You are right about the amount of air projected making louder sounds, but that's a different thing. You just gave me more of an idea of what's happening, though. There *is* resonance from the chest and little or no nasal resonance, in the way American English speakers particularly, speak. In Japanese language, there is a lot of nasal resonance, an almost humming effect like a kazoo. This could also affect how much air they can reasonably push while singing. I'm no expert though, just guessing.

I'm not Japanese, but I can think of a ton of reasons why. One big reason is because we English speakers speak from the chest, but Japanese people speak from the throat. Another reason is singing from the chest sounds like shouting, and Japanese people are very polite and reserved, so shouting would emphasize rudeness. There is still powerful vocals in some types of Japanese music, but a different kind of power, involving intense operatic vibratos.

mind you: i'm not at all instructed in singing, but i did some compulsory choir sessions back when i was still going to conservatory and the director used to say the vibrato is very much comparable to a trill as we know it from certain instruments, but that in order to do it with voice one needs to widen ones throat and use the diaphragm and all that other stuff ...and sing in chest voice. is there any truth to that?
