TEDx Talks

Күн бұрын

Mr. Khurshed Batliwala emphasized on education as a means of knowledge and not employment. He also talked about doing things differently and having faith in our decisions even if they go against the flow.
“Twenty five years ago no one had heard of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. The whole world stood on the other side and said you are mad. I said yes, but I am happy. Be happy don’t compromise on that. You have dreams, you have visions, you have hopes don’t let people around you kill that for you. And that’s an idea worth spreading”
With a postgraduate degree in Mathematics from I.I.T., Bombay, Khurshed Batliwala is a senior faculty at the Art of Living. Mr. Batliwala is a firm believer in the power of self-identified aspirations and this led him to follow an unconventional and challenging career path.
He has been instrumental in designing the Youth Empowerment Seminar (YES!+) series that inspires the youth to break free from the shackles of society expectations and follow their dreams courageously. With this course he aims to propagate the vision of the Art of Living, which is to see a smile on every face on the planet.
A blend of intellect and innocence, mind-blowing wit yet unconditional warmth, he continues to be a favourite among youth, and is committed to utilizing every moment of his time in enriching the lives of people around.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

India followed British education system which was designed to develop Baboos(clerks) and Sepoys (soldiers) not the thinkers. Today, Indian system of education is an Industry, that churns out baboos and sepoys. Every great Indian scientist and mathematician who invented or developed something extraordinary, was educated in the West, a free world that teaches you how to think outside of your box on your own.

yes they do have better idea than him, unlike him..... problem is that who ever challenge us to think against our belief is disliked and I am no exception but... but I and others like me will try and retrospect; not everyone does that because its not in their syllabus... to retrospect :(. Anyway hope everyone... everyone regardless of religion, caste, creed, country and political views get together then this world could be still a better place to live.

He really brings up an important point that needs to be made aware of, as an American I can say that I see this problem everyday but i now realize how big it really is. He is right in the schools they just teach you to remember, the teachers are hardly ever interested in actually showing you why something is.

The explanation for why -2x-2 = +4 was explained very well in a video lecture by James Tanton in his lecture series on Algebra for the Amazon State University. In his lecture he demonstrates by drawing rectangles, which unfortunately cannot be done here in a comment. Let us take the simple problem of multiplication of two numbers, say 12 x 15 It can be visualized as the area of a RECTANGLE whose sides are 12 and 15 respectively. Since this is pretty straight-forward we easily know it is 180 sq. units Alternately we can view one side as (10+2) units and the other side as (10+5) Units. So in multiplication we get (10+2) x (10+5) = 100+20+50+10 = 180 sq.units …. (A) NOW TO KNOW WHAT IS MINUS X MINUS Consider 12 to be written as (20-8) AND 15 to be written as (20-5) So what is (20-8)x(20-5) First 20X20 = 400. ………. (B) Next -8x20 = -160. ………. (C) Then 20x-5 = -100. ………. (D) NOW LET (-8)X(-5) BE = ‘m’ without assigning any sign. Now totaling (B), (C) & (D) we get 400-160-100 =140 So TOTAL = 140 AND ‘m’ and we don’t know the sign of ‘m’ But from (A) we know 140 AND m = 180 So. m = 180-140 = +40 So (-8) x (-5) = +40. And two minuses when multiplied gives a plus.

Really great person in India. I probably seen him once or twice in BLR AOL ashram. My roommate Robin was really a fan of him... I always thought about -2 x -3 = 6, why? His explanation is simply awesome. I thought before that, if we say "getting" as +ve, then "not getting" will be -ve. Now, not of "not getting" will be "getting" according to logic, so in this case it will be +ve. If i have 0 apples, and i have to give 2 apples each to 3 persons, then i will have -2x3=-6 apples. Now, if i have to give 2 apples to -3 persons, then it does not make any sense. It can only make sense, if negative number of persons means they don't take apple, but actually give apples. So my giving of apples becomes taking of apples (-2x-3=6 in this case) in my part.

I was getting high marks with bad handwriting when I was memorizing things. But when I started evolving and understanding things guess what happened. It took longer to get passing grades. Degree was received after years of completion of course. But you look at ancients to modern coders. Memorizing has been handed down and the need of the hour is that. Once all components are coded, they will need to till the land. Until then memorize.

Real learning was hard earlier because teaching job did not attract the best talent. It is possible now because knowledge is available online from various sources (online courses, online books, blogs, Wikipedia, youtube videos). e.g. Numberphile is a good source in youtube for Maths lovers.

yeh!you are right! what kind of education we are imparting to our kids? My son aged about 6 years studying 2nd standard is so vexed with his school, he is asking me why the school makes him to sit 7 hrs? he was just looking on the ceiling immediately after rising from the bed, i asked him whether he is afraid of school. His immediately response "not fear, am angry".I really got surprised about his clarity and the distinction between fear and angry. and his resolution plan , do you know its surprising, he will become as big as Hanuman and throw the school into space.

In mathematics concepts are develope from one another. In my last year's at school I sat up front so I was not distracted. The teacher would develop a concept that would send My mind swirling and singing. I loved this but that all happened in five minutes. The next 30 I sat and listened to rambling. I went home with a friend thatscoredhigh, and try to relearn what had thrilled me. It was gone as he didn't dream mathematics, he learned It like a musical score and finally failed but not as a musician.
