Yeah it can work on all portraits for sure...I do use it 99.9% of the time. For some, like females / young girls, you just need to be a bit more sensitive with the settings and reduce them so that you get the impact but don't affect the skin too much...if that makes sense

Thanks very good! One question Why duplicate the face after exposure? Why don’t you ad 20 on contraste texture and clarity on the fiesta mask ? Thanks Éric from Quebec
@glyndewis2 жыл бұрын
Éric you're not wrong to ask as many others have in the comments section. There's no technical reason for this..it's simply down to a life of using Photoshop and being used to keeping things in layers 👍

Glyn.... Love the video. Would you not change this up on female subject? maybe skip the first 20 and do a 20, 10. Just a question as I know they would prefer less contrast most of the time.
@glyndewis2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much. Yeah re a female subject you could certainly do that. I wouldn't say to do it anyway but would try it out to see and just tweak the settings for that particular image. Nothing is 'set in stone' as it's very much dependant on the image and the look you're after. Hope that helps 👍

Just came across this and learnt so much. I'm fairly new to editing pictures and using lightroom. So I have a question that may sound stupid to you and other experts. Why do you need to duplicate the 1st mask after you've increased the exposure? Why not do the contrast and other adjustments in the same mask? Wouldn't the end result be the same? It would be awesome if you could briefly explain this. I'll be checking out your other videos now. Thanks!

Great technique for character faces but not one I would use on female subjects.They tend to prefer softer texture on skin unless the subject is young with already smooth skin.

Just curious why you need the separate layer for exposure and the “20 “ contrast couldn’t you do it all in one layer?
@glyndewis2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't do it on one layer Ian purely because of the control it gives having it on individual layers but also I wouldn't be able to apply the 2nd part (10) only to the eyes, nose and mouth because if I add a mask then it would then hide everything done in the 20...if that makes sense. Separate layers means I can also tweak it if need be depending on the face.

Hi Glyn. I know you can down load the full package LR , Photoshop, ect. Watching how you use LR I am sure I would only need that, the only thing is, and I have never done it is. focus stacking for my land scape's. Can I only down load LR and do focus stacking with that?
@glyndewis2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ray. Lightroom continually improves and there's more and more I do in it now that I only over used to do in Photoshop. Lightroom (Cloud) is certainly faster and the layout is cleaner than Classic. As for Focus Stacking, you can't do that solely in Lightroom at the moment; you do need to export the images as layers into Photoshop and then use Auto Blend Layers as it then aligns them and creates the masks.

That's why I also showed how to do it in an earlier video. No point following my camera and light settings unless you're with me at the exact same time in the exact same location in the exact same light. The biggest difference between your portraits and others/trending styles is your f-stop is f2.0. Personally, I love lowering my f-stop. My first beauty shoot, all the images needed to look like 1800s western photography. So I shot at f1.8 on my 85mm and added paper textures, scratches, along with a sepia filter. The final product was so believable!

Yeah I've answered this a few times in the comments mate; 20/10 is a guide for settings I like to use as in this case on male portraits, but for females I tend to tone it down...there are no set numbers, but rather what works best. Hi Glyn, thank you so much for this. Really useful. My problem is I don't understand the theory! Am I being thick, but if you want to make the closer areas lighter and the further away areas darker, why use contrast? I would have thought you would use increased highlight or exposure on the near areas of the face. Why contrast? I went back to your original video on this technique in photoshop and I still don't quite get it! Please help!
@glyndewis2 жыл бұрын
Jonathan…If you just brighten an area it will become flat with no depth and dimension. The idea here is to make it feel as though it is coming forward so this is why contrast is used to deepen the darker areas in addition to brightening other areas but do so in a controlled way. It especially works a treat when printed. I’ve tried other methods over the years but the layers of contrast gives the best result in my opinion. It was really evident how well it works when folks saw the large prints at the exhibition.

@glyndewis2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely it could Wayne. All I would say is just do the 20 part only and reduce the amount if you're doing this on full length shots. The 20/10 settings are great for close up head shots; anything further back I would just reduce it as the smaller the area, the less the amounts should be. Hope that helps 👍

Second Comment: Glyn, I tried your 20/10 method on a group shot of 15 college students. I studied the before and after photos side-by-side on a full screen display and enlarged. As I scrolled past each face there is a slight but noticeable sharpness, definition, and brightness. My original was lacking and your 20/10 version is the winner. The light source was church lighting but not strong. My camera is a Nikon Z II with a 24-70 mm lens shot at F10 and low ISO. Thank You, Father Dan

Hello dear distant friend, I wanted to tell you that it`s a very nice system, I don`t have lightroom but I think it can also be done in capture one, or at least I hope so. When I didn`t have a f.1,4 portrait lens yet, to make the similar effect I used to make two masks: the first one more blurred and the second one closer to the central area of the face, less blurred. Anyway it`s nice and fast and can replace the two passes with USM20 and 10 zonal in photoshop.

Great technique to give facial features some extra pop. Thanks so much for sharing. I find your tips very easy to follow and they will definitely improve and simplify my post process work.

Great video and just what I need! I have some wildlife images from my Antarctica trip and was stuck on how to enhance faces, especially on monotone seals. Thanks!

Love it Glyn, I used this technique last night on a group of headshot of photos, slightly modified....wow! Just enough to noticeably stand out .

@Glyn Dewis but why to create new mask for every setting if you can use the same mask for multiple settings when editing the same area?

That’s already been answered in the comments mate; just my ‘Photoshop’ brain at the time

@@glyndewis Haven't tried it yet, but definitely will do! I imagine it would work a treat on dogs as well.

Great video could you explain how you did the 'cut out ' at the beginning? Very new to lightroom, as you can tell 😀

Hi Karen ... do you mean how I selected only the face? If so that was just using a Brush in the Masking Section in Lightroom.
