Comes from paganism. Imagine burning for eternity for a 12 to 100 year lifespan.

Hell is not confined to specific definition of a place of eternal torment with inextinguishable fire.. Other interpretations of hell are abyss/pit which can be found in the book of Job(which is much older).. God doesnt send people to hell.. it is the wicked who choose hell..

Conceptually, you can't have heaven without a hell. Where would all the ass holes go, they can't be in heaven with me? Hell is for other people.

@@SapientCephalopod I hear you, it is just that the idea of people going to heaven has not always been a thing, either. The punishment option came first!

@@JenniferBirdPhD That seems strange. I would have thought once the idea of a "Soul" or "Eternity" occured to humans, afterlife disposition would have required two options from the get-go. If only hell came first, what happened to good people after they died? Frankly, I don't believe in any of it, but reincarnation is the only "afterlife" notion that makes any sense at all.

Sounds like Sartre.

@@SapientCephalopod the concepts of soul and eternity were not solid concepts in biblical times, either. But during the rule of the Seleucids over the Jews, with their harsh treatment, the idea of people getting “pay back” after they die started to be embraced in Jewish apocalyptic thought. 2nd century BCE or so.

@@JenniferBirdPhD I guess this whole converstation is on the assumption that we are just addressing "Judeo Christian" afterlife mythology. I assume that other cultures that predate "Judiasm" had concepts of both heaven and hell where a different sequence of developement occured? Egypt? Summerian? Harapan? I appreciate your engagement with me on this.
