gdc here. Thanks for solving another puzzle of mine. In case you are wondering about the difficulty: It used to jump around between 2 and 3 stars for a while and is currently on 3 stars. But be prepared, that you'll have to do some sudoku in this sudoku :) Thanks everyone who tested this on the CtC discord!

@@zincfive I personally used R2C2=R1C5=R3C8=3 in my "intended solve path" but it is essentially the same logic (with R2C2 instead of R3C2 as a starting point) and everything else resolves naturally after that in a very similar fashion.

When Simon pencil-marked the 12345 line, but did sudoku on every column _except_ the one that already had a 1,2,3 and 4 in it, it caused me serious emotional pain. :)

Love how Simon says, I'm sure people are yelling at the screen. At the beginning of this Channel when Simon and Mark were doing and teaching 'classic' sudoku's, One of the rules was when you fill in a number, check to see how it relates to the pencil marks. Now he races off and misses the easy ones LOL. I'm not even going to attempt some of these puzzles, but it makes me feel better when I spot an easy fill. 😉At least I can con myself 😁

I am sure most of the times I catch something that Simon doesn't is because he starts the logic and then I follow it to the conclusion and sometimes he does not. I am not coming up with the logic but at least I understand it I guess.

Exactly this! I think with other variant sudokus, I often struggle to find where to look or what to use for the next step, and I get stuck. But with fog of war, and I often find myself not having to get hints from the video, and occasionally even finishing them faster than Simon or Mark!

Good for you! Similar here, I try shorter puzzles too, especially Mark's. I'm pleased with myself that I got the break-in, and made some good progress before I got myself mixed up and watched the rest of the solve. Poor r2c3... is pencilmarked 12345 for what felt like ages while having 123 and 4 staring at it in column 3. And then it gets resolved by an X-wing on sixes in columns 1 and 2 instead of simple Sudoku... never change, Simon, even if I have been shouting at my screen multiple times during this solve.

For me it was his refusal to fully pencil mark column 6. He had two corner 9's in cells that could only be 789 and marking that would have given a 789 triple in row 5 leading to the 3 in column seven without any of the complicated stuff he ended up doing.

Now we need to work on Dieneke (Di-na-ka). Stress is on the first syllable. Di from "divorce", na from 'nano' ka from 'calender'. And Joost. A double oo in Dutch sounds like the 'oa' from 'goat'.

50:54 One way to use the deduction that the line with an end at r3c5 must get its 5 from box 1-since the line already has three cells in box 2 it can only ever extend at most 2 cells in to box 5, which means 5 in box 1 must be in columns 2 or 3, which combined with the 5 pencil marks in box 2 leaves only r9c1 for the 5 in box 3...

Another cracking FoW puzzle. Not hard, but not one you could rush through either, which is quite a nice balance. Although you were missing some sudoku-related things, you weren't too bad today. Your worst one was that you had a cell pencil-marked 12345 in box 1, when there were already 1, 2, 3, and 4 in the column. This was probably the most blatant naked single in the history of the channel, but you missed it. Early on, once you'd revealed the three line tips in box 8, you could have asked where 1 goes in the box. It couldn't go on the bottom because it was pencil-marked in R9 in box 9. It couldn't go in the top, because it would have needed one of 2345, and the other cell sees all of them, so 1 had to go on the middle line, making it 1-5, and that meant there had to be 125 in R8 and 34 in C3.

While I would prefer it if you could pull all the old apps into the new one so there was just 1 single app for all, I do like the fact that at least on android you've been updating the old apps. The first one was classic which now finally has not just the new interface, but more importantly the smart hint feature (it was the only app that didn't have this). I noticed that killer sudoku has been updated and I can actually play it on my tablet now. Before it was impossible because in landscape orientation (which is the only way to use a tablet) the candidates window overlaps with the grid. I did check to see if miracle sudoku got the update a month ago. It didn't. Any puzzle with killer or sandwich clues is unplayable unless they have the new UI (like the killer app does). I believe last I saw it was just killer and classic that have the new interface. It's also a huge improvement not being limited to just 3 colors anymore. Many of the puzzles become difficult with only 3 non-overlapping colors. So yeah it would be nice if you could update them all. But ultimately I would love it if there could be 1 single app to rule them all. Then I only need 1 icon instead of like 10. lol

It's interesting to watch Simon over time, how he often misses easy sudoko that mortals like us spot right away. It seems to me that some of the quick gains just advance a little, any way, and he's using that time to understand the next bits of logic. He's not concerned about speed, and he gets through some wicked puzzles that about a few handfuls of people on earth can solve. Another way he has gotten so good at finding logical paths is that he trains himself by being reticent to pencil marking, again honing his ability to follow the logic and not get bogged down doing eliminations. Mark tends to fill time by pencil marking to see what shows up and trying eliminations by chaining, so I think he's much quicker on a lot of puzzles and he's good at competitions, but I'd bet there are puzzles that he might get stuck on, where Simon would sneak through with his logic. I'd LOVE to see a series where Mark and Simon try the same puzzles, separately, I'd be it be really interesting to see their differences in style side by side.

