A very interesting question and some interesting perspectives and responses. I think their responses are very much on point for Thailand to continue to develop, particularly social welfare, public transport etc. In my humble opinion Thailand has so many opportunities for the future. As a significant manufacturer in both textiles and stainless steel products, two industries that I personally know about, there are no doubt many more, Thailand has an enviable infrastructure and skilled workforce. The UK by comparison, and we have been debating this for a long time, is so much less of a manufacturer than it once used to be, and not for the better. I think the business opportunities in Thailand are exceptional (outside of tourism), with the right knowledge and idea, particularly in the area of ecommerce, being able to leverage the economical differences between Thailand and other countries in the west for example.

I want to add another point. There was a common theme from most of the people responding - Government should/must DO something. It's up to Government to make things better. After 65yrs I've learned and seen that government is typically the problem and not the solution. Government is number one bent on helping and supporting itself (the system), and if it can provide some sounds good feels good solutions to the public in the process, that simply helps Government look good and preach why it is so necessary and important. The western world is beginning to wake up to these facts, I sincerely hope Thais learn quicker.

Very interesting to hear what Thais think. Wealth inequality is massive, but fortunes are built off cheap labour, so the struggles betwen the classes will be hard to overcome. Also Thailands rough edges are also what make it interestig so as it becomes a more normal modern Asian city, will it lose its charm.

_"Also Thailands rough edges are also what make it interestig so as it becomes a more normal modern Asian city, will it lose its charm."_ Yep, that's the ironic consequence of having your nation becoming richer, you become boring. Most people in poorer countries think we in more developed nations are so much happier, but it couldn't be further from the truth.

Many of the issues raised apply in most other countries as well, my Thai gf says " I dont care whose in power as long as they do good things for Thailand " I feel the fiasco of the Move Forward party outcome at the last election will make many Thais realise that government is the problem and not the solution ?

When comparing nations and how they develop over the last 25 years in my life time. I see that nations with a hands on economy have growth for the majority of people. Germany had its time in 60 to early 80's without the need for a degree. After that a degree helped to get to the late 90-2000's After that mass degrees became devaluated and nothing special appart from a clean perception. Australia had its time from the early 2000 to 2015 were a degree was a waste of time and money. Shortly after, degrees had a push, but are now getting commoditized paper certs and incomes are curbing and stagnate below inflation and huge influx through immigration. The medium and long term winners are the people with a business with no to average education, an inheritance and good connections. Steady growth. They are always earning and adjusting fast. Higher education or employee careers do work if there is an industrial base and cheap quality labor. I'm surprised how the Thai responses here are very western like and the focus and trust on the government. Thailand lost its cheap and affordable status a while back and I think, that it is not a good sign or a basis for university degrees in the near future. You will not get your money back. Its a stalemate and a dangerous wait for governmental intervention, almost like a western democracy. All western governments have blown out of proportion, and all of them opened the borders wide open, which happened 2 times in my life time, and very very very unfair to the local born citizen. I can see useless and expensive western mistakes are being baked into Thailands future.

i'm sympathetic to the Thai nationals, because they are willing to offer everything for cheap, and i'm hoping other countries will stop taking advantage of them. solely owned Thai businesses seem willing to operate alongside other foreign businesses, but are forced to compete with them by keeping their prices lower. i think that any foreign business big or small in Thailand should prove and provide the majority of their opportunities to Thai people, not their own nationalities. and if they are new market opportunities, provide training to Thai people to participate with new skills. Thailand could be a model for other countries to see how an international influx to a beautiful country can remain cheap and affordable, whether as a tourist or a migrant.

We've been suppressed for long time and will continue doing so by the looks of politics going on. By Suppressing, it's mean there's still a lot of potential an enormous one even. So hope is always there, but it has never come to light. unless, we destroy elitism from the roots and ha ha surprise! we can't.

good interview, would have like to hear from 40yr old plus people though. IMO, this urge for a bigger and better social welfare system is highly misguided and common among younger people. Next thing they'll find is that the generation that gets welfare and public assistance learns to "expect" that support from govt. They vote that way too, and oops, in 10-20yrs a socialist populace that relies on govt support has been created. And of course, govt just loves that and grows bigger, taxes the majority more and more. It's a bad whirlpool to get caught in and it eventually drags the country downward to nobody's benefit.
@stoomkracht

That's very black/white thinking going on there. It is clear that social security is very much lacking here. The gov didn't care how much small family businesses were forced closed during the crazy covid restrictions period that only achieved more damage. Lack of Education opportunities too. Old boys network and wealth severely concentrated in a few huge conglomerates who only look at money and damage a lot doing just that. They love cheap labor. It also boggles the mind that the police barely functions. Look at the traffic. Maybe you do not have a clue how many people here try to live day to day with zero support or chance for change for the better. The ones who have don't help them enough to lessen the gap. A governments job should be just that. But yeah.. humans
