Interesting. Been thinking about getting a Kallax shelf for my modest but growing LP collection. So been watching lots of KZbin videos about the shelves. Stumbled upon this video which was very interesting and will be watching more. I checked out the website of the maker and now understand how these are installed. I didn't get it before, but it makes sense now. I was pleased to see that they are made of poplar wood now - or at least some of them are, which seems to be like a good idea. Thanks for the video.

This product is definitely something I can use. I'm TRYING to take a break from collecting new records and focus on equipment and accessories. These lil dudes may be exactly what I need to keep my records "in check". I also prefer to have my records protruding slightly from the shelves just like u had mentioned. I never actually noticed this preference before until u had brought it to my attention. I gotta check out this product fir sho. Great topic. I did actually my own because I wanted a backside that I painted black, have a white Kallax, so I added a piece of wood to push the records to the satisfactory range and added in a led strip on the top of each cube and a thin cable line between the cubes. Ended up pretty nice and I'm happy with it. Not too much work for a small amount of money.

Can you post a back photo that shows the spacers in use? Okay, I reasoned that they lay down flat. The thickness of the plastic is enough to stop the album from sliding up over them? Thanks.

Have a better method for “backing” Kallax shelves. Cut a 1” PVC pipe just slightly smaller than the cube opening, cut pipe insulation foam slightly longer then the cube and slot the PVC into the foam insulation sleeve. Then, take a sheet of particle board, I use the “marker” white board where one side is glossy white, and cut it to fit the back side of Kallax. Attach using strong double sided adhesive tape, or small trim nails. Once you got your backing board attached, slide the foam insulated PVC pipe that you just cut to size, into the cube until it hits the backing. Rinse and repeat until all cubes are complete. Took me less than 10 minutes per shelf.

I had a backer board cut to size for my Kallax cabinet, painted it then glued and screwed it to the back of the cabinet. Cut to size pool noodles to fit tight, no adhesive necessary. Works great plus I added the wheels that I'm not sure Ikea sells anymore that were designed for the Kallax stuff. Cabinet is stiff and can roll about my space.

I was looking for a solution like this a few years ago and went a little different way to solve it. My Kallax cubes sit vertically and abut on their long sides. Using some 5/16" wood dowel rod I had laying around I drilled the side of each cabinet approximately 2" up from rear of each shelf surface and passed the rod straight through from side to side. After confirming the fit, and trimming the ends so the rods were flush or a little recessed in the cabinet ends I painted them black to match the finish. A small black piece of tape covers the rods on the end of the cabinet that can be seen, and the ends that face each other on the inside aren't going anywhere. This method provided a solid barrier so the records can't slide out the back of the cabinet, and I don;t have to worry about tape or glue lifting.

I use Frost King Vinyl Foam Self-Stick Weatherseal bought rather cheaply from Home Depot. It is 3/4-inch wide and 1/2-inch thick. They come in 10-foot rolls for about $2. They must be cut into 13 1/4-inch strips before lining them up and patting them down in the back of each Kallax self. You need one roll for 8-9 cubicles. They are very effective (as long as you don't use wildly excessive force against them). Even better, they can be carefully and slowly removed without pulling off any Kallax finish. So far, so good. However, the product that you reviewed is intriguing and worth checking out.

I had purchased a denim box insert for my records, so I can pull my records out and flick through them, but the weight of the records caused the box to lean to a side. I then tried the woven boxes that IKEA sell. Sadly a 12” doesn’t fit, so now I just leave the records directly in the kallax. Great idea to keep the records lined up

I've been using a prefinished MDF door stop molding from Menards (1-1/4" x 3/8") that I screwed into the shelf, but I like the idea of using 2-sided foam tape instead. A 7' section of that molding costs about $5 US. At $3 a pop, these are a nice alternative to the molding - no cutting and drilling needed. LOL about the beer can problem. That could be a drag if someone got clumsy even if your records are sleeved.

Having lots of Kallax myself: just take a very thin plywood in the size of the kallax and spax it on the back. Spax it on the frame and spax it on the thinner shelfs. Then your LPs stop at the plywood, plus your Kallax is much more stabil. The costs should be around maybe under 10 bucks. Cheers from germany. P.S. i would never let my covers get over the bottom/edge of the shelf, like in the video, 'cause everytime someone or something passes the shelf, could touch the covers. I like my covers in the back of the shelf.

Good idea about 2 years ago I went to Lowes and bought some grey foam tubing used for insulating cooper tubing. Cheap and easy to cut to size and cannot damage the album jacket.

My Kallax/Expedit shelves are assembled with wood reinforcement on the back, and the 2.5 - 3 inch gap in the front doesn't bother me. Interesting product, though!

About the only downside to the BHG cabinets is they are a bit thicker on the exterior shelves with takes up exterior space(floor space) in the room. They don't seem to benefit from the thickness, where as adding a thin full back or maybe some type of metal corner bracing would keep it from accordianing.. I've got a 5 cube BHG running vertical and it's definately thicker than my threshold 4,6,8,9 cube versions. I don't keep records in it, mostly towels, but I do like the pool noodle, pipe insulation idea , as long as you stay away from the pipe insulation with the adhesive on the split part (it might grab a jacket pressed into it every now and again). It's too bad Target changed the early Threshold racks that had little shelf pin holes in them so you could split the cube and place have size fabric cubes in them for accessories . Now they seem to all be just 13 inch cubes.

