Your first oil change is the most important oil change!

Every new diesel I purchase I change the oil at 1K, 3K, then again at 5K. After that its every 5K. Oil is cheap and I want to get all the metals out especially as things wear in.

I did my first oil change on my 22 f450 6.7 at 5k miles with no issues i now have almost 54k 70% of it is towing heavy and and 30% just normal driving/daily

I always follow the break-in recommendations. Changing the oil early the first round might not hurt. But then again, it might hurt if they're using a special break-in oil. Changing that out too soon would be detrimental for the breaking in process. For that reason, again, I always follow the break-in recommendations.

Im about 99% sure Ford doesnt use any break in additives or break in oil. Even if they did, it would have served its purpose by that point. The primary purpose of breakin has been to seat the piston rings. With modern rings and machining techbiques the break in process is pretty minimal.

@@03c5z Right, but that's only another reason not to change it early. I think the habit of changing early the first round is dated and came from old grampa's stories of longevity. It really doesn't apply much anymore to mainstream vehicles.

Good Morning, great topic. I have a 2023 F250 that just hit 1001 miles and was wondering the same. However I did buy their maintenance program and they did not say anything about seeing me after my 1st 1000 miles, more like they will see me at my first oil change at 7500 miles. If i get any alerts saying, hey you need to service, will gladly report that back.

Quality of oil is most important. According to University white paper I read, Oil does not lose its lubricating properties but does lose its additive properties or becomes contaminated. Modern quality oil is superior to the oils of the past and does not need to be changed as often. Also, a quality filter is very important and is the main reason Ford does not recommend changing the oil more than what they recommend. Fleet owners of heavy equipment test the oil to determine change cycle. It should be noted that the Railroad companies use re-refined oil with appropriate additives. Stick with the Oil change mileage certification label that Ford recommends, and thing will be good.

If you think oil lasts longer with low compression piston rings. You will eventually have an oil burner of a vehicle. 5k oil intervals is what is recommended by professionals.

2k seems fair and 5k every time after that. Full synthetic motor craft oil and filter in my opinion. No towing first 1k and then let ER rip!

I do the same. First change at 1000 then send it. Also never get an oil change at the dealer.

Just talked to “service manager” at my local dealer today about my 23 F-450 HO today and he said 7500mi and use ford oil and ford filters ONLY. He even mentioned put the pedal down and send it 😅. I picked up my truck in Michigan on Monday and drove it home 1350miles to southwest Florida the next day. Even bought a 40ft trailer and put a truck body flatbed on the deck after. It got some heavy hills and pedal usage on the way home. Had 2 times where the transmission has a little “slip” or “jerk” going up Kentucky mountain hills. It’s sitting here at home with 1450 now. I’m debating on what to do.. I think I should change it seeing that it saw work right out of the gate. Let me know what you guys think

It might not say it but I always perform an oil change after initial break in on any engine.

I've had trucks where I was meticulous on oil change and more then I needed... additives, etc... they didn't last any different then just normal oil change.. My new 23 I changed it at exactly 5k... the Oil life monitor said it still has 33% left.. now due to cost and the larger capacity oil filter for longer life... I'll follow the oil life monitor.. which it estimates 6800 miles left, as of now... so that would be a total of probably 75 hundred + on an oil change... and I am religious about the maintenance but why change at 3k or 5k if your wasting that oil life.. it's still good for another 2 or 3 thousand miles.... and even after that, if you got an analysis, it's probably still good.

5k for the first oil change. Then every 5k till you hit 20k. then switch to synthetic and you can change every 7500 after that.

Why not just change the filter it should catch most of the debris.

Don't be silly. Not providing a manual is ridiculous. And you are only referring to the owners manual, not the actual service manual. Who is going to sit in their car and "read the manual" on a Sh*tty little monitor. Who is going to do that if their battery is dead? Who is going to do that if the battery is disconnected. Just plain STUPID and insulting.

for a diesel engine, doing a 5k break-in oil change makes sense. If running lots of miles on the open highways and towing, then I'd go 10k oil changes no worries. If my diesel was a city truck, then oil changes at 5k. Nice F-450!!
