This was in Conway's rock-a-billy days. Later in life he fully switched to country. He was one of the best. Many number 1 hits at one time more than anyone else.

Conway Twitty is a legend, with over 40 #1 hits. He started in the 50's and worked with Sam Phillips, the producer who recorded Elvis, so there's definitely a deliberate similarity. This song was his first #1 hit. He evolved with his country songs, starting in the 60's. He's a deep rabbit hole, especially his duets with Loretta Lynn.

Conway is one of the all time greats! This was before he changed to Country Music. In Country Conway could get away with lyrics no one else could. The live version of Goodbye Time is fabulous. Conway always left everything on the stage. He also did duets with Lorretta Lynn. He left us too soon. He had 18 number ones and passed in his 40s. You've Never Been This Far Before, Slow Hand, Tight Fitten Jeans, and so many more. Yes in this song I do see the similarities with Elvis. Thank you Harri! I love Conway!

8:45 pm CT, 9/10/23, I was only 9 years old when I first heard this song in 1958 and loved it. It’s one of those rare kind of songs, you like the first time you hear it. I’m close to 75 now, and there were quite a few years, that I didn’t listen to music anymore. But after I retired, and since the internet became so common place, and I discovered music apps, where I heard all kinds of long forgotten about songs, It’s Only Make Believe, is one of the many that I fell in love with, all over again, and just as much as I did when I was 9 years old.

Well, it's a nice review of Conway Twitty's performance which deserves to be in the pantheon of rock-n-roll history. Like so many other songs, we often imagine how it would have been performed by Elvis who clearly would have knocked this song out of the park. One can only imagine how Elvis must've reacted when he heard this song and whether he considered recording it as he had done with several songs by different artists. Had Elvis recorded it, it might have been a somewhat weird situation in which Elvis would be perceived as imitating Conway who was imitating Elvis.

The first time I heard this song on the oldies channel here in NYC I swore up and down that this was Elvis. I was actually shocked when the DJ said it was Conway Twitty. But a lot of singers in the late 50's after Elvis went into the army were getting popular sounding like Elvis like Eddie Cochran, etc.
@Airihi3 жыл бұрын
The group backing him on this song would also back Elvis Presley on his songs. In his older age, Conway had mentioned that the head of Sun Records, engineers, managers, and pretty much everyone else at the time was telling him he sounded just like Elvis and wanted him to continue making songs like this but he wasn't interested in it. Everyone thought he was crazy and throwing away his career but he wasn't interested in mainstream rock, he was a country singer and wanted to have fun. He also reflected on his favorite songs of his being his humorous songs saying they gave him the greatest joy and he would have prefered singing more of those kinds of songs and said he wanted to have fun with his music but the world (music fans) wanted him to always be so serious all the time lol I always had the feeling that he and Roger Miller shared a similar love for life and humor.

Elvis Presley's uncle ! LOL !!! I actually met Elvis Presley's uncle, Vester Presley, in the Elvis gift shop across the street from Graceland, many years ago. I was on a south-bound vacation trip with my mother, several years after Elvis had died, and we had stopped in Memphis, Tennessee, to see Graceland. We crossed the street to visit the gift shop, and there inside the little shop sat Vester Presley in a big old chair (almost like a throne ... LOL). We purchased a book about Elvis (I believe it was written by Vester), and I walked up to his uncle and asked him to sign the book. And, believe me, Vester had none of Elvis's good looks! LOL!

Don't think it was "a coincidence" that Conway Twitty sounded like a superior Elvis imitator at this moment -- when Elvis had been in the army eight months by the time this disc was a hit at the end of 1958. The public was hungering for a good Elvis sound. Elvis hadn't had time to record really good material when he was caught in the draft -- with his manager self-styled "Colonel" Tom Parker insisting that he go into the army for public relations reasons -- and scored just one Billboard number one disc while he was out of the public eye over those two years' of enlistment.
