All pickups should be solderless and come with solderless pots and switches. I don' t get why other brands still are living in the stone age of soldering, and not including pots and switches like EMG does..

I love the 81X/60X. I put them in my ESP LTD EC-1000 Vintage Black. Sustain for days. I put the Het Set in another LTD EC and enjoy their sound as well. Have the 57/66 set in a Schecter Hellraiser Hybrid. I really like the EMG family of tones. They're all superb in my opinion. Next up is the Glenn Tipton signature set. Judas Priest was my favorite band growing up. Listen to 'Grinder', you'll understand. 🙂

I wire Emg pickups at a guitar manufacture and we drill the holes out. Take it slow if you do, though so you dont rip out the brass insert. These pickups sound bad ass dude! Love your content.

There's a lot of EMG hating going on in the comments and it's not particularly constructive. The 'compressed' sound is an artifact of the reduced string pull which in turn means higher order harmonics ring longer. A trend in modern passive pickups is again for weaker magnets and reduced string pull to behave in a similar way. Where active pickups have a big advantage is the frequency response is entirely internal to the pickup, independent of cables and pedals, so it's easy to move between wireless sets and cables, you don't have to worry about buffering long cable runs or in front of a series of stomp boxes. I'm experimenting with transparent active buffers with the intention of building them into passive guitars for convenience. Otherwise it's make sure there's a buffered tuner or suchlike at the start of the signal chain, and a high quality buffer is important. I note every bass I own has passive pickups and active EQ and have been much more consistent when moving between studio and stage rigs. Perhaps the voicing of the 81 is very well known, particularly the distinct lack of a scoop in the response followed by a sharp peak at the cutoff frequency which makes for a plethora of very distinct voicings for passive pickups. However, a large component of the recorded emg into Mesa sound is the mid hump of a TubeScreamer like pedal used to tighten the bass. I've been using a Crayon for a bit more control and it's not too hard to get a similar sound with the right passive pickups.

i understand the rushed excitement to mount the pickups using whatever you can get, but those plain metal wood screws with almost stripped heads aren't ideal. Proper-sized black screws will look better and not ruin your pickup mounting holes. Once your hole is bigger, you can never go back to smaller screws.LOL

Haha yeah. The Jimmy Clip guys got sick of me using janky solutions when they had a much more elegant one. Tbh, for most guitars I don't notice a huge difference live, but when I'm listening to recorded guitar tracks back when I haven't used them, I can definitely hear it. The exception is my Strats. They're all so ringy that I can't play them without Jimmy Clips anymore!

The Chapman sounds like shit compared to the Eclipse and especially the Gibson custom and I think it has little to do with the pickups which sound pretty close to each other (except for the JH pickups which sound different). Yeah, they're more expensive but Chapman still have a long way to go and this test made me realize that.

I have a killswitch on my ml3, the luthier had to use the spot of the volume knob for the killswitch because there wasn't enough room. The volume knob is now placed about a centimeter away from the tone knob, and honestly, it's more ergonomic this way.

My favorite EMG bridge pickup is the 81. How would you compare the Bone Breaker and the Glenn Tipton EMG bridge pickup to the 81? As I'm looking for a new bridge pickup to mess around with. As with passive pickups, I'd always swap pickups around, but there really isn't any reason so far for me to go to something different than the 81. I tried the 81x, but it has reduced volume, and is more cleaner. I tried the Super 77, and it was kind of muddy compared to the 81. Thanks.

So the Bone Breaker bridge is the same exact pickup as the 81, but with a green logo? I don't get why EMG would do this is that would make those pickups kind of phony. If they at least had said this on their website, then I guess it wouldn't have been a big deal. As I'm guessing there are people with an 81 in their bridge, and then they decide to get the Bone Breaker to try out a different pickup when it turns out it's the same pickup.

I recently got the KH V and it came with bone breakers and I prefer the 81, 85, and 57, 66 over the bone breakers. The bone breakers are too dull and dim for me

BB-B and 81-B clean sounded way different (although 2 different guitars and 18V mod) but I'm far from a fan of the BB-Set. When I'm to get my hands on a pair of EMG hums it's either gonna be 57-66 or Het set or 85 for the bridge and maybe another 85 or a 60 for the neck 85 is an Alnico Medium output (PAF) humbucker and actually sounds way better than an 81 IMO.

Does the set come with toggle switches? Doesn't look like it on any pictures of the packaging or of the contents. I mean it's not crazy expensive to get a solderless toggle, but my none of my country's stores have them in stock or have never had any.

Those 60s just sound right. New signature sets sound great but nothing like the 81/60 combo for getting those classic tones.

Great vid :) .. I have a 89 , sa , sv set up as a super strat with 5 way . Where should I place the sv ? At the moment I have it in the neck and the 5 way set up so it’s activated in the middle position so it can be blended with the 89 in the bridge . Just asking for opinions ? I do love the quick connect idea of emgs no soldering :)

I get that Kirk uses the wah a lot but he doesn’t use it literally all the time, not trying to sound like an asshat I’m just saying hearing wah every time someone brings up Kirk is mildly infuriating

Very nice video! It's amazing how the very classical combo of the Eclipse with EMG81 is sounding so right on your bridge comparison, she litteraly killed all the others xD This guitar is just unbeatable...
