No there were a lot of criticism about the early GoWs, basically Kratos' motivations were all ass-backwards and in the end it just served as a plot vehicle for him to go around and kill entire towns. It was very juvenile character writing, something a 12 y/o thinks is manly and cool. However, the post-Greece GoW is quite mature in writing. As long as you have a fuzzy headcanon of Kratos' past which was written better in an alternate universe. Just pretend Kratos' past is somehow like Vinland Saga, and play the Norse-era GoWs, and you'll have a great time.

It is actually necessary to have hand-to-hand combat that is grounded because we can feel the consequences of the combat because we're close in. We can't grasp the level of strength superheroes have during fights if they're fuckin flying around smashing buildings then come out unscathed, it doesn't feel damaging. If Superman gets stabbed with Kryptonite it feels meaty, Goku punches shit camera is wide it doesn't do much but at least they make effort to draw wounds with characters in anime. Anime is different though they have to take shortcuts with with shots and have fights outside of cities to avoid drawing difficult backgrounds

Strange thing is I bought God of War back when it was released 4 years ago, played just a bit, got stuck early on and stopped playing. I only recently went back to it a couple weeks ago to play it before thinking of purchasing GoW: Ragnarok some time later. I've now finished God of War with only the valkyrie Sigra or whatever her name is to beat but gave up because I just can't beat her. I was hoping Ragnarok would have been on Christmas sale at the PS Store online but it isn't. I have a feeling I'll be purchasing it soon though because it may still be a long time before it's offered at a discount.

I started with Elden Ring which I played for quite a while because I just kept getting lost plus I could never figure out those blasted puzzles on my own. So to play it safe and get maximum of whatever I followed walkthoughs from early o'clock. Only after I beat the game I ventured on my own revisiting various regions which was fine because the enemies (except bosses) in the game respawn. So next I went to God of War 2018 and religiously followed KZbin walkthroughs again for same reason, and thereafter GoW: Ragnarok now playing and enjoying. It's going so good. I think I'm enjoying it more than the 2018 version. About following the walkthroughs while playing simultaneously it's a slow process. I play a part of the walkthrough, shadowing, pausing, rinse and repeat. The walkthroughs are played and paused on my computer and the game is played via my PS4 through my TV which is side by side to the computer. But I prefer playing that way otherwise I'd go bonkers. Works for me.

One of the most impressive things about the game is how if you haven’t played the original trilogy and prequels, the story and messages still hit extremely hard. But if you have played the originals, the story is an absolute masterpiece. The parallels between Caliope and Atreus, the way Kratos has matured, hearing him say to Baldur “the cycle ends here. Must be better” is fucking CHILLS. He quotes Zeus, but puts a good twist on the quote. As opposed to “you will never be the ruler of Olympus” it’s “we must be better.” My god, what a fucking game.

It seems you havent played the early god of war from 2005 and so on to the continuing series in PS2..its amazing..the story the fights the puzzles everything..ofc you may feel like shit now coz of the graphic and who would buy PS2 now..but if you want to play for the story, you can nowadays play it on androids too through PPSSPP emulator..kratos was crazy back then..n now that im finally able to play GOW 4, yet so late but im liking it knowing how his character developed and to see so much upgrade in graphic

It's funny to think how many people love the series now because of the 2018 game and Ragnarok, but they have no idea how much Kratos has done, and how many gods and demi gods he has killed. The PSP Originals and Ascension are still fantastic games, but God of War 1 & 2 hold a special place in my heart.

Well the story is really a huge component of the game. It's literally like watching a movie, or reading a great book. The plot beats are amazing, and you'll get more enjoyment from the experience itself. If you saw a middling movie 3 years ago, you'd probably just state the plot, and spoil it. But if it was like, a Nolan movie with a crazy ending, you'd say, "go see it, it's great." GoW is the same.
