You can’t go on a power rant then say your happy to still get paid by that community 🤣surely the message should be we need to build our own eco system so that we aren’t reliant on “old money”. Our community now has such a diverse pool of different classes who, if banded together could make old money obsolete. His message is powerful but ultimately come with no solution, especially when you have Doritos ads on filthy and pushing google pixel every week. @@Huwandahero His actions do align with what he’s saying. He doesn’t hold or create space for people who speak negatively about black culture. Particularly those who don’t belong to the culture. Need to have a convo about whether or not ‘culture’ actually belongs to anyone. To be so ingrained into believing culture is something that needs to be adhered to and protected is limiting and more time it doesn’t even exist in the way in which people think it does. To think ‘your people’ have your best interest at heart is also naive, as is highlighted by knife/gun crime statistics in both the US and UK. i.e just because you have similar life experiences to others doesn’t mean they have an incentive to help you - more time the victims of murder are family members.
@hannah600003 ай бұрын
The only point I will address is the culture does not belong to people point. Not all culture belongs to everyone. It’s groups and individuals that create cultures, and they determine what that. Also, it doesn’t imply that culture is immovable, nor lacks evolution. People who argue culture doesn’t belong to anyone have no idea of self or other people different to them, from my experiences. Separately, you can choose to adhere to the “cultures” or “culture” you come from, but that does not imply that “culture doesn’t belong to anyone”. Peace!

I enjoy the podcast and I've been listening to the Reggie Yates podcast since it started in lockdown and I think Poet it out of line for the rant. Context: I'm 31, black, male, a dad, a partner and from Birmingham. If Owen says he doesn't rate MJ or Kanye because of their lifestyle and statements but can admit they have been big parts of his life, I don't get the problem. I've seen the episode in question and there is no disrespect for anyone's culture and Owen states that's his personal thoughts (ie not an attack on our culture). Reggie and Bubba also state they don't check for Kanye West either, but that's not been flagged as a cultural attack or some sort of "holding eachother back" sense. I don't get how not liking MJ or Kanye is a race/cultural thing? As before I'm a black man who fell out of love with Kanye when he said slavery was a choice. I understand/know race and culture are 2 different topics but I've included both as I'm listening to Poet rant about a white man attacking our culture. Just a chat point, if this comes across as disrespectful/inappropriate/insensitive in some way, it's not intended Enjoy your day and I'll be here for another episode 🙋🏾♂️
@datjulesyboy3 ай бұрын
I completely agree with what you have said. I’m a day one listener of the Reggie Yates podcast also, and was baffled to hear that Poet found what Owen said disrespectful because I don’t think (even hearing the podcast snippet in this episode) Owen was referring to race in any way. Kanye has done and said questionable things, and it’s fair not to ‘check’ for someone after having an opinion on said questionable actions. It doesn’t always have to be about race and I think Poet just wanted to have an example to support his argument, but this example didn’t make sense.
