What an interesting approach to packing! I have tried various methods for packing over the decades I've been travelling, including the 54321, the 333, and the packing list method. Here's my tip. I always pack a t-shirt dress, change of underwear and a pair of flip flops in my personal item, in case my suitcase gets lost or in case my flight is delayed overnight. I can use the dress as a nightie, a casual dress or a swim suit coverup. I can change into the dress when I reach my destination if I feel grubby from travelling or if I spill something on my travel clothes. I can wear the flip flops by the pool, at the beach or in a hotel room. One other item I pack in my personal item is a large scarf or pashmina, which I can wear as a scarf, as a shawl, as a pareo, or use as a blanket on the plane. I've been using separate zip lock bags to contain the clothing, shoes, and pashmina (the latter folds down so that it fits in a sandwich bag). And I always throw a plastic bag into my suitcase for laundry, to keep the dirty clothes separated from the clean one. I hope someone finds my tip useful in their travels.

Sounds like the perfect outfit juuuust in case your luggage doesn't make it. Going carry-on only is a great way to make sure your luggage doesn't get lost too.

I learned the hard way: Always carry a beige bra if you're wearing a black one for travel. If your bag gets lost or delayed, shopping for a different colored bra (or a bathing suit) is a pain. I always carry an extra change of clothes in my personal item bag, too.

This is a tip after my own heart. I'm doing carry on this year and I've been thinking along similar lines. I always keep an extra plastic bag or two in my carry-on too, to put any jackets or hats etc in those dirty bins at security.

What a lot of clothes changes every day. One week away in Europe a couple of weeks ago- 2 trousers, 1 skirt, 1 dress, 1 cardigan, 2 jackets, raincoat, 6 tops, 1 trainers, 2 sandals, cross body bag and tote. These took me from cool to hot, casual to smart, dry to wet, and includes what I wore.

I recently returned from a 3 week summer European trip, visiting 3 countries. I packed pajamas, 2 trousers (denim & beige), 3 colorful blouses, 3 t-shirts (white, black & green), 1 linen long sleeve shirt, 1 pair of black shorts, 1 pair black leggings, 1 black hoodie, 2 bras black & beige, 1 sports bra, 6 underwear, 6 socks, 4 silk scarves, 1 bathing suit, 1 necklace, 1 bracelet, 1 pair tennis shoes, 1 pair sandals. I was able to wash my clothes twice at 2 of the Airbnb’s we rented. I packed it all in a 20 inch suitcase and saved room for destination purchases. I purposefully packed lighter than usual because I carried on my luggage and walked to every hotel from the train. I also wore a 10 L backpack & a crossbody bag for plane & train rides.

I love this 3 day method! The everyday wardrobe especially! I have a formula I use - no new clothes or shoes (they might prove to be troublesome in some way); versatile, packable, comfortable clothes only, (especially shoes - even for dressing up); mix and match as much as possible; add scarves for color and interest; bring a small umbrella and possibly a jacket or coat. I use any days we move to other cities to start the rotation over. Just remember - chances are no one really cares about your clothes as long as they conform to dress expectations for the event. Enjoy!

I had a client tell me something some yrs. back that just blew my mind! She said her and her hubby went on a backpacking trip through Europe and they only took what would fit into their backpacks. They planned on staying in each hotel one or two nights__this is what they did: - they each took 2 or 3 pair of undies(as they could wash one out while wearing one plus an extra), she took a bra, and something to sleep in. - they each took a pr. of shorts, a bathing suit, one tee, and wore their jeans, a tee, and a wind breaker on traveling days. - they each took a pr. of sandals, and wore walking shoes during travel time. - they took toiletries they could share, to save space, she took simple make-up items(lips, eyes). - in each area they stayed they bought a tee as a souvenir, and if needed a more appropriate top(or simple outfit) for an unexpected but less casual outing. - as they traveled they would either wash clothes at the hotel after wearing them more than once, or they would pack them up as packages and send them home. - as they traveled, they repeated the 'sending their dirty laundry home' scenario and traveled the whole time with just their backpacks__and by the time they arrived home, so did their 'packages'. I thought that was the most brilliant plan I'd ever heard! 💖🙌😺

Loved this video! I am a list maker. So I have a packing and trip todo list that I edit for each new trip. I start making edits weeks out, whenever I think of anything specific this new trip will need packed or done. I list out my clothing pieces I expect to pack, some by name some are socks x7. Then when it's time to pack I just have to go off the list, and it really reduces decision fatigue for me. I might put back a few things if I over did it, but for shorter trips/places we've been before I can usually nail it in the list making phase. It's an art!

