In playback mode, slow the speed to .75 or .50, and turn on closed caption (cc). It's great for non-speed listeners/readers because you get better comprehension, understanding, and memory retention. It's great for note taking during and/or after academic lectures also. This is especially important for video learning because of covid. With these techniques you should be ahead of non-users with smart video taping of classroom lectures. In playback mode, slow the speed to .75 or .50, and turn on closed caption (cc). I agree 100% with this approach. I retired at 56 with about 65% of my money in pre-tax accounts and the rest in Roth, HSA, and virtually tax-free accounts. It has been my strategy and will continue to be - at least until I start collecting SS probably in 7 years. In 3.5 years of retirement, I’ve already shifted my pre-tax accounts down to almost only 50% using this method. Despite 3.5 years of withdrawals, I actually have about a 10-12% higher overall balance in my accounts than when I first retired. This is despite a horrible March 2020 & 2022.. .and I have at least 7 years of this to go. Hopefully by then I’ll have only about a third of my money in pre-tax accounts which will make for very reasonable RMDs at age 75 from a tax perspective.

@@davidwarnke5990you take out more than you need because one can take advantage of a certain low tax bracket like 12%. Ideally one would only need let’s say 60k to live on. Why only take out 60k when there is around an extra 50k there at the 12%. Assume MFJ and 28k or so for Standard Deduction. That extra 50k can be taken out or converted into Roth. One should also have already set monies aside to pay for taxes. Never take out more than 12% for most. Josh didn’t do the right thing IMO. He won’t even be able to use the standard deduction. It’s free money. One can basically take out 28k a year tax free or at least that portion. The next 30k is at 10%. This is with the current tax law though. Who would have known this. After 2026, this may change but the 15% bracket will most likely be there and it will be at a higher income level range. Roth is meant to start when early and when in the low tax bracket like now. For high income folks they have to strategize and save then do back door if over the income limit.

One "problem" we have is that my wife saved all her money in a deferred account and now has right at $1 million in that IRA. We don't need that money right now, so we have to assume it will continue to grow within that account. If we see "average" returns over the next 15 years, she will have over $2 million when RMDs begin. We retired early, so Obamacare is a consideration for the next 7 years. We have to do a juggling act on pulling income for a while. I don't want to pay a dime more in taxes than I absolutely must, but if paying too much in taxes is the biggest problem we have in retirement..I'll be ok.

Exactly. I have way more than 500k in every bucket. I finally realized minimizing taxes wasn't my real goal, so this year I did a Roth conversion like for like and cap gains to pay the taxes. Best part was that the stock I transferred tanked in Jan and I hurried up and did the conversion asap. It has now recovered and is now way up at all time high. That slingshot more than covers the taxes. Pure luck but I'll take it.

One recommendation. I think the ACA subsidies in some cases not be as advantageous as you think since it forces you to spend your most tax advantaged savings first/early rather than using those years to whittle away at those tax deferred accounts (can be much more advantageous than those ACA subsidies for many situations) If you are relatively healthy prior to age 65 then there are other very affordable healthcare options in many states … check out State Farm Health policies as Joe Kuhn talked about in his recent interview with Josh. I have Solidarity HealthShare which I’m very happy with! I retired 11 years prior to my FRA which is the best opportunity possible to shift a ton of tax-deferred money to Roth, brokerage, and/or spend it first in a low tax tax bracket the let it grow tax-free. You’ll be happy when RMDs roll around. Those early retired years are more valuable the more you have in tax deferred so sometimes trying to be poor on paper for Obamacare CAN be a bad decision you will pay for later on when it’s too late. Short term it seems best and for some ACA is the only option due to health status.. but if not, at least explore.

@@jdthompson5778 - Good advice. Retirement gurus always seem to have in mind social security and pensions, and discourage owning equities. So they focus on minimizing taxes. They think if you've got good enough numbers from ss and pension, then you just need to minimize taxes. But what if you can't count on dual income ss or pension so you built up big buckets of pre, post, and taxable with equities? Just figure out what money you want where according to your strategy, and pay the taxes, within reason of course (not huge lump sums probably). Investing strategy doesn't stop when you retire. I know people want to check out of everything, but it doesn't work that way.

