In fact, his reputation has taken a hit ever since Jordan won his sixth title and people started to REALLY emphasize championships in the GOAT discussions. Russell to me more resembled Tim Duncan. A great team player who won titles (in an 8 or 9 team league) and was as tough defensively as anyone in his era. But he had the best supporting cast (as did Duncan). Wilt most of the time had scrubs playing around him until 1966 when they finally got a title.

I read his book growing up. It broke my heart watching him be gracious during the celebration ceremony of Kareem passing Wilt's all-time scoring record. Kareem received so many gifts and adulation for the feat. Wilt never got the recognition he deserved, when his career was over. Just because the Celtics beat his team, and every other team in the playoffs, so many times. He should get so much more attention from us and the internet universe.

The reason Wilt gets so little attention is due to the NBA not trying to project it's past and the fact that his numbers are like a video game. The man played against some of the best centers in the history of the league, most of them are in the HOF now, and just flat dominated them all. it's cuz he didn't win as much as bill russell did. like jordan made everyone forget how good patrick ewing, clyde drexler, etc were. those guys were legends but won't be remembered for it because they got overshadowed by all time super teams like the celtics or bulls. allen iverson dominated the late 90s early 2000s and sure we acknowledge it and he won an mvp and was inducted into the hall of fame. but that era will always be remembered as shaq and kobe's. then wilts amazing feats don't have many videos. if we had videos of his 100 point game i'm sure he would be much more acknowledged

Wilt weighed in at 292 starting in 1964, and increased to 310-315 during the Laker years. A man that large, jumping THAT high, playing those minutes, year after year, in CHUCKS- no wonder he was done after a little over 1,000 games. Imagine if Wilt has just been able to wear 1985-vintage Air Jordans, much less the high-tech, super-padded, custom-made shoes that todays players wear. With his amazing physicality, he would likely have been able to play 20 or more injury-free seasons.

William Craig Jr, It is hard to say who is greatest because of slightly different rules in different eras. Let's say Wilt is the greatest scorer and defender of all-time but his coach would not hand him the ball if they are trailing by 2 points with 10 seconds left. The other team would foul him and the % wouldn't look good. The chances Wilt could tie the game is roughly 60% * 60%. That chance is about 36%. On the contrary, the 2nd greatest scorer of all-time, Kareem Jabbar, would be a much better fit than Wilt in a late tight game.

And yes, there IS another NBA player that could have managed (and probably DID) a lot of quadruple doubles - Bill Russell was no slouch as a shot blocker, and in fact was BETTER at it as HIS BLOCKS USUALLY TURNED INTO TURNOVERS, Wilt's usually ended up going back to the same team. @David R thank you for the help and by the way the players heights during Wilt’s era were measured without shoes unlike how it is today. And I guess 11 time champion Bill Russell isn’t good enough competition. Don’t just assume that because it’s the late 50’s to early 70’s that the competition is weak actually look at stats, videos, and read about that era. You'd think he could have gotten more than 2 rings then, considering he played with 6 of the 50 best players all-time in the NBA (at the 50th anniversary in 1996) and his teammates were 24-times all-stars. He also played for a hall of fame coach several years. Russell on the other hand only played with 4 of the 50 best players, and his teammates were all-stars 26 times. He won 11 championships in 13 years. 3 of the years, he was the head coach and a player, and won as many championships as Wilt did his entire career (2).

Wilt won 1 during that same period and only 1 after Russell left. Last I knew, the objective of basketball was to win and winners were the best. Last I knew, the objective wasn't to try to break as many records as you can. That's not the goal of basketball. How far did Wilt's records get him? 2 championships. You'd think if the records were so great, they would overcome Wilt's ability to anger his teammates, get his coaches fired, not showing up for practices, etc. If he was so great, he should have had at least 10 championships. Yet, he couldn't even win with Oscar Robertson and Jerry West on the same team.

That is Russell. That's why Chamberlain himself said that he would pick Russell as the greatest over himself, because Russell made his teams win. Think of it this way. You're tasked with winning a championship as a General Manager and a coach. Do you pick Russell, who would make your entire team better (during the game, during practice, and off-court)? Or do you pick Chamberlain, who is one of the best overall players, but would anger teammates, anger the coach, and not show up for practices?

It's because he was so much better than everyone else that he made it all look easy and it made him remote. It was also his personality: he was very much his own man. He was the greatest player ever, but somehow he didn't quite belong--the game, the fans, the teams, the record books--none of them could really contain or encompass him. He was larger than life. 1:31 That's the correct reaction I feel to Wilt. Wilt has records that seem impossible, physically. I mean, just look at the 61-62 season alone and try to fathom playing that many minutes at that pace and scoring that many points and getting that many rebounds. What player could even try? And then remember that their season was shorter by a month but the same number of games so less rest, more back to backs, multiple three night stretches, and one FIVE NIGHT STRETCH. We have players right now playing in this compressed season struggling with injuries and strain. Any normal human being attempting what Wilt did would have never gotten close and almost certainly injured themselves for their trouble