I like this 3-day idea. Light colors for the travel day, that's brave. I prefer lighter-weight items and a more minimalist approach. Fewer shoes, fewer purses, no leather, no jeans. Fantasy self or what if items are creating more bulk.
@susie98932 ай бұрын
Yes, people gotta learn that their fantasy self didn't pay for an extra ticket so needs to get left behind 😊 PS. And while I've also flirted with the idea of taking a leather jacket, at the end of the day they're just far too heavy and bulky to be practical - even if you wore on plane (could only do for short flights, likely domestic only, and short trip - don't want to have to wear or lug that heavy thing around everywhere)

One pair of shorts, one pair of pants (NEVER jeans as they take way too long to dry), three shirts, three pair of underwear, one pair of shoes that I wear. Also a light weight jacket. To dress up, two pairs of earrings and eyeliner and mascara. Everything else you might need, buy it there. Packing minimally brings me much peace as a traveler.

You are so lucky and wish that I could. But if one is larger than the local foreign population and has feet larger than the larger population it is very difficult to buy outside one’s home country. And if you are a klutz like me, then inevitably you tear or stain the one pair of pants or shorts that you have. And if one doesn’t mind stinking, which I’ve noticed many of my fellow Americans do when traveling because they don’t wash themselves and/or their clothes, that works as well.

I love your energy and enthusiasm! But I must say as an older traveler, packing purses to match different outfits, fancy dresses, special undies/bras, belts, etc… is not worth it. Take versatile clothes that are COMFORTABLE and mix and match with everything. Layering is key. And one good cross body bag and one backpack. Depending on your destination, only 3 pairs of shoes are needed…sneakers, another pair of comfy shoes (ie. loafers, Bobs, etc.) and either flip flops, hiking boots or rain boots. Packing cubes are a game changer for me and my tribe! My bestie and I are off to Ireland and Northern Ireland in mid September. We’ll be there for 3 weeks. Everything we need will be in 2 carry ons and 2 personal bags. Renting a car and traveling on our own will be awesome and most likely better than when we did Ireland with a tour group in 1984 😉

