When I just went to renew my passport the lady told me to bring my extra passport photo with me but leave it onboard and leave a photo copy of my passport at home with someone not traveling with me in the event that my passport was lost or stolen doing those to things would make it easier to get it situated at a consulate office

When I was in Mexico I had my wallet in my front jeans pocket. Getting on a train someone behind me was pushing and it didn’t seem right, so I reached for my wallet and snatched it out of mid-air. A lady had managed to get it out of my pocket (during the push) without me being aware of it. Fortunately she didn’t get it in the end.

The water proof waist pouches are one of the best things I’ve bought for beach vacations. My husband and I snorkel a lot and don’t like to leave anything on the beach besides our flip flops and towels and we take our cruise cards and phones in the water with us and it works like a charm. Highly recommend to everyone!

I have a Travelon cross body anti-theft bag for ports, and I’ve used it in places known for pickpockets. The zippers all have carabiner locking clips, and my most important items are in the zippered compartment that rests against my body. I’ve never felt unsafe with it. The card slots and a pouch big enough for a passport are back there, with RFID protection. It was important to have my passport in Venice and in St. Petersburg, Russia. (The latter isn’t currently a cruise port due to the invasion of Ukraine.) I don’t bring my passport for Caribbean ports. I use my driver’s license as my photo ID. My advice to men is that a wallet in a front pocket isn’t safe, either. Money belt that you can tuck into the waistband is safest. Being aware of your surroundings helps. Pickpockets work in teams and hand off what they lift to others.

If you go on a domestic excursion while keeping your passport in your cabin safe, if you find that your combination no longer opens your safe when you try to open it later, contact the ship security to investigate your room access during the time you were out…these safes have at least one back door method of opening and that may have gotten into the wrong hands. Probably a few of the international workers on your cruise ship would love to get your personal info…also take the address info off your luggage during your stay.
@gatorguy7711
@gatorguy7711 Жыл бұрын
All good points... As soon as we get to our cabin, all valuables including jewelry, passports, car keys, wallets, and extra cash go in the safe. Have you noticed on the newer ships the safes are getting smaller? I also suggest that you leave expensive jewelry and watches at home. We only take our passports with us off the ship when we are in Europe or where required. I use a money belt for our passport and cash. When in Europe be on alert for pick pockets and keep all luggage very close as luggage is stolen frequently. When in the Caribbean or Canada we only take a picture ID. While no longer in fashion (my wife tells me), I do have several pair of cargo shorts with front pockets with zippers. These are great for securing your phone, small bills, and your wallet. When in port, we are also very selective where we use our credit cards. Both my wife and I always have a small amount of cash in an easy assessable pocket for drinks or souvenirs. We do use our lockable luggage (under the bed) to store large valuable items and anything we purchase in port. Tip: For each port, I do take a picture of the Cruise Lines Port Agent information (name and telephone number) usually in the Daily Planner. If you have an emergency in port, this is the way you can contact the cruise ship. Also, if you do not return to the ship on time and are left behind, the cruise line will normally go to your cabin and get your passport and leave it with the port agent. This will allow you to fly to the next port or to fly home. Merry Christmas and Happy Cruising...

My husband takes one card (for example, Amex) and I take a different one (for example, a Visa). That way, if one of us looses it (or the wallet) and we have to cancel it, we still have another one to manage. We do this for any travel.

I use a Waterseals locking waterproof bag (drawstring backpack) for the pool and the beach. It is plenty big enough for a phone, tablet or even a laptop and it can lock to your chair. I also carry several retractable cable locks that I can thread through all of the zipper loops on my backpack and attach to an immovable object.

Most people have a 'find my phone' feature on their phones but few know how to use it or access it. It's a must on my checklist not just for theft but also if I simply leave it somewhere. Ever go back to where you left it and it was picked up by staff? This feature knew exactly where security stored it.

When traveling, protect your credit cards and passports by keeping them in RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) blocking sleeves, wallet and /or backpacks. Many modern cards use radio-frequency identification (RFID) for contactless payment. A thief close enough to you with the right device can use this technology to “scrape” your credit card information.

