There has been a TON of news coming out of CES 2020 about 8K TVs, but do you really need to think about upgrading? Will 8K Blu-ray ever be a reality? What differences will you notice between 4K and 8K?

That's what streaming services are for... ...and that option gives you a visual/audio acuity that is better than a DVD transfer, but worse than a Blu-Ray transfer. So, I would rather pay for another physical medium.

No they are just trying to figure out how to keep people buying TVs. We hit a point that you can get a cheap 4k tv for around $200 or $300. Me as a gamer I'd rather have 4k 120 fps over 8k 60 fps

I noticed compression more than I can notice resolution. Especially a low compression dark scene. That’s why I prefer blu rays over streaming 4K.

_oof_ Don't stream 4K. Download or UHD blu-rays plx. Even if *_you_* have the bandwidth that doesn't mean it isn't being throttled at the other end (glares at Netflix).

One big factor you have to take into account are demos you see in 8K TVs in stores. They really look better (at least the ones i've seen) but that is because they don't show those same demos on their 4K TVs. So people are led to belive that it is the resolution that makes the tv look better, whether in fact it is just better video material. But as far as only for resolution, when you go lets say 10 inches (which nö one does normally) up close to an 8K TV it really looks amazing - but you will probably never see content like this anytime soon, except for very few youtubers filming in 8K.

Also the demo's are always just a slow camera pan of nature, then it transitions into other slow moving objects. You would think they would at least show movie trailers, so you can see the capabilites of the tv when showing fast moving objects. That is usually the difference between the high end tv's to the cheaper ones.

I "suffer" from the same new found addiction. I picked up a Samsung Q90R on some black Friday deals in late November and have accumulated about 25 4k discs since then and another 20 blurays. I owned 0 before that, so it's a "collection" to me haha.

I bought a Panasonic 4K player on Black Friday 2019 and I went a little overboard with buying 4K disks. They were all on sale over the last few months. I bought about 110 and I'm always looking for good deals to keep building my collection. I look at it this way...… I was getting most 4K movies for $10 to $15 and they all came with Digital Codes and a Blu Ray disc as well. Best Buy even had a few days when they were all buy 2 get 1 Free even with the sale prices.

It's also important to note that in terms of content, old films can greatly benefit from a 4k scan. Anything shot on 35mm or higher will see a significant increase in real detail over a 2k scan, where that is not the case for an 8k scan. Only films shot on 60-70mm or 35mm IMAX (of which there are relatively few) would benefit from an 8k scan. And that's not mentioning the benefit of a (good) HDR application, which is arguably more important than a resolution increase.

I’d see 8K as being useful in the future for 3-D 4K movie playback. Doubt it would actually happen anytime soon for many reasons you can probably guess but it would be awesome!

Notification gang 😤 I think 8k content will happen in the next decade or so, some KZbinrs are already doing it and it will definitely happen in the film industry for the sake of vfx and having crisp quality when compressing to 4k. In terms of TV or projection, it's definitely a gimmick but it could happen for movie theatres or huge billboards.

Towards the end of the decade maybe. But keep in mind the vast majority of 4k discs are just upscaled 2k discs with HDR. We don't currently have the rendering power to do CGI at 4k in a timely and economical manner so 8k is still a ways off.

Do what I do, if it is two video generations old and I like the movie, THEN I upgrade. If I own it on DVD, I will upgrade to 4K Blu-Ray, if I own it on Blu-Ray, I will upgrade, when an 8K disc/cartridge is available. I will also only upgrade to 8K, if 8K media has 14-bit and/or 16-bit color, because THAT will make a true visual difference. This method saves you money, and is a happy medium.

Makes sense. I was esceptical of how much of an upgrade was UHD comprared to BD. I was somewhat surprised, but I just can't see picture quality can improve in any noticeable way, and I'm ok with it. I'm slowly wokring on upgrading my collection to 4K

Great video, I can see 8k thriving but not until high res 8k sources are ubiquitous. We've barely got 4k content today, and as you mention often its actually 2k upscaled much of the time.

