I agree. The Witcher 3 for example. But i wouldn't say that video games can reach as deep into your soul as for example a movie or good, old literature from the likes of Goethe, Dostojewski or Shakespeare. If you don't read these kinds of books or no books at all, you probably disagree. And if you read them, but don't understand or don't really try to understand them, you will also probably diagree. I play video games passionately. But i also read all kinds of books passionately. And i gotta say that video games, while played on a screen and not in a (vr) simulation in the future, will NEVER reach the artistic and genius heights of a book like Faust. Thats just the way it is. The fact that more than one person creates a game makes it also harder to enjoy i feel like. Sadly, you can't know who wrote this side quest or this random encounter. Although thats a minor point.

I’ve played video games my whole life. Some of the most graphic and gore filled games ever made. I can tell you that if I ever saw someone in real life get their head blown off or their body ripped in two. I sure as hell wouldn’t stand there thinking, “Oh that didn’t bother me at all. I saw that in a video game once.” I would be mortified and probably carry that with me the rest of my life. If anything has desensitized me to violence at all. It would be seeing actual footage of murders/war in the news. Not a fictional cartoon video game.

I will always advocate that video game can be an extremely beneficial things if used in moderation, and in the case of teenagers, surrounded by adults who understand the risk and help them reap the benefits of it and avoid the bad habits and behavior that comes with it, but if left unchecked or overindulged, it can become more detrimental than beneficial for sure.

I myself if I choose a bittersweet 3 second dislogue choice in the Witcher 3 towards a woman, I have to reload and choose the nice one But that's us, grown ups But I have a 9 year old brother, I'm well aware of how it would affect him to play the same things, and that's the danger of it, if a kid does the same things we do he/she won't feel our regret, because our regret is a product of our personal already educated self For a kid, they won't feel that regret, and if they grow up with that, they won't feel that regret we feel when at our age That's what desensitization is, basically getting used to a certain notion without feeling it

Its not just about addiction. Gaming is literally against the very design of humans. Humans are meant to be constantly active and engage in physical activities or fun team sports with friends but gaming is the exact opposite. It makes you sit in one place for hours and infront of a LED screen. Our inactivity is the no.1 reason for the rise in chronic diseases nowadays including cancer and gaming just speeds up this process. Unless you game like 2-3hrs a week casually, gaming is usually bad for you in every way, especially your body eyes and your mind. Your eyes are also constantly being strained and it’s horrible for them.

Soldiers use video games to display tactics (real world situations) and simulate a combat situation. They still do real world drills with live ammunition all the time and feel the reality of it. its used as a small part in training. Imagine Chess but with imperfect vision, no breaks for turns, up to 200 units being controlled at once, economy management, fighting mechanics, 3 different matchups per race (which are basically entirely different games), and you have to manage a camera. Let me introduce you to Fire Emblem, a highly strategic wargame with permanent death stakes, risk management, set in a long and drawn out campaign where you have to be aware of numerous things at once and think several steps ahead. Or how about 4X strategy games that even involve diplomacy and intensive resource and economy management? News flash: first person shooter games are only one genre in a vast landscape. There are strategy games. Open world adventures. Puzzles. Platformers. Role playing games. Racing games. Simulators. God games. City building. Visual novels, which are not far removed from the idea of a choose your own adventure but with less limitations. It's so irritating seeing people compare a vast array of other media with a tiny sliver of video games as if call of duty was the only game franchise that ever existed. Look, I'm not against MMA, I think that if you sign a paper saying that you're willing to do it, by all means, do it. But when you try to picture another media as desensitized when you lived and still live a life for the sport of fighting, it's a bit hypocritical. Yea, video games create a few dumb kids that, with easy access to guns, end up doing something horrible but they're very few compared to the insane amount of bullies and guys that think they "own the place" because they're martial artists and fighters. Joe has this romantic view that the majority of MMA fighters and aspiring fighters actually control themselves through willpower and discipline but in reality a lot of them are or become violent people because of the mentality needed to compete in the sport. You gotta sacrifice something to be able to beat the shit out of another guy you _don't_ hate, just because he's the next opponent in line.

Of course, this is without mentioning that not every video game is about shooting people and most games that are about shooting people are not romanticizing the violence.

