You know Chewy thats a good analogy. I noticed a shift in my game once I became less needy and more self fulfilled. The whole expectation idea is always a distraction and turns into a performance anxiety if you let it. Let go, have fun. Thanks Chewy.

A date? I think a black belt in bjj is a more achievable goal, and I'm not good at bjj... that says it all.

This fear of rejection and failure has really been messing with my takedown game. I’ve known the remedy, but really needed to hear more details from someone who actually practices BJJ!

Great advice about not caring too much regarding winning/losing, but also: “it’s not about how much you know, it’s about how well you use what you got” - love this...

Just did my first comp last weekend and totally blew it. The silver lining though is that I learned some things and came up with training goals.

Rofl, watching this made me realize why I compete the way I do. When I compete, everything sucks. I complain about everything, the breakfast at the hotel isn't good enough, the tournament isn't good enough, I'm wasting my time coming to this shit, I just want to go home and take a nap, etc, etc--no matter what medal I earn that medal is immediately discarded as below me, even if it is first place. I just talk shit about literally everything and point out all bad shit and diminish everything, but I do it in a joking manner such that everyone ends up laughing about it and understands that I'm not (completely) serious. In a way, I'm completely the opposite of you. I'm not there because I want to be there, I'm there because I have a "duty" to perform magnificently for all the spectators--after all I have to "enlighten" them about what "real" grappling really is. rofl. I always knew that I did that to kinda elevate myself above the tournament, but I never really put it together with insecurity and being desperate. That's quite an insight there, and I love it.

This was my issue entirely when rolling in competition. Multiple accounts of me being down by 2 or so points with 30 seconds or less and then throwing all caution to the wind and start putting the attacks on my opponent. Some times I was able to steal the win, but many more times I was in the process of finishing a submission and ran out of time. It's a hard mindset to get past.

Is there a point of a new white belt going to open mats? I feel like whenever I go I don’t learn anything and just get beat up for no reason
@crythicalyt8392

most people are bjj nerds! So you should ask them a couple things “Hey could you let me know if i’m doing anything wrong” “is there anything you noticed i could have done better?” by allowing them to be your teacher you’ll find yourself being allowed to work more because the higher belt wants to find holes in your game so they can teach you

Been there myself. Keep going. Ask questions. Start in a bad position and work your way out. Over and over and over and over again... It gets easier. Oss.

I am 7 mo in. I go to every open mat I can. I went today and one of our 3 stripe blues said he was proud that I get more annoying every time he rolls with me. (Which apparently is a good thing.) The open mats help me learn how to transition between techniques, and they give me a chance to roll with people who may have a different approach to similar situations. I love them!

Yes, every roll is a learning situation. Ask questions, if the open mat your home gym the guys should be open to teach you a thing or two; guest gym is hit or miss.

I dno what it is, with some of the guys at my gym I can go like 80% and not worry about hurting them (I am not even big 73kg so not really going to be able to hurt them lol) But with others I play slowly or just hesitate to engage properly then just end up defending literally no idea, some people have said I need to be more aggressive but then find myself making stupid mistakes lol.

Nah. If go back and watch some of my videos I cut a bunch of weight for a comp. And instead of just going crazy on eating I've kept the diet much more strict with my macros and then slowly working my way back up. Just trying to keep the diet tighter and be leaner.