Although a few key accessories can make all the difference. Changing up a look while also functional. I swear by 1 dress belt (wear on plane so doesn't take up space or weight in bag), 1 dress watch (wear at all times), 2 scarves (can save you taking those just-in-case blouses - they do easily dress up basics). [Having said this, I may do without the first 2 if I'm going on a strictly beach vacation. @kamloopscruiser874Ай бұрын
👍 it’s interesting to see how you think it through. I start with my shoes. 3 pair. Usually the travel day is a pair of dressy loafers (easy on & off) plus 2 others - dressy ish but comfy sandals that can double as beach wear and running shoes. Once I pick shoes everything else has to work with them. 3 essential Purses- the personal item is usually my Longchamps LE Pliage and I have a small nylon RFID Baggalini cross body that will disappear into my bigger bag if required. Not counting a neck thing with my passport, cash, credit cards, ID & travel documents that disappears into my top. I pack a dressy clutch, and blingy jewelry plus a favourite black silk, lace and beaded wrap to wear with a light black silky top to dress up my black dressy casual pants with. Whether I wear the sandals or the loafers it’s all black and dressy now. From then on its daily clothes to fit the occasions and the weather. I’m working with my 3 pairs of shoes & 3 purses which are in my favourite neutral- black. I have a pair of dressy casual black pants and a black silk top already. Hot climate: Beach or pool is next- 2 bathing suits and a cover up that will double as a light jacket- my favourite white linen blouse. 2 linen shorts- beige & white plus 3 tank tops in a bright accent, black & white. That white linen blouse will look wonderful with the black linen tank and the dressy black pants so that’s another option. Linen blends work well to resist wrinkles but I like the casual look of linen. I hand wash as needed. Cold climate: I have 2 coats that scrunch up into tiny bags - a black down puffer and a navy windbreaker. Those are wonderful to use in winter when travelling somewhere warm as they pack away easily when not needed. Travel outfit: usually the black loafers which slip on & off at security but stay on easily if I have to run for a gate. The black dressy casual pants. The dressy black silky tank top, big silk scarf in a colourful print, thin black merino wool cardigan and the Le Pliage plus crossbody. A nice pair of pearl stud earrings which I wear a lot & will be my main jewelry choice. For extra warmth I always wear my grey cashmere shawl scarf and black puffer coat but those stuff into my Le Pliage or carry on when I’m not wearing them. I strip down as needed to the tank top (a rayon polyester very breathable blend, that rinses out in a sink, dries quickly) and pants. The travel day outfit is elevated enough that I get upgraded to business class at times. I’m pulled together but it’s comfortable. The pants are actually a dressy breathable pair of Ponte knit with an elastic waist and have a little give to them. The top is the silky rib knit rayon blend tank that works for dressed up evenings by adding the silk and lace beaded wrap, the clutch, sandals and blingy earrings. Cardigan jackets are the easiest second layers, adding warmth and pulling a look together so I choose 2- the travel day is always the thin black merino and tropical climates the white linen blouse is essential so a nice accent colour or alternate neutral is my second choice. Skirts, pants or shorts- pick 3. For each bottom pick 2 tops. If it’s cold pick at least 2 wool or cashmere pullovers to go with the pants and several cotton T-shirts for comfort underneath. A dress if needed. A couple of earrings, another scarf for added colour and print, a folding umbrella in a vivid cheerful colour- hot pink or red so an Uber or taxi can see you easily as the right person. I don’t bring my whole skincare routine but I pare down to my absolute essentials. Those makeup eraser cloths eliminate a liquid or balm leaving me pack just a moisturizer that doubles as an eye cream plus an SPF. I buy a body SPF there. Makeup is minimal- lately I’ve been using the Merit stuff - especially the stick foundation/concealer and the brush plus bronzer stick, an eyebrow pencil and mascara. A Bobbi Brown eye shadow stick blends with my finger. A lipstick doubles as a cream blush. I like a powder compact with a mirror & I have a retracting brush so touch ups are easy. I pick a neutral daytime lipstick and a classic red, berry or bright shade for evenings. One pair sunglasses, 1 watch. A packable sun hat.

For warmth a chasmere and/or merino top/sweater is my go-tos. Also merino wool socks. In shoes, like tennies I look for ones with Gore-Tex as that has always kept my feet dry. I have yet to find a good packable rain coat with a hood that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. BTW, I'm 70 and I have some of your packing cubes. I've thought about getting the toiletry bag for my next trip, whenever that is.

This is so helpful to think about what you’re doing on the trip. We’re going to Europe in August for 9 days including travel days and we have three travel days, a Taylor Swift concert, a Disneyland trip, and a fancy dinner in London that are set events. Most days will be an everyday. I’m planning on packing a change of clothes in each of our personal items on travel days so we can do a quick change at the airport when we land.

@@portiaread9484I used to think this too, but then I discovered the hack of tying a knot at the hem. Not only does this shorten the dress but it also keeps it closer to your body so less likely to get caught on, in or dangling thru anything. (And gives you a different look). And, if you pick the right black maxi, you can use it as a layering piece - a bit like a pinafore, where you layer under with contrasting t-shirts &/or undershirts (even a blouse). Sometimes a black maxi is the basic the rest of my travel capsule hangs on (depending on the trip - fabulous for a shoulder season trip where you might need to dress up a bit but not too formal - think a scarf or a dressy shrug/kimono. Can also wear tights or even thermals underneath + ankle boots or sneakers). Would seriously recommend you reconsidering the black maxi

I recently went to Spain for 3 weeks horseback riding, 😅 hiking, via Ferreta and 4 days in Madrid with friends to go to fancy restaurants and outings., with a carry-on and a small small backpack. I had clothes for cold weather and everything you need to ride a horse for a week. Everything fit in my suitcase including my riding boots, chaps, shirts, sweaters, puffer jacket, etc. I had 3 dresses and one skirt. I wore everything I brought and I guess I sorta did what you did, packing for the days I knew I was going to have.