I've gone back and forth trying to reconcile whether video games have been harmful to my life. One thing is for sure, they've had the most impact on me. They are all other art forms combined into one. Art, music, cinema, literature, etc. Halo filled me with more sense of purpose and reverence for humanity than most of my military service did. Deus Ex expanded my critical thinking and awareness of the dangers of multinational corporations and societal implications of transhumanism. I learned more about history from Assassins Creed 2 (let alone the rest of the series) than I did from the entirety of my high school 'education'. Video games have inspired me to travel to D.C., Boston, Vegas, Hoover Dam, NYC, Japan, Italy, Czech Republic, etc. I'm a little nerdy, sure. But it hasn't impacted my social life or success with women at all.

5:32 I love how anyone who is against people playing video games acts like we’re all zombies sitting in front of a screen all day thinking nothing and melting away our brain cells. There’s more to playing video games than you think. I play shooters primarily like cod and overwatch and to be good at either of those you’re thinking constantly. Always thinking about positioning, tracking other players and tracking their equipment and abilities. It’s very tactical and strategic when you really pay attention. Even professional gamers are constantly being shit on by people like this guy for playing video games too much and things like that, but if you think about it the only people who have the fucking time to play video games all day (really meaning like 6-10 hours in a day) are kids or people who are so good at these games that they make more money than people with normal jobs working 8 hours a day. So being a professional gamer playing 8 hours a day streaming every day is NO DIFFERENT than someone working 8 hours doing a desk job. On top of that most of the games people play all day like that are online MULTIPLAYER games where you have TEAMMATES that you have to communicate with. I’m not saying video games can’t be a bad thing and it can’t be abused. There will always be people who go too far with anything whether it’s video games, tv, working out at the gym too much, or eating too much food. But that doesn’t mean everyone who plays video games does nothing, talks to nobody, and hasn’t seen the sun in 2 weeks. Look at nickmercs he’s a professional gamer who is very smart, a very social person always talking to people, goes to the gym consistently and takes good care of himself. People need to stop jumping to conclusions and grouping everyone together for no reason. There are productive people and lazy people everywhere. Try to see things from their point of view. It’s like saying everyone who smokes weed is lazy and are melting away your brain cells yet some professional athletes smoke weed, joe rogan and Elon musk smoked weed on the podcast and they are both very productive and smart people. We would all get along a hell of a lot better if we could all keep a more open mind.

We could watch Saw without a care, because we understood that it wasnt real. If anything its the news that has desensitized us to violence. I started gaming when I was a young teen, I got my first PC and started playing World of Warcraft, I was fucking hooked. I played on and off until I was around 25, I didn't come from then best house hold so it was an escape, I'm small and skinny and isolated myself playing video games for years, I have always struggled with low self esteem and social anxiety, im the youngest of 3 brothers and I'm naturally small and weak, and unconfident, but in game, and online I am whoever the hell I want to be. I even went to therapy trying to understand why I had all of these problems, why I never achieved my goals or stuck to new hobbies or academics, we never talked about gaming or computer addiction or anything. Then I started reading up and seeing Dr K's videos on KZbin and realised like I have literally stunted my development from sitting playing video games, passing up any opportunity to socialise other than to get messed up on drugs or have sex/party, feeling so out of place with normal people who aren't gamers. I never had issues with girls or having girlfriends because I would just meet them when I went out and got drunk or initiate over Facebook etc, but I understand a lot of other gamers in similar situations haven't even kissed a girl by the time they're 25 so I feel for them. Recently I quit gaming for good, I sold my laptop and gaming PC, got a MacBook Air instead. I started playing bass guitar, taking lessons for that with the money Id have spent on gaming, I go to the gym and lift 5 days per week, I went from 53kg to 61kg in the past 3 months and I'm truly not so tiny and skinny anymore for my short height of 165cm. I'm still socially anxious however this is a journey and I don't feel so unconfident about at least how I look and am perceived. It took my over 10 years to even realise what was holding me back, I truly didn't understand or even acknowledge how much negative impact spending all of your free time infront of your PC has. I still catch myself getting caught up on KZbin or reddit, and I constantly try to block myself out with screen time, but its too easy to get back in, I'm practicing the discipline though. Hopefully I will get to a point where I barely even go on the internet to procrastinate or time-waste because I think it's a parasite in society and it preys on those with issues or addictive personalities, or poor habits/upbringings. Good luck to anyone else trying to quit gaming or improve themselves!