I think it's because Simon went from solving regular, "simple" sudokus in newspapers to doing viewer-made ones, that have become more and more complicated as time went on. As a result, he had to rewire his brain and learn different ways of solving puzzles. This probably led him to see the more obscure paths first, and then the straightforward ones.

At 24:38 Simon asserts that the renban line in row 9 is a straight line but for the life of me I can't fathom the logic that allowed him to make this deduction. Can someone please put me out of my misery? TIA

If the renban went up, it would peak out of the fog in R8C2; but since there is nothing visible, the line must continue straight into R9C1,. In other words: it's the "nothing reveal" after placing the 3 in box 7 that allows you to deduce that the last movement of the line must be to the left.

"...yeaaaaaah, if it was a guess I got it right, and I'm gonna keep it XD I think I started counting all my 789 triples that I had all over the place... maybe... I don't remember. IM STILL KEEPING IT! Later edit: oh good. I had the 2s. Whoosh. Was deserved

Also me: *illogical logicing* but... but lines all need 5! This line needs 5 and 6, and yes, it could technically steal from next box, but the next lineALSO needs 5 and 6, and while I am guessing it might steal that from another box, the line in THAT box still needs a 5, and it can only go there if everyone is stealing from everybody else, and that would inevitably break sudoku rules! ...I know it makes sense in my brain, but sometimes I wait for Simon to explain something so my brain makes sense in English.

58:27, i thought he was going to use the cell I saw to complete it because it is on the Renban... R2C2 must appear in box 2, but cannot repeat on the Renban line, so it must go in R1C5 Then where does that go in box 3? it most go in Row 3, and be in R3C8. Since the options for R2C2 are 1, 2, and 3, and the options for R3C8 are 3 and 4, it must be a 3!

When will the Line Sudoku pack be out on the Steam version of the Cracking the Cryptic App? I would love to buy and support the channel :) I would always talk to my housemate about the puzzles and it was only recently she started watching too and now she rants at me just as often. Feels good to share the joy.

Finished in 37:43. Nearly made a wrong assumption because I didn't realize that 1 had to be in one of the 3 lines in box 8 and it could NOT be in the top line which made the 1 be in middle line. Fortunately, I caught it because I kept running into the problem that the top line had to contain one of 789 which rules out 1 from that line.

51:00 it's absolutely amazing that no line in r2c6 puts 5 in the bottom left corner. By the series of two questions: 1. Where does the renban starting at r3c5 get its five? 2. Where is the five in column 1?

No, the exciting thing is that 9 is knocked out of row 1 in column 3 or 4: I can’t remember which one now, but he was just discussing whether 9 could go in row 1 of these columns.

@MrGrog90 - wow, that was a quick reaction from you. I discovered my error the next minute I posted it and immediately deleted my comment. Yet you managed to notice and even reply to it! :) I was simply a bit frustrated that Simon did not go the same route as I did (as always he ignored easy write-ins just to get to the same result via complex multi-step logic) and at one point I just decided to comment without thinking too much about it. Great puzzle, enjoyed it a lot!

Thanks! I know what you mean: There was some low hanging fruit in row 9 and row 5 that simon didn't pick up. The funny thing is he saw all the clever steps immediately only got stuck because of simple stuff. I'm on the "never change simon, we love you for who you are" camp because I really enjoy seeing how he approaches things. But it can also cause a wired mixture of frustration and envy. Glad you enjoyed my puzzle! For the column 8 logic you were commenting on earlier, the intended path was to realize that (a) the renban can't turn right and (b) 9 must be on the top of the column.

@@MrGrog90 Exactly. That's the way I did it. But in order to force the 9 into top cell, first you have to rule it out from bottom which Simon refused to do, and that's exactly what caused my frustration - "you should not touch the renban before you haven't solved the 9s!" :D

Did you get a bit lucky at 33:55 that the line in box 2 did not go down into box 5 and end up in r4c6? It's not so hard to see that it needs a 5, as you say shortly thereafter. Still, for the purist...