I like the concept of thinking through each day or event. However, I prefer a carry-on only backpack. I use two medium size packing cubes which fit perfectly in my eBags Motherlode backpack - one for tops and one for bottoms , including layering pieces and stuffing socks and underwear in the sides. The two cubes fit about 12 tops and 8 bottoms including pjs, etc. Only two pairs of shoes (wearing the bulkier one), one purse and one jacket (worn). Shoes are the hardest thing to pare down, but I much prefer carry-on than bringing more stuff to check and lug.

Wow this advice is fantastic. I followed this packing method for a recent 2-week trip to Europe, and it worked beautifully. I wore everything I packed and only had to do a small load of laundry during the second week. I used the compression cubes, and they made a big difference. I was able to get everything (including my leather jacket and 3 pairs of shoes) into a carry-on bag. I joked that it was my "neutron star" because it had some much clothing compressed into it. I was worried that the items would be wrinkled from being compressed, but they were mostly perfect except for a silk dress that I just had to hang in the bathroom while I took a shower, and it was fine. I flew on Delta, which was OK with my 32 lb carry-on, but if you are flying another airline in Europe, make sure you check weight restrictions. I took some extra stuff, like a large cashmere wrap and leather coat, that I could have worn instead of packing. I also carried a large tote-style purse for my computer and personal items. In the past, I've always checked a bag and worried about the bag making it to my destination. It felt great to have all my stuff with me on the plane and know that my things were safe. It was also great to have a smaller bag because we took several trains during our trip.

I don’t know if this would help you, but just in case…layering can keep you toasty warm if need be. Wearing two shirts, or two pairs of socks works well. Also a fleece or wool sweater and raincoat together are as good as a winter coat unless it is well below freezing. Bon voyage!
@anakerose4 ай бұрын
@skokokelli yep, we've been to Alaska a few times. We didn't even bring our winter coats because it's supposed to be in the mid teens Celsius and I don't even bust out my puffer until it gets we'll below freezing at home. Our biggest issue is we have 7 days between when we'll have access to laundry at the beginning of our trip so had to pack accordingly. Once we get on the ship we can do it more frequently.

I use it on travel days for warmth, a swim cover up, a hair cover with an outfit, a pillow case at night, a towel to dry off after the pool, and at resturants when they drop the temp. Something that you're missing that is a must pack for my husband and I is workout gear. Don’t care that checked luggage is included in price of ticket. I like this idea of three days! Last time i did it was ten days in spring in Ireland. Thought 3 days of warm changeable pieces to make outfits. All fit in a less than 5lbs carryon. I’m now using a two wheel less than 5lb underseater - (💤for Air Canada underseater size still counts as carryon :/ not personal item-annoying) Anyway used it for four cooler days in NYC. No special events. Thought three days of outfits- including travel- days plus two what ifs. Totally worked. Peeve! With greater numbers of people learning to use carryon the bin space is quickly gone! Underseater is the way to go. Down side still::: earlier flight change to a stand by ticket- underseater had to be checked- not lost - easily picked up at carousel as i still make sure i have a bright “marker” attached.🎉

I wore a pair of jeans, a t-shirt, 1 x undershirt (cami), ankle boots, compression socks, cardigan, and carried a lightweight merino wool/cashmere sweater in my personal item bag. I packed 1 x jeans, 1 x trousers, 2 x dresses, 5 x shirts/tops, 2 x t-shirts (1 black, 1 white), 2 x camisoles, 1 x sweater, 1 x cardigan, and 1 x lightweight jacket. Then, 4 pairs of panties, 2 bras, 4 pairs of socks, toiletries, and a hairbrush. 1 x white sneakers and 1 x beige pumps. 1 x sunhat. 1 x mini umbrella. I had my laptop, phone, and charging cords as well as plug adapter. I mixed and matched everything, and still had too many tops. I always attend church and often other meetings, where I need to dress up. I have learned from travelling for over 10 years that I always take more than I actually need.
