isn't it possible that Voltaire came up with the iron mask as a metaphor for being kept silent by force of law, as well as to hide his identity?

I figure, if it was someone kept alive, it would have to be someone who the king held a significant sentimental attachment to, or a bitter enemy whom the king felt just putting him (or her even) to death would be too quick. Someone the king would want to have suffer. A random valet who knew a dirty secret would just be beheaded and done with.

The prisoner must've been family/a relative or perhaps a high ranking politician that wanted to throw dirt on Louis, otherwise it would be better to just kill the prisoner off somewhere. Perhaps that the real name is written somewhere in a book that's being held behind locked doors in the deepest parts of the Vatican library, where only a few select people are allowed to come.

The fact that they kept him alive for so long is what makes those theories possible. Normally they would just kill someone in that situation, especially in the 1600s it was an absolute monarchy. He must have been too "important" to kill, so instead he was basically tortured for 30 years, sheesh.

We KNOW he was not "important", because of his treatment. A member of the nobility would not have been obliged to serve in prison as a valet to the really important prisoner Nicholas Fouquet, the ex. Superintendant of Finance, and a Marquis, also a long term prisoner of Louis XIV. And secondly when, at one stage, he was moved to his next prison his bedding was sold very cheaply. An aristocart in prison was still treated as one, even as a prisoner. There would have been a very good reason why he was not just killed, we don't what it was, and may never know. However Louvois and Louis XIV had to, to some extent, work within the rules. Remember a "lettre de cachet" had to be sent to the Major of Dunkirk to legitimise the initial arrest, and transfer Eustache all the way across France to Pignerol prison. This is a clear indication that Louvois, for a reason, was working within the law, and the existing correspondence shows he continued to do so for many years.

The French kings had such extensive power, believed to be divinely appointed, that only a truly significant moral or existential threat would have compelled Louis XIV from executing someone who clearly presented a big threat to him. The fact that he kept the prisoner alive hints to me that the prisoner was a blood relation to Louis, meaning that his murder would result in eternal punishment of Louis’ eternal soul. If the prisoner were a disgraced courtier, general or any other subject, no such eternal obstacle would have existed to his execution.

I'm inclined to go with the father theory. In the version I've heard, the poor guy looked far too much like his royal son. The idea is that since Louis 13 couldn't provide an heir, a suitable substitute was found to do the job and keep the royal line going.
@Prince0fm0rbid
@Prince0fm0rbid 3 жыл бұрын
Ummm good theory and all, but being kept alive doesn't actually prove he was a blood relative or any kind of relation at all. It just proves he was important, one way or another, and an execution would've been an extremely bad idea. He could've easily have been a religious figure who they couldn't kill because it wouldvev made him a martyr. We just don't know.

Please read for 1 minute, I beg you God created time, and time has a beginning, middle, and end, and so God has no beginning as time doesn't apply to him before he created it. Please continue reading below. God had to of create time. Think about it, also who created stars and planets if life created itself? Think about it, if God exists he created the whole earth and space, cant he make you sleep and eat less? If you go from sleeping 8 hours a day and getting tired if you sleep 6 hours, to having blessing in your sleep and sleeping less (4 or less hours, personally it gets shorter over time for me as I have more trust in god) it proves a God exists to me. Also it might only be 6 hours for you at first but i suggest taking it slow and working up to trusting that God can make you sleep 4 or so hours Thats what I did. I slept at first for 6 hours instead of 10 when I tried relying on God. Now I slept today for 2 hours or so. I work it up over time. Try it for yourself and see. Just turn off your alarm and trust in God. Please continue reading below. This experience really proved a God exists to me and now I really care for my time as I can utilize it to raise me in the hereafter. It will raise you a lot in paradise if you believe and there is no harm in believing in the one god. You can even believe in your own God(s), no offence but I just want to spread the word. As think about a trash can filled with tiny rocks and you take out a rock every 20 years. All the rocks can be taken out and you are still in paradise. Isn't it better to invest for the next life even if there's a just 20% chance god could exist? And God says in paradise there are things you can't imagine, so a thousand times an orgasm or a thousand times the flavor of your favorite food is a possibility. My teachers taught me you just trust in God and get what you believe. Nowadays I sleep 30 minutes and eat a few bites. Also if you try to get blessing and start sleeping less, be sure to share this comment to your family and friends for their own good, just show them this comment :) invitation to god is a great deed And let them know to share this comment as well Please see below to copy this comment. I also advise sharing this comment with your social following or even running ads to it as invitation to God is rewarded as if you get multiple red camels if you convert 1 person and the equivalent would be multippe red BMWs in our time so imagine getting 100 thousand dollars for each convert. Please click the link to copy and paste this comment and feel free to edit it however you please: pastebin.com/EyD6CBRW But first see our site below. If you want to learn more, click this link to a site that proves which God exists. Abookwithfacts.com This site includes my cure to corona I also try to dedicate the extra time I have to god as I would be sleeping anyways. God really loves you helping people so I suggest you get the app Freerice which donates a bowl of rice when you answer 10 vocabulary questions. Of course you dont have to 🙂 but I would suggest it as it would raise you in the next life and better it Thank you for your time and have a great day 🙂 Please I beg you for your own good, believe in God