No matter what you wear a local can always ALWAYS tell a tourist even before they open their mouth. I live in the port of Vancouver and every summer I can tell who came off a ship- even the white Americans that look just like me- they have different body language. Plus the port in right downtown so everyone downtown during the day is dressed for work or in Vancouver casual which is different dress code than what people wear on vacation. Even when I go shopping on robson street right by the port and my apartment in my casual shopping wear and there is a difference to what I look like and people dressed for vacation. Foot wear especially. When I eat at restaurants you can tell who came off the ship and who is local in so many ways. Mainly how the people fit together at a table. Monday lunch downtown Vancouver is only coworker lunches or vacationers. Our tables look and act differently. Locals know locals so don’t worry about a cruise badge. They already know. You can put a fat American man and Canadian man that is the exact same weight and height beside each other (silently so you can’t hear the accents) and you can tell the difference in who is who. Even the way we are fat is different. No matter the size the beer belly an American body language/posture is different and the weight settles different. That beer belly makes Americans pull their shoulders back proud and walk belly first. A Canadian posture is totally opposite. I’m just saying, no matter where you are in the world people can tell you are local. Even within your own country if it is vast: If this vancouverite steps foot in Toronto they can tell immediately that im not only not a local but they know exactly what city I came from before I open my mouth. Local culture has its own body language and style accent. Subconsciously we can even smell each other and that gives clues to localness. Don’t ever bother trying to fit in with locals unless you live with and amoungst them for a considerable amount of time. Even then your localness would still have an “accent”

We keep it really simple - waterproof pouch for phone on a lanyard, credit cards and cash goes in zipped pocket of swim suit, lip balm, towel and clean tee shirt in backpack. DH has a Rick Steves small security pouch that you run a belt through then tuck into pants - he carries to ID, credit card and cash in that for city excursions. We did have to carry our passports in Russia when we were on our own, other than that do not carry it. My caution is to put your jewelry in a bag with a zipper so that you do not accidentally leave anything in your dark safe, twice I have found an earring that someone left behind.

My daughter gave me something called a FLEX SAFE for Christmas last year. Big enough to store your phone, wallet, credit card, room key etc. Downside is the chairs at the beach have such wide edges, handles etc that the handle couldn't go around them to secure the flex safe to the chair. Will pack our coil bike lock for our upcoming cruise; and use that to secure the FLEX SAFE to the chair. Over kill....maybe...but will discourage a thief and they may move on to other targets.

I don't reccomend TSA locks, The keys for these locks are readily available on line for sale and any crim with more than a weeks experience will have the full set handy. I zip tie my luggage zippers, if the TSA wants to get in they can do so easily and without damaging the luggage and the TSA will leave a note inside anything they have opened saying so. Unfortunately having worked in and with the security industry I can say that locks only keep honest people out.

I once traveled with a large group of friends, one couple brought a his/her rolex matching watch set and had it in a small carry on, which they let the crew handle. It did not arrive with the rest of the luggage to the room and they were hysterical screaming: my his and her watches!!!! The carry on was nowhere to be found, security dis all they could and were apologizing. We went to late dinner, the show, then dancing. They were inconsolable. There, one of the men in our large party, a friend, approached them and said, hey! I got one of your luggage delivered to my room, I just came from there, I had not been to my cabin yet. All of us were relieved. I hope they learned their lesson.

I was on a Caribbean cruise and went to the business center to check my email. There were several open computers. When I sat down, there was a big, loaded key ring, a pile of cash, a thick wallet, and some other stuff. I did what I 11:36 do and no-one came for these things. I gathered them up and took them to the computer room help desk. When I asked if there was a lost and found she looked at me a little confused. She then said she could take the loot to the main desk in about 2 hours when her shift ended. I wasn't comfortable with that, so I took it myself. I am sure he got his stuff, but I never heard back for sure. So, men need to consider a murse or something if their pockets aren't large enough for what they want to carry around.

I take my passport with me on port excursions in a theft-proof crossbody bag that I wear in front of me all the time with my hand on it. If I go swimming the passport goes into my waterproof phone case. The only cruisers I know of who got their passports stolen in ports had it in backpacks and in purses they had beside them. I only put items in a backpack that I’m willing to get stolen like an extra towel, sweatshirt, water bottle, sunglasses, etc.

I usually bring a slash proof cross body bag, an RFID blocking wallet to protect my credit cards, and keep a small amount of cash. When I use the lanyard around my neck, I tuck it inside my shirt until needed. That way, I'm not walking around proclaiming "I'm a tourist". I keep a copy of my passport on my phone, and most of the time I leave the actual passport in the safe. Since they are harder to replace, I always add an extra layer of protection when possible. I like the idea of the lock box safe and tethering it to a chair or tree. Thieves are looking for a quick score, and the harder it is for them to grab and run; the less of a target you will be.

