Another way to "combat" this is to simply embrace it: yes, you will cringe in the near future and ask yourself "what was I thinking?" Just accept it.

so refreshing to hear a fashion girl talk abt this, i've been thinking it for ages myself - i fear many "trendy" ppl nowadays lack this kind of longer-term perspective and firm sense of identity with their clothes💔my partner and i call it "trend soup" when we see someone wearing 3+ trends in a single fit, lol

Recently heard of the concept of a "fashion victim" and it feels to me that outfit blindness is a sister concept to it.
@Chillwave64 ай бұрын
yeah, probably a better word for the concept since people both insist on negative terms but also wanna avoid stuff. like "fashion victim" would imply the person is... a victim to fashion somehow, so blindness just means they're not aware of what the current good fashion is which makes more sense

one way i try to combat this is i only save pics on pinterest that inspire me to style my already existing clothes in a new way . so i’ll look for photos of things that are similar in shape , texture , color etc to what i have & save outfits with those pieces as opposed to outfits w completely new pieces - that would be just me playing into the trends . i’ve been watching for a while but realized just now i forgot to subscribe , i luv uv ur calm energy in these vids :+))

I don’t think I’ll ever wanna b absolutely critical of old outfits even if I cringe thinking about it. I will think, it was a moment, it was a purpose, it was fun, etc.. different ppl end up liking it … it just depends. I don’t think ppl recognise how extremely common outfit blindness is. Fashion in the 2000s was despicable - some genuinely like it but if I was an adult @ the time, I would’ve believed ppl’s sense of fashion was messed up. It was the trend 2b outfit blind. As well, Ppl who don’t think about fashion critically r simply fashion blind in the sense they have no personal sense of fashion.

As a young millennial, I've felt like Gen Z have had "outfit blindness" ever since Y2K came back. Just as it looked rubbish on us when we were young, it looks rubbish on the youngins now too lol
@notmyopinion49815 ай бұрын
YES OMG! I am an older Gen z and I always thought the low rise jeans or skirts were horrendous! And all those bright and unmatching colors of Y2K make me cringe so hard. Like it just isn't cute,I am sorry. The wide jeans, I can get behind, skinny jeans are still my go to NGL, but both have their shining moments. But low rise anything , needs to die! It never looks better than high rise! Even if you have a flat belly, it really just doesn't look as flattering as a high rise skirt or jeans... I will die on this hill!!!

As an old lady I'll say, I've been wearing the same basics for 20+ years (shape, fit, style etc not the same pieces, mostly) and occasionally I will add something trendy, but only if it fits my personal style, or can uplift what I am wearing. Wasting your money on trends is fun in the moment, but buying things that suit you and fit well will always be best and more sustainable for your wardrobe and wallet.
@nataliagrunwald81396 ай бұрын
I get really annoyed when something I genuinely like wearing becomes a microtrend 😭 I have a really colourful, sort of maximalist style since middle school and now I see pieces of clothing that I own trending eg. the shirt with ribbons in the middle and big hearts at the bottom, I had it made by a tailor and now I see every "wear this trends for summer" girl has it, like pleeeease I'm a star, I don't blindly follow trends

What upsets me about this video is that most of the styles you were talking about that are supposed to be unique to contemporary fashion are actually things that have been done in the past too! Like the football jerseys with the cutesy outfits, for example! To me it’s just a continuation of 2000s fashion around the time of the world cup in 2006. Same with the huge rings! They were popping off when I was a kid and when they became a trend I thought it’s just the 90s nostalgia that people have been capitalising off of. Just like they do with all the movie rereleases.

But if i take the idea of the outfit and recreate it in my style, now it suits me and I'm happy with it. I look back on my 2020 photos and think some of the outfits were cute but not all of them were, but i was happy in the moment and that's what mattered. I personally like to look at 2 factors when deciding wether or not i want to hop on a trend 1) Did I like it before it was trendy? 2) Do I already have it? Obviously if you said yes to number 1, i think its totally cool to go for the trend, but make sure to do it in the way YOU envisioned it and not necessarily in its trendiest form. If you said yes to number 2 its totally cool to go for and try, but you might end up hating it later down the line, which can inform you the next time something similar is trending on wether or not to get it. If you answered no to both questions but still want to participate in the trend, wait until it goes out of style and people start hating to see if the trend genuinely changed your mind on a style. If it goes out of style and you find yourself defending it anyway it probably was right for you, but if you find yourself hesitating or agreeing with people, you likely never liked it to begin with. Remember a costume is not about what you are wearing, but how you are wearing it.

Def not ignorant to say you can tell. My friends and i sniff it from a mile away. Anytime i look online or shops.. so glad im goth lmfao…. Although I had to come to terms to not listening to the goblins in the ear in my younger years to waiver from my staple colours and cuts. My wardrobe is supremely cohesive and I buy less due to it being such a concrete style / concrete in what I gravitate towards. Which I am told it is more so the corporate goth look. My outfit blindness existed in my teens and my early 20s. And it is really in my face how bad some peoples outfits look. Ill fitted in an unintentional way due to a desperation to be apart of a certain trend, people adverse to the concept of an iron. It goes on… it looks really bad. And might I be the bold one to say a majority of these resellers with a following, all look the same. And the “let me style you” / bundle outfits under a “core” aesthetic.. all look like garbage. But to each their own, more so it is jarring to me when they are my age or older and doing these really bad outfits, especially really cheap. Along with the amount of product waste that happens due to the turnover. The amount of videos I watch that are these people in those spaces that in one video go on and on about quality over quantity… and get rid of half of their closet. And then the next 5 uploads is their new hauls.. its insane. Its all an excuse to make space for more garbage they wont like a month from now, because it is more often than not these people do not have a concrete identity and hope to find themselves in these tidbits. It is like another video essay I had watched the other day. In talk of all these core aesthetics in which we live in a fast paced world with a horrid economy in which, rather than being the thing itself. Aka having the hobby that coincides with it. Like you mentioned, the football. Or they used the example of tennis core.. the horse girl aesthetic.. ballet etc so on so forth. Rather than affording to go into the hobby and having the time for it. People more so than ever are gravitating towards looking the part of the thing they wish they could do. It leaves behind an emptiness that goes unfulfilled. Or it is a short lived trend in your wardrobe rather than existing in your identity.

Sometimes I just go in public naked. You won’t have outfit blindness if you don’t wear an outfit.

Trends are fun to try but they are more like catalogues to see what you like and what suits you instead of having to follow them. I preffer to do something out of trend. Your outfit could be the next trend 🤷♀️
