I think it's better to set a occasion to do this experiment. Ask for direction etc. Better than just ask them to say something in English. It's a little bit weird on street.

Totally agree with you. Their approach was awkward. Even myself if I'm asked to "just say 'something' in English", I feel put on the spot. It's just not natural.

you should not ask the question of "do you speak english“ and ”what's your favourite phrase“, this is too direct and is not possible for usual people to understand. You can ask where is Mcdonald, where is the bus station or where is the restroom.

+Chi-wai Lee I watched this video before and today I just watched it again and also I read all the comments below, and as a normal Chinese guy I’d also like to say sth. First, about my English level, I can say it’s close to native speakers, especially my speaking ( I am just telling the truth, not boasting or just wanna show off) and in a certain way, I love to learn English. But today I am not gonna talk too much about me, I am gonna talk about most English learners here in China. First, let’s talk about my hometown which is just a small county in Henan province, like many third tier cities or regions here in China, the teachers there are just teaching the students how to pass the test, they don’t give a damn about speaking. There are lots of reasons behind it which I am reluctant to talk about, but the main reason is that the teachers they themselves( at least 80% of them) can’t speak English well, this can be only blamed on the so called ”dumb and mute” English education in China. Even if there’s one or some students who wants to practice speaking, it will be really hard for him or her to find a place or person to practice or practice with. Sometimes, even if she or he wants to practice or practicing by her/himself, they will be treated like a weirdo in some people’s eyes, they may laugh at the students who wants to improve, and say sth like” what? You wanna go to America to study? Dream on that.” Stuff like that. I am currently working in Shanghai, and I have met many friends in different companies, many of them can speak English, from just ok to great. And from them, I learned some of their ideas about English learning: A Shanghainess guy who speaks broken English told me that, he has to learn English because his company often do business with other countries, especially with America. For him, learn English is kinda like a torture, he said to me his purpose to learn English is just for money, he mentioned that many corrupt officials can immigrate to other countries even if they don’t know any English, but they have money, so the western countries still welcome them.:))) . He thinks that there is no need for further study of English( he passed the National English Test CET band 6), because when he and his colleagues talking business with other laowais, they just use their broken English and the body language, as long as people can understand each other , then it will be fine, there is no need to improve or speak better or perfect English. In his mind, language is just a tool, just know some will be fine, there is no need to learn too much. Actually, in many companies here in Shanghai, lots of people have the same mindset like him. Even when I traveled to other places in China, I found many people at that Shanghainess guy’s age has the same mindset, and many of them all passed the national English test( CET band 6 and CET band 8 even). So my impression about Chinese people learn English is like this: 1 For the school and parents, about 90% of them only care about the grades, that’s why they wanna hire the English native speakers to teach their students, because they don’t care about speaking.(there are more reasons actually about hire native speakers) 2 For the office workers, language is just a tool, sth they need to learn and can be used in the future, and the main purpose is, well, 70% of the people I interviewed answered is money.

Not a good interview. The interviewers didn't even put any effort into the interview but rather passive. It feels to me that the the interviewers do not even want to find out how good or bad Chinese people are with English, but just to prove that Chinese people' English are ridiculous. It's so irrational to just ask people say anything they want, 'cause normal people don't usually think about what they'd like to say if they were interviewed one day. You should've ask them specific questions like what's your hobby, etc.

Man Man Man Where did you get that information from? Go anywhere and you will find someone who speaks English. You can't say the same about Chinese though. You are in fact only talking about native speakers. Chinese has about 900 million native speakers and 200 million second language speakers, which equals about 1.1 billion total speakers. English has 400 million native speakers, but 1.1 billion second language speakers, which equals a total of 1.5 billion speakers. So English in fact has more speakers.

Man Man Man Are you that stupid you can't tell that's totally wrong? English 335 million speakers? Wtf? First of all there's 320 million people in America, 65 million in Britain, 35 million in Canada, 25 million in Australia, 5 million in New Zealand, and 5 million in Ireland. Which equals 455 million speakers. That's just native speakers. A lot of people in most countries know English. I already told you, about 1.1 billion people know English as a second language. So what I said is right, there's a total of 1.5 billion speakers of English. There's even a Wikipedia page which confirms this. Try looking up 'languages by total number of speakers.'

The world studies English on “Duolingo”. English is my 1st language, I struggle speaking my 2nd language, Spanish. Around 10 years ago I learnt my first foreign language on my own, Russian. Years later I had a growing curiosity for learning languages.

it's like we Filipinos, know english, but are shy to talk it., my English listening skills was developed when I attended CCF church and all of the preaching are in pure English. then I went abroad to work in a US territory, where my english speaking was developed more. and now I do online job, and meetings are there with Clients Overseas and meetings are in English., it depends if a non-native English is always using English or not, then it could be determined if they are good in English. if one is not using it always, then he/ she could say only a little bit and shy to talk in English.

Dutch speak Dutch, but they speak excellent English, so is Swedish, Norwegian and Danish. Asian countries like Malaysia, Philippines and Indonesia, they're able to speak English well. (Those from the Capital city) Chinese speak Chinese, but didn't even speak English, even in their Capital, Beijing. WTF? they learned it at school for 9 years.

I mean, seriously, you went around and asked anyone you met that what his/ her favorite phrase was. How can i answer questions like that? It's quite confusing for anyone. By the way, great work. I'd like to watch your other videos in the next time ;) ✌️

That's sad. When some Chinese migrate to the Philippines and then establishes mini-Chinese groceries, some do speak little English and most are not (just gesture of expression). I'm not sure how they migrate here without knowing a single word. So if I speak Tagalog, am I compelled to speak Chinese if they are not compelled to speak English also?

Actually there are close to 40-50 million(but still insignificant compared to the vast total number of Chinese population) Chinese people learning English in China nowadays and that actually English education is a HUGE business in China (which generates about 15-18 billion dollars income annually) there are a few big corporations in China ( the New Oriental, for example) that made so much money by just teaching english in China that even made there way to New York Stock exchange and NASDAQ! But let's face it, learning a foreign language which is a whole other system isn't quite for everyone~