People miss the point: novels, movies, tv, and video games are just different ways to enjoy down-time. Reading a novel and playing a video game both require you to be more engaged with the story, just in different ways. Watching tv/movies on the other hand, are just passive ways to relax. There are also video games where you can become really good and win tournaments and a lot of money if you’re into competitive things. Race car drivers and pilots also use them a lot for simulations. "They are just a bunch of 1s and 0s" Joe, you are looking at pictures of physical art. Those pictures are also, in the end, 1s and 0s. Does that diminish their appeal? If you were unaware of the process involved in creating physical medium, would you appreciate them less? What if you saw a digital piece that looked as if it were a picture of a physical piece? It's possible digital artwork does not draw you in, sure. However, I think if you search enough, you will find some digital art that will blow you away! Some really talented people put in a lot of time and effort creating some real masterpieces intended for different purposes - video games, animated films, static art, etc.

Yet pinning two men against each other in a ring somehow contributes to a larger conversation? If anything, you gain the insight that man himself has not changed much since the days of colosseum fights to the death. Gaming literally gives younger males (the primary audience of this podcast) the necessary nature of competing without the negative physical impact of it all. Games connect us in ways unforeseen yet. AI and all of this technology is a new advancement in human evolution. Older men can't see past the stereotypes because their BUILT that way. Imagine if someone from 1500 AD told you that they couldn't believe that men in UFC don't fight to death and instead fight until one gives up. They would laugh in your face and question your masculinity and your "ability to get a girl." South Korea has proven that culture is the key to human evolution. Women in South Korea love e-champs because their told they are great. It's all an illusion like life itself is. It's just a matter of perspective and none of it matters. Humanity is and always was a game of superiority within the limits they were given.

@Herblin Smerblin you don't seem like a very open minded person
@hadiakhtar84314 жыл бұрын
@Herblin Smerblin Well saying that anyone who plays video games isn't an "actual man" is not the most open minded response to a seemingly objective and reasonable statement from that point of view. Just saying it doesn't put you in the best light.
@fireoverload79414 жыл бұрын
Herblin Smerblin are actors not real men? He is a KZbinr and otherwise an entertainer I think that is useful to be able to lighten up someone’s day by creating content. I’m just saying that helping someone’s mental health by entertaining them is useful thus by your definition makes him a man.

You're taking it out of context. I could also argue ALL sports are ''violent'' because they all aggressively pursue the end goal. And I wouldn't be wrong, now would I? Yet it isn't necessarily true AND I sound like a bitch sayin it don't I? Guess what you too.
@DA-nk6gx4 жыл бұрын
@@JohnDoe-qz1ql Not really out of context. Joe said to take a guy like him or others with no tendencies toward violence and have them play a violent videogame like RDR2 and they would not be more violent than before, but, it may effect a kid or teen. Well Joe has been in and around fighting since he was a kid/teen and even though fighting is a very violent sport he has never killed anyone. He has never even physically hurt anyone intentionaly (outside of competition). In fights people often break bones and get bloodied and get head trauma. The people fighting inflict it on one another. In videogames no one gets physically hurt but that somehow will desensitize you more than punching people in the face and head and grappling people with all your strength. Not all sports are violent but sports tend to have violent aspects to them and that's not bad. Its part of what makes them fun and can be done safely while not making anyone into violent mosters, the same logic should be applied to video games. It was just ironic that Joe disconnected violence from one of the most violent sports around that he has been involved with since he was a teen.

Speaking from 22 years of daily video games, I’m 24 btw. Video games have multiple benefits. They teach you strategy, creativity, problem solving, reaction time, hand eye coordination, and build your brain in a way that it uses those skills everyday. As far as building your mind I feel video games are better than their example of books. It’s a thing that you’re controlling and has many advanced mechanics and infinite outcomes. It takes a LOT of brainpower to play high pace competitive games.