This is off topic. I got into Vinyl a while back and enjoy listening to it and all the micro adjustments we have to make (turntable &catridge adjustment, ,amp,speakers etc)to get the best experience.But I wonder sometimes, if I should maybe gotten into cassettes again. The fact that Vinyl trims of the top and bottom end of the frequency range is a bummer and I know due to the physics of space and needle blouncing off etc... But if you want pure music, then isn't the cycle usually -> Master Tape - > Reel tape? So Reel tapes are magnetic media and you don't do a RIAA curve on them. Yes cassettes are inferior to reel tapes with the hissing noise etc.. But aren't cassettes really preserving the original music as it was recorded than Vinyl?

Vinyl reduces those frequencies when cutting, but brings them back with the RIAA curve. They also sound way better than cassettes in my opinion.

I’m having trouble understanding how this works. So with the adhesives stuck to it in the way you did, I’m guessing that it just fastens to the bottom of the cube correct? When I saw these in an add, I imagined them standing up behind the records. I thought it had adhesive flaps or something that would allow that. But, it sitting in the bottom of the cube make much more sense as it would be much easier to install. Thanks for the review. I have been eyeing these for awhile. Though I do have animals. None of them mess with the records, but I feel like my records being recessed into the cube, help protect against hair and dirt. If I had them sticking out like you do, I think I would lose my mind as my imagination ran wild.

You hit the nail on the head. Just stick them right to the bottom of the book case. They're just thick enough to keep the records from sliding back.

Imake my own record shelves out of knotty pine. Stain it and nail on a thinnish backing board. Works like a charm and doesn't cost what Kallax does.

I just buy the bins. Helps prevent dust as the edge of thee bin leaves little room on the shelf uptop or so I hear. Downside is you can't see the spine but hey, less likely for my cat to try and eat the outer sleeves. Then again I own less than a 100atm so I don't know how it would work with more/larger collections

You may find that it gets to be a bit of a pain as your collection grows, then again, you may like the system you have. There's no wrong answer there.

It really depends on my mood and the music. I find that I tend to prefer Jazz on vinyl almost exclusively while I mix up the heavier stuff all the time between formats.

I bought these a few months ago and love them. The plastic coating that you peel off smells horrendous tho. I have the skinny version but it doesn’t leave the 1 inch open like it says. Maybe I was sent the wrong product who knows. They work great nonetheless

I made my own record shelves, as I was annoyed that ikea does not ship. Fun pandemic project with three 3/4" 4x8' plywood boards. Saws, router, glue clamp, done to my specifications, extremely rigid due to L-shape in corner. If I should decide to put back stops in, I'll saw them to size from discarded shipping palette wood, very simple up cycling. Re 7", I made a shallow drawer for cassettes, 7" sit on top. Works perfectly.

My record collection is so old that it predates IKEA here in Oz (and storage was very expensive) so I have always made my own shelving which has always had the records overhang by about 20mm. My current storage I built straight onto the wall and it looks great especially with the record dividers I recently made out of corflute and I have no need for spacers.

I hammered a piece of plywood to the back of my cabinet that I painted black, and then used pool noodles. It was a good solution, but this is a lot easier and probably cheaper in the long run. Pool noodles will be cheaper than these spacers. But when you add in the plywood and spray paint costs, this is the better solution. Though I think I would put one on the bottom AND top of each cube, to really make sure that the record is secure.

You really only need the one at the bottom of each cube and they work quite well. A lot less work than plywood and paint too ;-)

He didn't say anything about a 10 inch solution. As a work around, you could place a 10 inch on the shelf where you want and measure how far from the back to place the space though. Not quite as cut and dry, but it'd get the job done.

If you need 10 inch storage, maybe the RE stuff that Target sells and some of the Walmart 11 inch cube fabic bin storage solutions might work better than a traditional Kallax, Expidit , Threshold design. They are flimsy as heck but with a back board on it and maybe some corner metal screwed into them they might hold the weight.

I some strips of 1x3 glued in place with a hot glue gun. Very easy. Did that years ago. BTW- the company’s web site advertises a blank disc to set antiskate. That’s both a popular and wrong method.

I bought some of these. The included foam tape did not work at all. So I bought some double-sided Gorilla tape, and those don't work either. I think I'm just going to use a few screws and fasten them permanently.

@@thevinylattack LOL, I have the Walmart/BHG version of the Kallax units. The surface is slightly textured, is maybe why they don't stick as well. The foam squares held for about a month before I noticed my records were no longer flush in a few spots. The Gorilla Tape failed almost immediately on the ones I replaced.

The Kallax is a popular choice for storing records, but this isn't for me. I've installed the doors on my shelving to protect the covers from sunlight damage and these inserts wouldn't work with the kit installed. The only issue is you can't avoid the hinges and there is the potential to damage the covers so you need to put less in each section! It certainly looks tidier though and reduces dust getting in as well.

Rather than doors have you tried to place a "sacrificial lamb" of a non valuable record jacket facing forward to keep the UV down? It might look like cover art in each cube.

I cut mine in half. Without doing so the records stuck out a quarter inch. Cutting them in half they are about half an inch in now.

I 3D printed my own backspacers. There's .stl files on thingaverse. Also, I would not use anything PVC near my records as it can off-gas and collect on the records themselves, if they are not properly protected. This has happened with cheap outer sleeves made of PVC in the past.

@@thevinylattack Just regular PLA. "PLA plastic or polylactic acid is a vegetable-based plastic material, which commonly uses cornstarch or sugarcane as a raw material. The monomer is usually made from fermented plant starch. This material is a thermoplastic aliphatic polyester and it is the primary natural raw material used in 3D printing."
