My guess is the big difference from the Chosen Axemen test comes down to their armour piercing stat. They get +3 in armour while Chosen Swordmans +3 is halved due to their enemies AP attack

I think you can see the same kinda thing with the AP pilla of the cohorts which cause more casualties when upgraded

Probably should have used the Alt Attack on the Praetorian Cavalry to see if there would be any meaningful difference there, but it seems we can rule out any significant changes here.

there is something wrong in your conclusion. (which you had no way to know, its fine, just letting you know for the future) A weapon / armour upgrade actually gives a +2 bonus to the respective stat, not +1. The game interface tells you it is +1 but in the code its actually +2. This has been confirmed by people at Feral who worked on the remaster. So the chosen axemen actually went from 0 to 6 armour, which is an even larger difference, though in melee it would make much less difference than when being shot by missiles. This also means a unit can have +15 attack and defense if their xp and upgrades are at the max, which makes it super OP. A peasant unit can have 16/16, and an urban cohort can have 33 missile attack, 29 melee attack, and 39 defense...

@07jaworski07 i think its simply an oversight from the developpers. The xp bonuses accurately reflect the game code (+1 attack and defense). It seems they simply forgot to make it +2, 4 and 6 for the other ones

Thanks for the comment. I agree that Weapon and Amour upgrades are better than XP. However, at the same time, it seems that they give only +1. The take away from this is that in almost every case the ups side had more casualties. Take away being that weapon ups are overall more valuable?

@bobjackson4287 yes, weapons give more benefit than armor. But that's because armor offers less protection per point than shield or def skill do (ain't 100%) which i tested a little bit to just notice. But hey armor works from all angles right and not just from the front and left or whatever.
