U r right.. they live in Thailand but say everything like negative. Believe me in USA situation is far worse than Thailand. Everything is going downside. I was there in Baltilmore, USA.. at night its really scary. And florida is same. Mg Brother in law carry firearms with him always. And a certain percentage of people in USA r mentaly sick. They will agressively come towards u without any reason or may be they r jealous.

In On Nut, I gave an old German lady who was asking for advice on where she could get a money transfer from overseas. She was robbed on the overnight train from Chiang Mai, I gave her advice and where to go, then I reached in my wallet and gave her the 1000 baht note I had. Normally I never give money, she asked how could she return it, I said not to worry. Pretty certain she didn’t go spend it on dodgy stuff and needed it. Apart from rare instances like that where it’s just a donation, never loan money.

Your last point really struck with me regarding tourists/expats always throwing hissy fits. The worse case I've ever seen was at a smaller night market where a large, middle aged guy was yelling to the lady, "How do you not understand any English!?!?!".... The audacity of that dude.

I started following you a few years back when you said Thailand was open for tourism with jumping threw many hoops...I loved watching every one of those 14 day quarantine video's you went through ..After watching those I was inspired to go through the same as you did but I used an agency to get me there. That was a once in a life time ordeal when I arrived in June 6 months after you.Remembering being the only plane arriving internationally being escorted to the transportation car taking me to my hotel and doing my 14 days..Then headed straight to Pattaya after that with all the bars being closed and restauraunts only doing takeout and Thaifriendly was your friend..... I stayed about 90 days being one of the few tourist at the time with only meeting expats living there....Im so glad I experienced Thailand at that unique time all because of your influence.....Like I said,A once in a life time experience.........

If you are going to lend money, don't expect it back and tell them they don't need to pay you back. But tell them this is the last time you will lend money to them. Also, Forrest. Forrest wise advice as always... for an expat living in Thailand, always conduct yourself as close to a Thai would in most situations. Thai culture and behavior is rooted in being a devout buddhist. so being mindful of that fact will help dealing with social activities with Thai citizens.

If your serious with your GF, you 100% should lend her the money. In fact even if your not serious give her money and see what she does with it. Not because she deserves it or for you to flex, but to test her. Better to lose a few thousand now than a whole lot more later.

After 55 years of passing through, working and now retired in Thailand. The craziest thing I see is foreigner men doing things for Thai women that they would never do for a woman in the country they came from. Would let your girlfriend or wife move her family into your home. Give money to you girlfriend to support her family? Even give money to the family to marry their daughter? I can't count the number of foriegn men I have seen in Thailand with a homely wife, the mother inlaw in tow, and 2 or 3, 100% Thai children at a mall. Stupid, stupid, stupid would you have done this in your home country? Is the Thai woman better than where you came from or just just easier to meet? From what I have seen many men that came to Thailand usually realized they should not have rushed in getting married, many have realized that Thai women are just as expensive as the woman they left.

It is good to have friends to play pickleball once per week. It seems to get popular these days. If no friends available to play sports, you can always do these solo sports (running, walking, swimming, biking, fishing, kayaking, lifting weight). If they need money for a ride home, just tell them to walk home and they would get some health benefit too. Just hang around with folks having the same mindset and you would have less borrowing money issue. If they do ask for money, tell them to get a loan from the bank.

This is advice for everywhere not just Thailand. I remember lending my terrible boss/supervisor 5 bucks for lunch because he said he didn't have cash. I told him I'll be asking for it back everyday. It just showed his character that my literal supervisor (who I ended up replacing in the next months) would finally give it back a week later because another boss heard about it and told him to pay me back. Yeah the rule is, never lend money you can't afford to give away. $5 was nothing but you figure out their character. So yeah don't lend money you aren't willing to lose, don't hang around degenerates who will get you in trouble and you're a guest in a foreign country so act like it.

I would first look up importing pets. Yes importing cause every country considers movement of live animals to be product including pets. That's how it's treated in the US too btw... Most have quarantine requirements. Could be months like in Japan, Taiwan or the UK. They are stuck in a cage and poked with a needle daily for blood tests. By the time you get your cats back, they won't be the same, probably a bit traumatized. In other words keep your cats at home and wait til they die of old age to move.

I'd say whenever I travel to Thailand that there are many good ex-pats. But a disproportionate number of expats are losers or a-holes compared to where they come from. So it's just something you gotta be aware of. We don't want to be guilty by association and end up with a toxic group of friends. Some people like Forrest are just trying to escape the rat race. But again, a disproportionate number of expats are escaping things far more sinister. Your best bet is to learn Thai and make local friends if you want to experience better quality people. Although there are some great people among the expat community. You just need to be deliberate in finding them. Avoid the sex-pats...lol chances are if they are in their 40s or 50s, and their wives are early 20s... Not the type of guy you wanna associate with.
