I also think the spook factor of Metroid: Fusion adds to its perceived difficulty... Being chased makes players panic and causes them to make more mistakes. Seeing Nightmare's face melt made me super uncomfortable as a kid... but the worst (read: best) thing Metroid: Fusion did was destroy the sense of safety you feel when riding an elevator. Elevators in Metroid games are supposed to be safe spaces and Fusion took that concept and turned it on its head.

I get what you mean about the fake lava/acid bits, yeah, but credit where due, there's enough of a hint there to let you know something's not quite right. In the instance you experienced, there's a gap in between the one block to signify that it's not quite as solid as it first appears. It's the kind of design that's not unfair or unreasonable, because it plays to the strengths of Metroid: exploration through observation and experimentation. :3 I don't know if this only applies to Dread, btw, but I believe the revealing explosions from Missiles are coded the same way as Morph Bombs, so if you're struggling to reveal secrets, try using Missiles? It's been a hot minute, so I don't recall if that's how that works. But yeah, the X-Ray Scope from Super Metroid was really pretty useful and I thought it was cool the way they used it in Metroid Prime; I actually found myself using it more in Prime than in Super Metroid considering in the latter I would just use Bombs & Power Bombs to reveal secrets...never did like how the X-Ray Scope forced you to stop dead in your tracks just to look around...the scroll also felt too slow for my liking, hence why I'd just bomb everything. XD

Fake lava, specifically fake lava in vertical areas, is a classic Metroid thing. You'd know cuz it was in vertical areas - the game was hard coded to alternate between horizontal and vertical navigation whenever you went through a door, and the lava's damage was actually just hard coded for the bottom edge of horizontal areas. that said, this game doesn't always respect that, but you have already figured out to test it.

@@Megamanexe Indeed. It might tell you the basics in the instruction manual, or tutorials. The fake acid pool, at least, had enemies come up out of it, which doesn't happen anywhere else. The fake lava pool does have enemies in it...But the same type of enemies can be seen in other lava hazard rooms just chilling out in the stuff, so they don't serve as a good marker. At least Super's hints about fake floor hazards had them look a little bit different as the hint to clue you in.

Metroid Zero Mission is what I consider to be the easiest Metroid for sure, Fusion absolutely has some challenging boss fights. But Zero Mission's Hard mode is very enjoyable; there's way more enemies, they move way faster, they do way more damage, energy tanks only give you 50 energy instead of 100, and missle tanks only give you 2 missiles, not 5.