Josh, What you are saying in the video works for someone with assets under a certain amount that does not expect their assets to last beyond their lifetime. Remember that the tax advantages of a Roth passes onto heirs. Also, If you pass your IRA to your heirs, they have 10 years to clean it out. If its your kids, they will probably be at their peak earning years at the time of inheritance and be paying the highest tax rates on the IRA assets. Its better that they get the assets in the form of a Roth. Finally, if you have brokerage assets in excess of $2.5 - $3 mil, chances are, the dividends and interest today will push you above the income level that will keep you at a 0% tax level. At that point, you may want to convert your IRA to a roth at an amount that takes you to the bottom of the next bracket.

Well, I agree to a certain extent. But If you have a large IRA account you need to make distributions/conversions to your Roth. I will still maintain my taxable brokerage account, but I will essentially be living off my Roth IRA which is funded by my annual IRA conversions (~150K/yr) which will be taxed at an overall rate of about 15%. This will keep us below the minimum RMDs when they kick in. We are also delaying our SS until 70. I am planning to set up our cash bucket in staggered 1, 3, and 6 month T-bills for the foreseeable future. We are also moving to state with zero income tax. SC is 7%. On drawing out of your Vanguard and similar accounts, you briefly talked about it. For cost basis, use "specific identification". I used this to get $$ tax free to pay cash for a home. I harvested specific purchases,, some had losses, some had small gains. I balanced these out and paid minimal taxes. On Roth conversions, don't be scared of "paying the taxes". RMDs are incredibly low, and on traditional IRAs, you deferred the taxes for decades. It's OK to pay a little tax as you start drawing it down. Roths work best if you want to pass the money on. But many people with 7 figure balances in 401K accounts, it really doesn't make sense. Pay hundreds of thousands in taxes IMMEDIATELY, to avoid relatively small yearly taxes later? No thanks!

Tax deferred accounts are perfectly fine. The issue for some people is when they have too much money in tax deferred accounts. Too much money is when you have to take out more than you want to take out, hence leading you to pay more in taxes than you want. If I only need to take $24K from tax deferred accounts and I only have enough to keep takinng $24K adjusted for inflation, then conversions don't do much since taxes would already be so low that they also don't really affect social security benefits.

So, the suggestion is to split your retirement savings into brokerage accounts (50%) and IRA (50%) - and do not do any Roth conversions - and just live off the IRA but keep your income from withdrawals and Social Security within the 12% tax bracket? Doesn’t this go against your statement at the end where you have your retirement savings split into brokerage and Roth accounts? Did you not utilize pre-tax IRA and put your savings directly into a Roth? Or what? thanks.

He gets the 120k limit for MFJ from $120,000 taxable income - standard deduction for MFJ of $29200 (2024) plus a little dividend and interest income to stay under the income limit for MFJ of $94050 (2024) which is the taxable income limit for capital gains tax with zero tax.

Well, trying to live off of cash (bank accounts, I-bonds) for the next 2-3 years, while taking the opportunity to do Roth conversions on my wife's 401k & IRA before the low tax rates end Jan 1, 2026. By then she can take Social Security at FRA. We figure to take $ out of my IRA'S to supplement and refill our savings/checking accounts until I reach 70. Without getting into balances I'll just say my IRA is 2.5 time greater than her 401k/IRA. So I'm not sure if we'll ever get mine converted to Roth to without going into higher tax brackets. It was recommended by someone that we go into the 22-24% brackets, and pay the conversion with money inside of our IRA's/401k's, but I'm not sure I want to do that. Plus it would be nice to keep IRMAA premiums low if possible. Guess we'll wait until near the end of the year to see what are income is and how much we want to convert.

Great video. Most advisors say save up some cash to do Roth Conversions once you hit retirement. Me, I'm not a big fan of using the savings I have managed to amass after paying taxes to prepay taxes. Particularly given that Congress can change the rules on Roth accounts at any time. The presenter is right IMO. If you want to take future taxes off the table, withdraw from your deferred accounts sooner rather than later, pay taxes and live off the money. That money is than off the table to be taxed in the future. Reserve your after-tax accounts to live off later as they have good if not better tax attributes (particularly for your heirs) anyway. This may not be the best approach in every scenario, but definitely something to think about. Thanks to the presenter for posting.
