to influence ball flight (I would actually doubt this claim to be true when extreme off center hits happen) but TQ differences do play a massive factor in controlling the face coming into impact during the downswing - and thus do play a massive factor of control the club's face angle. By own experience substituting a 60 gram high torque shaft with a 60 gram extremely low torque shaft made my driver go from nearly uncontrollable to completely predictable. It is statistically impossible to attribute Matt's performance to weight differences and not torque differences as they were NOT independently tested and controlled. The effect may in fact have been all Torque and not Weight - or a combo of each - or all weight - there is no way to attribute the relevance of weight or TQ without controlling for them. My personal guess is that it was mostly all torque difference and not weight.

Love the videos, I don't think there is one I haven't watched twice. Question for you if I may please. I was fitted for some irons around 2 years ago and you too a significant change in swing speed I ended up getting new shaft fitted to the same heads. For some reason now it really feels like the tow points up at impact compared to before. My question is do different flex shaft demand different lie angles or would it be more the pilot swinging different because of the different shaft.

Different shafts will droop more than others dynamically, so they may deliver the clubhead more toe down or toe up depending on that profile.

I've been looking at new graphite shafts for my irons. Like Matt hits best with the 465 in the test and it turns out that's similar to what he hits in his gamer driver. If I was fitted with a shaft at a certain weight, torque, and flex profiles, should I expect similar results from other shafts at that weight, torque, and flex profile? Or is there enough variability between manufacturers and construction to make huge differences? Good stuff in the video. Keep it coming.

Obviously the 55g is no good but do you think over time if you persevered with it you would get used to it and possibly be something you could use... and perhaps increase distance (not that you need it) due to the lighter shaft.... I'm guessing you have never used a shaft that light for any period of time so not a surprise you couldn't get a feel for it.

Great video, really stimulating to deep dive into how a consumer can see so much variation testing in a box store. Different shaft profiles and weights in the same flex w a "fitter" comparing "apples to apples" but the shafts weights varying strike and delivery--then different heads for differing flights. Do these concepts apply to irons? A player having a preferred weight in driver - does it correlate to irons when shaft length is considered? Or does the swingweight differences create too big a difference? Would it be overall a preferred swingweight for consistent delivery and speed? 🤔

Good vid! Question though. I purchased a Fujikura pro tour spec 2.0 7-X and it came with a tour velvet grip. I played it as is for 3 months, but it was super "boardy" I didn't feel like I could load it. I usually have a penetrating draw flight, but couldn't draw a ball to save my life. I added around 8-10 grams of lead tape just behind the speed channel and increased the rear weight in my 915 D2 to 17g. Still couldn't get a draw, but there was less fade. Finally I ripped off the tour velvet and replaced with golf pride tour wrap, also added 2 extra layers of tape and a 3rd layer on bottom half. Now I can hit that penetrating draw again. So does the grip affect the ability to load and the torque? Or was it just a combo of all my "mad science" tinkering? And can you have Matt test the Fujikura pro tour spec? Please!!! Thanks guys, keep up the good work. Oh yeah...I bought the shaft based on weight and torque rating.

I've tested 2 different shafts with 2 different clubs in the last 2 years and as we go through the shafts, both fittings we came to one where I felt that was it. Just so happens both were almost exactly the same weight. Question then, if two shafts are the same weight, on the same head, one shaft is counterbalanced, will it feel different?
@clubchampionmedia
@clubchampionmedia 6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, counter balanced shafts have that same weight in the shaft distributed differently so the balance will feel different to you

I assume you were adjusting the swing weight as you changed the shaft weight?

So, because I'm still learning (thanks to this channel!) some of this stuff can be a bit hard to digest/retain on first watch - is the gist of this video that as long as you find your weight area it's more of a feel thing? I know Matt had a ton of misses when he went too light, but at 65 and 75 his performance really leveled out. Could you have fit him into either at that point? Was it based on feel? Again, sorry if I'm not recalling you speaking to that exact point. Just a lot of info to take in :) Thanks again for doing what you do, guys! We all appreciate it greatly - I feel like I'm in golf fitting college and I couldn't be happier.

Yup absolutely Rob, there's a sweet spot for everyone and depending on the player they may actually get similar performance on one end of the weight scale of the other when trying relatively close weights. Some players will be more sensitive to that 10g difference, but for others just having between 65-75 works well. Important to note that over the course of a whole season worth of drives the disparity might be larger than we've illustrated here.

Hi Ian, question for you, I have a set of Mizuno JPX 900 Forged irons, was fitting with 60g LZ shafts. Swing speed approx 70mph, 6 iron. I bought a Mizuno JPX 900 tour with a LZ 115g shaft, 8 iron out of the demo barrel for comparison. I hit the forged slightly further but the tour seems to have less dispersion left to right. Both 8 irons. Does this make sense to you? Is the what you would expect?

increase of shaft weight, up to a certain extent, will always make you have better control and dispersion

A question. I noticed that you sont really mention much swingweight. Is this not relevant or as relevant anymore. Some fitters seem to emphasize swingweight over other things??

Sorry Guys, I have been taking my stupidity Pills again. Can I just clarify, torque in a shaft equals twist? So a low torque shaft will twist less than a high torque shaft? Or is it the other way round?? I get so confused, just when I think I have Flex and Weight in the shaft sorted. you hit me with torque.

TXG Tour Experience Golf understand that you guys mentioned that you’ll be covering more on this with GEARS etc. Just wanted to clarify if I understood correctly, you also referred to torque as more to help with “feel” (in the example of Matt’s 1st/early fitting in the KuroKage) then it actually has to do with effecting the “twisting” of club face at impact (assuming that means whatever twisting that happens, happens before delivery to impact). Does this mean that more torque doesn’t necessarily mean more “closing” of the club face at impact/delivery to impact?

Torque is a measurement of how much the shaft moves on the twisting axis, not necessarily in one direction or the other. Also the club contacts the ball for too brief a time for torque to have an affect on mishit shots when the clubhead twists - it's more related to helping a player with their timing and delivery to impact.

Hey great video! Peter Finch (tour player with a ton of subs) did a video recently where he tried some shafts in his driver. I mentioned you should do a collab and he liked my comment. I think your insights into the club fitting process would be cool to see. Especially since I assume you can do it via skype or something. Good luck, and keep up the great content.

Why are you testing all these clubs, shafts, etc. with someone who carries his driver over 300 yards? 99% of all golfers have trouble hitting drivers 200 yards+. Nothing against the guy, but all these tests are meaningless to the average golfer. How about offering something for the average player in the way of helpful information? I'm sure the one percent who carry 300 are eating this all up..I'll bet the majority are not.......

I don't think the testing would be worth it with a regular player like the rest of us because it would introduce all sorts of user error variables that we all encounter from swing to swing... Matt's almost swing robot like consistency makes the testing data more reliable and we can learn what it is they are trying to get across faster The speed and distance is irrelevant when it comes to what you can learn from these sessions... In this one - I realized I am using pretty heavy shafts (Orochi Graphite Regular) even though they feel a LOT lighter than a starter set we have - seeing this just saved me $ because I won't bother to look for heavier shafts for my 4i & 5i replacements

Not at all. When I started watching I knew very little about fitting and had been 'fitted' by a very reputable place in Walnut Creek, CA and then a guy down in Scottsdale area. Both were good, but not at this level. After watching these guys for the past 6 months or so and through their 'tests', etc, I have been able to drop my handicap from an 18 to an 11. Granted, I have worked on my swing and play, but understanding some of the things they do here helps me deliver the club to impact better and more consistent. And they have don't fittings with regular handicaps guys like us and higher handicaps. Very informative.