Well I hate to burst your bubble. I haven't been on a cruise in about 20 years. I am going in July to Alaska. The reason I haven't cruised in so long is because the last time I went on a cruise my husband bought me a very expensive pair of earrings. Well very expensive for us. But the night before we disembarked, I stupidly left them in the box on the dresser in the cabin. There was no one in my room except the cabin attendant to turn down the beds. When I came in that night I realized they were gone. But could I do? I have no proof. All I could do is report them missing in case they were found. It really killed me because back then you still did the money and tips and we tipped him four or five times the expected amount because he had been wonderful. I was just blown away.

For women, especially of the well-endowed sort: Sew a pocket into your bra or the 'shelf' of a sports top. Make it closeable so contents don't spill out into your dinner when you lean forward. It doesn't hold much but it can hold a locker key, a Princess Cruises medallion, a little bit of well-folded cash, or other critical items. If whatever you're carrying can get wet, you can sew it into a swimsuit. It's ideal for being a small thing that protects a larger thing. Concealed locker keys for the win!

@@canuck8228 - it's the norm on most US based cruise lines. Occasionally we are required to turn them into the purser in some ports or countries due to local laws requiring all passports to be checked before the ship can be cleared for shore excursions. These are relatively rare occasions. Some countries require all visitors to have their passports with them whenever ashore, again rare. Russia comes instantly to mind.

Great videos as always. I like your tip of bringing a lock because often my camera cannot fit into the safe. Now I can lock my camera up inside my suitcase.

i slide my credit card and id behind my sail and sign card in protector on a lanyard id on outer side so credit card not visible. once I'm off ship, I wear it under my clothes. cash goes in a cross body bag that is very thin but resembles a pouch/backpack. it is easily hidden uner a jacket or overshirt.

I keep 2 wallets, 1 in the safe and 1 on me. Both have IDs, credit cards, and cash. The passports stay in the safe, passport cards are on our personal wallets. I never bring anything valuable like jewelry or expensive handbags, even though it’s a bummer not having to use them. Just don’t want to have to worry about them. As a matter of fact, I bring old clothes and slippers and toss them instead of taking them home.

I leave my passport in my cruise cabin safe. I will take my passport card (has picture) as ID if going off the ship on an excursion. I've never had an excursion that required me to take my passport with me. Also I treat my ship SailPass card as my most important ID and safeguard that with my valuables. I have a locking backpack that I can take on excursions to provide some safeguards

I do the same thing with my passport. A photo copy and a pic in my phone, but the actual passport never leaves the safe until it has too. Also, it can't fix the sentimental value an item may have but most major insurance company will gladly write you up a policy to protect those higher value items. Then they are covered when you do travel or if something even happens closer to home.

Bringing your passport in port may be a good idea, if for some reason you miss the ship a picture id will not get you on a plane, a passport would be needed.

I always believed that is I have a lock it looks like something valuable. And don't they just remove the entire item? For instance, if you lock your back pack, they just steal the back pack?

When I got my last passport, I was able to also order a passport card. Looks kind of like a drivers license but it is actually a copy of my passport. I carry that off the ship and leave passport in safe. The paper copy is a good idea I didn’t think of.

I was once in a carnival cruise in a room with balcony and decided to go to the room and relax instead of roaming around and while doing so, I noticed the neighbor peeping out trying to cross from his room to mine! He didn’t realize i was in my room until afterwards and quickly moved back to his room. That experience made realize that oftentimes we don’t pay attention to our safety as much as we should do. I wonder if there’s any security measures to take to stop others from opening the sliding doors on your cruise room?

I always lock my balcony door once I've gone back inside - on Royal Caribbean ships, its not really safe for someone in the next cabin to access the balcony. I lock it as it is required for the balcony door to be locked in order for the air conditioning to work. I am more concerned about the front door to the cabin and it being open when I am not there if the room is being cleaned, etc. I use my suitcases as methods to lock up laptop or camera as they don't fit in the safe.

We, too, have both the book and card and use the card mostly when we drive to Mexico but it is the bomb when we are going on a US/Mexico/Caribbean cruise. You need the book if your port is in Central or South America, though.

I am Canadian and have always brought our passports with us on excursions. At the beach i would put passports in plastic to avoid water/sand. But on last excursion, someone stole our umbrella and towel clips that were attached to chairs. So it got me scared to bring passports again.

When we cruise one of us always stays in the cabin at all times so we can look after the valuables and we never leave the ship when in port. Also always book an inside cabin to prevent anyone climbing in through the balcony And use room service all the time. We have never lost anything when one of us leaves the room normally for a walk we go on port days when the ship is less crowded or very early in the morning. And always keep your luggage stacked against the door and we do a 4 on 4 off watch system so one of us is always awake Stay safe out there.
