This episode, junior doctors are working in the competitive world of surgery. "it's not easy, not everyone can be a surgeon. We're like Top Gun." Young trainees have little room for any mistakes
There are over 63,000 junior doctors working in Britain’s hospitals. As young as 23, they are the foot soldiers of the NHS. They welcome us into the world and they will be there at the end. But, they are working in hospitals that are treating more patients than ever before. Everything is stretched, we haven’t got a lot more to give, and something needs to change.

The title is kind of ignorant. It was a great doc though. We need safer working practices for surgeons. If they’re working 24 hours straight, that’s bad for their concentration- I wouldn’t want surgery from someone who’s been up a day straight. If we have them work normal hours, or even 15 hours let’s say, we might have more people attracted to being a surgeon and the problem will help solve itself.

With an attitude like this, no wonder the NHS is having a junior doctor shortage. Perhaps they should rethink their archaic attitudes towards women in surgery, the lack of sleep for doctors, and how surgery time is allocated. I suppose if enough patients start dying from gross mistakes due to exhaustion, things might have a chance of changing.

Why are these surgeons expected to perform major surgeries while exhausted. Does health and safety, as law and also enforced in all other walks of life not apply in medicine. It’s not fair on the doctors nor the patients. Truckers are not allowed drive more that a certain amount of hours and they must stop. Ordinary citizens are told they should not drive while tired. It’s irresponsible. Bus ,coach and train drivers are controlled by law from driving for too long. It’s an absolute scandal. The Govt and dept of health are to blame as ithey obviously do not care about the physical and mental health of their doctors nor by extension the patients. This has to stop in the best interest of all concerned

I really felt bad for the doctor when he was giving that end of life conversation to the son. I'm still in medical school so my knowledge of how to give such conversations is still theoretical. Everyone is really missing the point of the video. The reason the title is what it is is because the episode is focusing on Surgury specialties and the lack of support for home life and children for doctors. This can be especially hard for women who are mothers, as having child care is expensive, even for doctors. It is especially hard for women in this specialty due to the insane hours and lack of support.

To speak to them in that manner and come out with that statement " I CAN BE PRETTY NASTY YOU KNOW" was dam right DISCUSTING and BULLY TACTICS! SHAME ON HIM. He ABSOLUTELY NEEDS TO LEARN MANNERS for 1 and also somebody else with more PROFESSIONALISM THAN HIM should be TEACHING HIM exactly how to have some BASIC DECENCY in how to have the CORRECT FORM OF COMMUNICATION SKILLS when talking to and teaching members of our future staff. He should have been REPORTED. If this is how junior doctors are being spoken to and treated on a daily basis, theres no wonder why doctors quit their jobs or end up following in the same foot steps and this kind of communication overlaps onto their patients, I.e US PATIENTS. I'm sure if he was working in the PRIVATE SECTOR he certainly would have refrained from those tactics and if not, then he has ZERO BUSINESS in having the privilege to teach/talk to junior doctors at all.

Only 2 sentences of maybe a 5-minute talk don't mean anything. Nobody looked upset and in finance, the army, or any other competitive field, people have sometimes a hard talk to keep them sharp. As for Nasty, it doesn't say by itself anything, because the context was removed for dramatization. Nasty in the sense of talking seriously, yet in a loving and supportive way, in order to help them in their development, is something different from nasty in order to hurt someone's feelings. The way how this documentary is filmed is to enhance drama. Many subtle things that could give a totally different vibe have been taken out, so with a grain of salt. Most programs on TV are made like that, especially the contest programs that are focused on dancing and singing. Just take this program with a grain of salt.

I think a lot of how successful a doctor is regardless of gender is what their style of learning has been when they grew up. If they are from an educational environment where thinking outside the box and critical thinking is encouraged, then I think this goes a long way in problem solving in clinical situations. If a student has learned in a ridged rote style learning environment then thinking outside the box can be anathema to them. Obviously gaining the crucial bedrock of scientific and clinical knowledge has to be learned first but then they need to be able to think flexibly and problem solve.

I dont know about other countries but in Australia female doctors have reasons that block them from extra training to be surgeons. Men. Constant sexual harassment, bullying and deliberate sexual assault are reasons cited by the doctors. The mentoring Head Surgeons play a critical role in training and career progression, and mostly likely sit on panels to address such discrimination A few years ago, a female surgeon actually suggested to continue surgical training that you may as well "give in" to sexual demands, because every obstacle will be put in your way, if you resist.

Maybe a bit late. In Australia and U.K. both leading conservative governments, claim to support universal healthcare, because it is popular amongst the citizens. However, it goes against their ideological grain. First they start out reducing funding, then outsource non-medial staff. Next, they try to overwork clinical staff or offer contractual employment. The services start to decline, so an outside logistics analyst is contracted ,with a large fee to enquire into management of the system. (In Australia the firm is usually has financial or political ties to the governing party) . More cuts and privatisation is recommended. Our Medicare pathology services are becoming restrictive. Less access to costly screening procedures or obstacles put in the way of frequency. Then the idea of co-payment is introduced , but rejected by the people so statutory changes are made regarding access to ancillary services. IT IS CALLED DEATH BY A THOUSAND CUTS. OR FUNDING TO FAIL. This the neo-liberals playbook. The road to privatisation.

I have had a surgeon throw a scalpel into a clock, and I had one doctor who messed up, and he threw a pair of dirty s scissors that hit my hand, and I looked at my hand and it was bleeding so I cures him up and down and the poor man had to go through blood tests for hiv and hepatitis for a whole year with me thank goodness he was married to the same women for over 50 yes and nothing was found and the doctor got wrote up for that one.

@@venus_envy Didnt you watch the video? One of the main points was about a women that left surgery so it would be possible to see their child. Of course women are most likely better than men in many ways in surgery, but they want to continue having a family as well. And a womens responsibilities has been going on for hundreds of thousand years. Even though society is now forcing a change for equality that doesnt mean it makes (men) women happier. Stats speak for itself as well when less than 15% of the surgeons are women. Why is that in a country where women has an advantage in the educational system?

It's a shame it's not more attractive to stay and work in the UK. They do however pay outrageous sums of money to train at university and then while still in training do a lot of work in the NHS before they become a fully fledged doctor. So I suppose it's not totally one sided. You know it's not like they get trained for free and don't do any work and then leave to work in another country.

Australia has health for all and if you don’t want to pay for private health on top of Medicare levy you can go to a public hospital and pay nothing Levy is about 1.5% which doesn’t cover healthcare. Canada has a similar public system but no private health.

Australia Medicare levy is 2% of salary. It covers emergency treatment/hospitalisation, but does not cover non-urgent surgery, for which you go on a wait list or pay to go privately. Canada's system is similar, having both public and private health cover.

Honestly, senior surgeons being rude is just unprofessional. As a senior doctor or senior anything else for that matter, you need to be in control of your feelings. If it happens here and there in a stressful situation, ok, but to make it your character is just childish. Also, people who are scared are more likely to make mistakes, so it's even more important to not create unnecessary fear. But people are dumb sometimes.
