DO YOU NEED a 1000cc motorcycle?

It actually makes me excited as I only own a 125cc, and recently road a 400cc dominar (single cylinder) on the freeway for about 300km. Now I was cruising at 130km/h and was still able to accelerate from 120-140 with ease in 6th gear, with plenty of passing power. Of course we always want more because...well it's fun lol. So I'm super eager that there's even more 😅🤪

Just moved from a ZX-6R 04 to a GSX-R1000 K3 and the latter feels so much better in the turns, like it's on tracks. I find myself carrying a bit more speed than I would on the Kawasaki, despite a still half broken left femur - or rather half healed. Fuel efficiency is also better, 130 miles before the petrol light comes against 100 for the 636 (but it's probably because its servicing was long due). The ZX-6R was running -1+3, so the acceleration was pretty good. The 1000 K3 matches it but with a lot more oomphf; it doesn't like to be kept in low revs and always seems to beg for more.

Ive got a 1000cc now and as much I love it i definitely cant use the old excuse that motorcycles are so fuel efficient! Mine absolutely guzzles that ol 98 prem.

Interesting video. But I still wouldn't swap my Speed Triple RS for quids. I just love the appearance, sound and quality of ride. Plus everytime I walk into the garage it still gives me the WOW factor which makes me realise how lucky I am to own one.

Craig Mason huge fan of the speed triple RS, when we did the review on the RS I didn’t want to give it back haha it has so much character, a lot of fun and the looks are to die for. You are a very lucky rider

After getting my 1000 cc fix for a few years, I reckon all you need (for road) is 120-130 BHP with a light weight machine. Plus its cheaper to but & insure etc. - WIN WIN situation.

Well want and need - however what U don't get on a small capacity bike is that safety net of a bit of extra punch when U need to get out of harm's way. We have all had that car that's to close to avoid that decided to move and that extra bit of punch can get U away from that danger a tad quicker. Would I go back to me ninja 250 that I owned in the late 80s probably not but but God I had fun on that little bike, travelled all over NZ and yes it was light, and fuel efficient did pretty much anything I asked of it but I'll take by S1RR all day every day! Just did a Sydney to Melbourne run through the snowies and while I had issues due to the fires, it was a brilliant trip on every twisty road I could find!

grungysquash1 interesting comment. I would like to dive deeper into this conversation. “Having that extra punch” in what circumstances would you need that punch to avoid a situation? Is it power you need or is it reaction timing of the rider to avoid a sticky situation?

@@6tdegrees In reality it's situations that can change, two examples come to mind. Obviously situational awareness is critical and reaction time is also key. Example 1 - Car on side road indicating to turn in front of U - so U watch it as your approaching at 60, and sure enough at the point where braking is not going to stop an incidence it begins to move. Now maybe the car will stop maybe it won't but a quick squirt gets U away from this danger zone . Example 2 - This has happened to me - filtering through stationery vehicles on the RHS is a truck he turns his wheels to the right away from me to give me some more room as I approached from the rear I could see the driver in his mirror looking at me. As I filter through at slow speed approx half way down the truck I see the front wheels rotate toward me had he intentionally turns his rig to close the gap and force me into the car on the LHS. So I grab a fist of throttle and shot through that gap before he could complete that action. You could say why are U filtering next to a truck?? Simply because I can!! I've ridden bikes my whole life never not had a sports bike started with a 1986 BR 250, then GPX250, CBR600, GSXR750, GSXR1100, T595, more GSXR750s now 16 S1000rr which is an awesome bike. Still have a T595 in bits! Power can be dangerous but it can also get U away from a developing situation.

grungysquash1 that’s very interesting. Now from my assumption from what I have read involving those situations a “a quick tap from the throttle” still could have been avoided and by the sounds of the position you were in, it would not have mattered what size motorcycle you were on, it could still be avoided by a simple counter steer, however I can not analyse the situation without seeing a visual perspective of what exactly happened. Is it legal for you to filter through traffic at 60? (Km/h or mph?),what the road rules are in your country? Was there an empty lane beside you where the car pulled out in front? How much space was there? Did the truck pull to side because a car had merged into his lane and what if that car merged across 2 lanes? If you had sped up to avoid the situation you would have just placed yourself in more danger by speeding towards another merging vehicle. A lot of questions come to mind and methods that could have been used to avoid the situation you were in without placing yourself in more danger. Speeding past a vehicle would be my last priority unless it was safe enough to do so.

Ha ha you guys are going to have so much fun . I say no you don’t need 1000cc to have on the streets. I think we all learnt that one when the Honda Grom Came out. I started on a YZF-R125 some of the guys are used to ride with gave me shit when I first got the boys would leave me for dead on the streets of course even on the 300 and till we hit tambourine mountains and I caught them or not only did I catch them but I have a took most of them because those things on the amount of light nimble perfect . Are used to call my little red rocket I had so much fun on these days arise and MTO7.Although I’m not licensed to ride in the Thousand . Even though I threw it out great two years ago I still have written 1000cc and 1000Plus cruiser My dad bikes As fun as they are I’m still 100% believe in you don’t need a big Bike to have fun

I’d be interested to know how you’d feel after doing the same comparison, but with something like a 675 Street Triple R instead of a ninja. Would the R3 still come out on top?

BigCarKilla having ridden the R3 for a couple of months now, Ive had no trouble keeping up with other riders on various motorcycles like the MT10, MT09, KTM 790, Ducati monsters, S1000RR just to name a couple and going down the mount R3 has the biggest advantage being so light, it’s so easy to chuck around the right corners, but as we said it’s the straight lines where the bigger class motorcycles have the upper hand.

BigCarKilla again the weight difference between the two bikes and the narrow tyres on the R3 compared to the street triple R, you’ll carry more speed into a corner on the R3 but coming out is a totally different scenario.

how are the power modes for zx10r? i heard that low power mode is 60% of the bike, is it like 118hp??

I don’t. That is why I traded my R1 for an MT09. Much more suited to my skill level and more comfortable on distance rides as well.
