This was such a helpful video! I agree that a lot of people view GAD as if it was a diagnosis of “a lot of anxiety.” Excessive generalized worry is the disordered mechanism and anxiety is the outcome.

I came across this video and you explained it so well. I was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder this year and never even realized I had it until my therapist explained it to me. Like you said, I just thought it was my personality. It's so obvious now, every session I come in with a list of topics that has been worrying me. I greatly appreciate the diagnosis and everything that therapy does.

I love your videos so much. I find that I am addicted to worry. IDK if it is GAD. I just move from one worry to another. I think that when one problem is solved, I won’t worry anymore, but I find something else to worry about. I do believe it has to do with staying alert and not being blindsided.

No, I haven’t seen it. I’ll definitely check it out, I definitely need to find free outpatient care here where I’m at, as I’m no longer living in Alberta and I’m in the US now. I was doing cognitive behavioral therapy and talk therapy that seemed to help me a lot. Now that I don’t have it I’m definitely having a hard time with my GAD & my C-ptsd being off my meds sure doesn’t help.

How about anxiety specific to work as well as insomnia ( not sure which came first). My anxiousness revolves around these 2. I have symptoms like chest pain; neausea . I wonder if you would classify it as GAD or just situational anxiety? Psychiatrist diagnosed it as GAD but psychologist said it's not GAD. Any thoughts?

Dr.Nader what makes people worriers? are some of us just born worriers is it all a learned trait I’m just curious I know some of it for me was learned but it kind of almost seemed automatic when I was put in an uncertain situation
@DrRamiNader
@DrRamiNader 3 жыл бұрын
There are likely multiple factors, including genetic predisposition, early life experiences, disruptive and chaotic environments, behavioral modelling, learned behaviours etc. I don't think people are intrinsically born as worries, but it may feel that way because they have worried excessively for much of their lives. When I am working with a client, we don't spend a lot of time trying to figure out where the worry came from (because that's often an impossible task), but rather, the focus is on what is keeping the excessive worry going.

Can GAD or chronic anxiety cause anhedonia? I ask because I was prescribed a beta blocker for high blood pressure and the first dose I took made me feel somewhat good. I could concentrate in conversations. As the week progressed I noticed that my worry or concentration was more was better. About 9 days later I felt very good. My mood was great. So I was just wondering if anxiety can cause anhedonia.

There is certainly a relationship between anxiety and depression. When people are experiencing high levels of anxiety, it can lead to worsening mood, which makes a lot of sense.

Hi, do you find that a period of anxiety may also lead to the amygdala becoming more sensitive? I am finding that, following a recent spike in my anxiety, I am now less tolerant of certain worries and thoughts I used to have no trouble with. Would the way to manage them be to continue diffusing them one by one?

@@DrRamiNader thanks, I think regardless of the biology of the matter, clearly sometimes your anxiety can peak due to certain life events such that previous negative emotions can resurface and with greater intensity.

Worry. Restlessness, fatigue, etc. are the manifestations of anxiety. Anxiety itself is caused by traumatic experiences mainly during childhood. Your explanation about anxiety is rather superficial as it does not include what anxiety is, its causes and treatment. You focus was only on the symptoms of anxiety like excessive and prolonged worry.
@DrRamiNader
@DrRamiNader 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Yonas - You are correct in that the focus of this video was the symptoms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder, because that was the topic of the video. I have posted numerous videos on anxiety and have a 14-part video series on the treatment of GAD, so that is a topic that I have covered in great depth in other videos. I would disagree with your assertion that anxiety is only caused by traumatic experiences mainly during childhood, as there's no research to support that conclusion. While some anxiety can be attributed to traumatic childhood experiences, that is certainly not the case for all anxiety or anxiety disorders in general.
@yonastesfay4779
@yonastesfay4779 3 жыл бұрын
@@DrRamiNader Thank you for your clarification. I was not aware of your other videos. I still maintain that anxiety is caused by a single traumatic event or by a series of traumatic events( complex trauma). When the cause of the anxiety is unravelled, the poignant reaction to the event(s) is different from the current anxiety feeling. The reaction to the traumatic event is characterised as a combination of extreme hate and fear which is manifested as anxiety when the initial reaction is repressed as it is too overwhelming. When the person has come to terms to the trauma by the process of mental exposure and assimilation the anxiety diminishes and gradually vanishes. That is why knowing the cause of the anxiety is critical to the treatment of anxiety. I do not mean to challenge your vast knowledge and experience. I am just sharing my little knowledge with you and the others.
@DrRamiNader
@DrRamiNader 3 жыл бұрын
@@yonastesfay4779 Thank you for your comments. There are many different theoretical orientations in psychology. What you are describing is a psychodynamic approach, most commonly associated with Freud. My training, expertise and knowledge is in cognitive behavioral therapy. I am unapologetically a CBT psychologist and all of the videos I make will, therefore, be focused on CBT understandings of anxiety, depression and trauma. That's not to say that psychodynamic approaches are irrelevant or meaningless, but that's not my world view or expertise, so I stick to discussing what I know and what is supported by psychological science and research. So we can agree to disagree about the nature and cause of anxiety, but I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts and views.
