Do you HAVE to give two weeks notice before quitting a job? 🧐

Two weeks notice isn’t always a rule 👀
Usually, when we think about quitting a job, we also think that means giving two weeks notice - but, do you have to do that?
Not always! You should absolutely look into your country’s laws, and your contract, but often it’s actually just an expectation and professional courtesy vs a true rule. Now, if you had a good relationship with your company and/or if you’d like them as a future reference, then you might want to go ahead and stick with the two weeks. But, if something comes up, or you don’t feel so inclined, you could probably leave sooner.
When we left our last jobs, we actually gave a full months notice, to make the transition process easier for the company. We weren’t in a rush with our new role, so we had that flexibility. So, it can go both ways!
Do you usually give two weeks notice when quitting a job? Let us know!

I got told when I went in after my grandma’s funeral that I had explicitly told them about and asked if I needed to fill out any paperwork to which they said no don’t worry about it. Anyway, I go in at midnight the next weekend and they told me they assumed I had quit because I no call-no showed even though A) I’d been there longer than any of the managers or current employees and had never done that and B) they had text message and email proof that I explained what was happening and they approved it. Anyway, I show up that weekend at midnight and they tell me to go home, instead of bothering to send me any notice at all so I didn’t have to flip my sleep schedule for 3rd.

@@brianvalenti1207 Just make sure you tell your employer what your goals are.... yes to an extent, but an employee is not told most of the business decisions that are made and also sharing plans that are more ambitious than your employer has in mind for you becomes a problem. If the employee can't easily tell if the employer is doing something that they want to follow then the employer is a bad leader.

@@williamjohnston580 If your goals are more ambitious than your employer can handle, then I wouldn't tell the employer either. That also means the employer has zero opportunity to help you achieve those goals, but that does assume the employer would want to help you. My problem with your statement is the word "follow." If you're following, then a poor leader has left you behind. I'd only expect that from entry-level employees. Someone qualified and knowledgeable in their field often knows what needs to be done better than management and it would be foolish for management to ignore recommendations from that expertise. Management exists to support the employees.

@@brianvalenti1207 Good point, yes that makes sense. As an Engineer in training working to get my license I can do just about every job equivalent, and in my specific fields much better. But I cannot operate legally as an independent yet. Another question: is an employee expected to provide management with "free" business advice on how they can increase profits/job efficiency, bring in more work from the expertise of an employee and if so is that value only fixed to an hourly rate that only allows you to eat and pay rent? My biggest concern with being an employee is not feeling like winning, knowing I'm getting a fraction of large value I bring, not just my hourly rate profits, but by bringing in large projects for the rest of the team to benefit from by impressing clients.
@brianvalenti1207
@brianvalenti1207 Жыл бұрын
@@williamjohnston580 Most engineers make more money than their friends, so it isn't usually an issue and engineers mostly compair themselves to other engineers. Engineers offer advice out of professional pride and expect the employer to implement it out of respect. Engineers always believe they're more valuable than they actually are, because they never take the cost of nonsense into account. Dealing with people is expensive and an unsolvable problem. Engineers hate that, but the ones that can handle dealing with people end up owning a business.

I gave 2 weeks notice when I changed jobs. My supervisor was so mad that I was leaving that she "fired" me the next day and said she'd pay me through the end of my notice - except she basically just paid me my earned vacation time which they'd have had to pay out anyway if I'd worked through the end of my notice. They shorted me almost 2 weeks of work with pay but I didn't have to work for that backstabber anymore, so it worked out. They'll do whatever they can to screw you, so plan accordingly. I contacted my new employer and they were thrilled to have me start early.

If you are moving away, going back to school, or possibly moving to a place interconnected with your current employer and there are no hard feelings, then sure give as much notice as possible. But if you are quitting because they suck then slowly bring your personal items home. Write down any important phone numbers and contacts you may want. Bring back any company owned items and put them in your desk or locker. Then quit without any notice and any fashion you want. You definitely get points for style 👌 I have quit both ways. It just depends on the situation.