Now, let's get realistic: Solitary Confinement has some pretty drastic effects on the human mind. After the 5th year kept in such a manner, Whoever the guy was, he would be a gibbering Lunatic. The notion that Anyone would listen to, or even Understand, a word he said after his mind degraded in the dark, is highly unlikely. Meaning the containment procedures and secrecy had little to do with What he Knew, and Alot more to do with Who he Was. Now, consider Just How Many people royals killed or had killed with little to no regard, and the chance of it being anyone who wasn't a Direct Blood Relative of the king is slim to none. And now, how many royals killed their siblings? Many. How many killed their Fathers to ensure their own rule? Quite a few. But yknow who Often (but far from Always) escaped the chopping block? Children. Specifically Male children, legitimate or illegitimate. I think the man in the mask was the illegitimate Son of the king, who after his discovery, even likelier still the illegitimate heir to the throne who prior to being discovered had taken up the Cloth (priest or monk or friar etc) as it was Very much so frowned upon to Kill holy men. Furthermore: the soundproofing. Sure, if he knew some specific secret it'd be lost to the madness. But the constant reciting of holy texts and prayers, the kind of thing you could Only learn if you were a) Literate and b) A Member of the Church? That kind of indoctrination sticks with you, and in an Era when Literacy was almost entirely reserved for the Nobility OR the Church? That's a Clear signal to anyone who hears him saying that is a Nobleman, and Likely a holy man. Worse so if he both Looked like AND sounded like his father, the King. Just my two cents worth.

To me, the biggest question is why, as was said, a king didn't just make him dead. Although I wasn't alive at the time, I am told this was done on a routine basis, both publicly and privately. Therefore, examination of that king's personality and beliefs which may have discouraged execution would be the most productive area of research.

The poison story during Luis XIV's rule is also one the most interesting stories of the late medieval times. It basically started bc of a woman wanted her fathers money and blew out of proportions to span the entire French nobility and court in the late 17th with a lot of nobles killing each other. A lot of shit happened during the Sun Kings reign.

A few theories: It's no secret that celebs use fake names for hotels. What stopped people from using fake occupations. Could the occupation listed be there just to throw others off? If it was someone involved in the poisonings, with that amount of effort in securing the prisoner never escaping, could he have been the one to create said poison? This would explain the need to keep him locked away to not only ensure he could not do damage to those in authority, but would also ensure he could not share the the recipe to enemies.

Speaking of famous prisoners, do Charles Bronson (the crazy guy stuck in UK solitary for 47 years, not the Death Wish actor).

I always keep poking my phone to see whether there's a notification from thought2 . Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction, but I guess this whole "man in the iron mask" is made up, well maybe a gladiator or a dangerous warrior.

Serious question: Was the alleged entry found by rioters at the Bastille “Prisoner # 64389000, The Man in the Iron Mask” simply made up by someone and not really found at all? If there’s any validity to this claim, then apparently there was someone in an iron mask. I know it’s mentioned on the movie, but according to some writings it did exist. Sincerely curious.

Yes, fiction to support and justify the riot. The Bastille was never full of prisoners. It was not built as a prison but as a defensive work for Paris.

@@danMdan it is said they did find his skeleton inthe bastile with his mask still on,however it can't be true because the buried his body in church nearby and destroyed his head when he died,a beggar confides this.

@@scallywag4978 it has all the smell of a fairy story. Remember de Junca wrote in his prison diary, which still exists, that the the Man-of the Mask was most certainly buried,