They haven't even used 4k completely yet. Most films aren't shot in 4k, tv broadcasts in 560p in the uk (I think), game consoles can't do 4k 60fps, there's nothing in 8k to stream and theres no such thing as an 8k player. So no. It's not worth going 8k. Not now and not for the foreseeable future.

Most films are shot in 4k today, and remember 35mm film can be scanned to 4k. We’ll probably look back at 2010-2019 as a time when digital was new and had a lower res.

Thanks for the informative video! I am going to finally jump from 1080p to 4K this year, as the 4K TVs are very affordable now. I'm still impressed by the quality of 1080p and standard blu ray. I'm not even thinking about 8K. You bring up some excellent points, especially about the bandwidth required to stream at 8K is insane. It makes no sense in the world of data caps that we live in now. I think we are reaching the limits of the benefits of higher resolution on a TV. We need new tech like holographic TV's!

I mean, 8K _will_ become a thing eventually. You mentioned the bandwidth issues but also the image processing requirements are significantly higher not to mention the increase in file size for 8K footage. If digital downloads were more of a thing it might expediate the introduction of 8K but that is, much to my chagrin rather a niche thing as not many people have the TB of storage for putting 4K (let alone) 8K movies on HDD's or SSD's. Also, add to that copying 4K movies from UHD blurays to SSD/HDD is a bit of a process will only slow down the adoption of 8K. Like you said, most people will have a 55-65" screen for watching movies and at that screen size 8K isn't really an improvement over 4K. Even when/if larger screen sizes do become more affordable how many people really have space (unless they are a dedicated movie buff) for screen sizes where 8K makes more sense?

Go for it (if you haven't already), you won't be disappointed! And it will do it for you quite a long time, I don't think 8K TVs will really become relevant earlier than, let's say, six or seven years from now. I guess that with the release of the next gaming console generation (which will probably be around 2027 assuming that they keep the turnus of seven years) that will probably feature 8K resolution, 8K TVs will become a thing, but not earlier.

Just last year Ive switched to 4k 27" monitor and it's really sharp. But there is still a tiny bit of aliasing in games with very bad aa. But the calculator works. 2 feet for 4k monitor and that's true. If I am any further, I cannot see the detail

It won't be about content, it will be about technological progress and will likely come soon enough. The higher resolution will l likely just be a by product of increasing display quality. I am guessing 8k displays will become the standard in a decade or so, but the content will still be the same as it is now, just upscaled, some 8k will be produced but it's not really going to be a driving factor.

I had a samsung ks8500 55inch curved was very happy with it, i upgraded to the samsung q80r its a big improvement the ks8000 series was hdr1000 ,1000nits q80r is 1500nits and q75r or 70r is hdr1000 just make sure you get 1000nits or higher

Jeff greetings from Germany, well my nativ 4K 120 Inch wide screen picture quality from my real nativ Sony VW1000 (since 2012) projector even without HDR is to my eyes A1 enough so no need for 8K

The better way to look at it is angular resolution. The human eye can see 576 MP if you looked all the way around your field of view using your fovea. But the TV doesn't take up the entire field of view. The optimal distance to a TV is when it fills up 40 degrees of your field of view. The human FoV is ~180 degrees. So (180/40)^2=20.25 That means that the TV resolution needs to be 576/20.25=28MP. That does assume still content and perfectly corrected vision (which is over 20/20)

I'm still not completely sold on 4K. I have a 4K TV and UHD Blu-ray player but I think we could have just added HDR to regular Blu-ray and upgraded the HD panel tech to OLED and MicroLED and been just as well off. As you said, most movies are still mastered in 2K and if 2K is good enough for first run movie theaters where people pay $10-15 a ticket, it should be good enough for anyone's home. It's definitely a savings in bandwidth as well. Plus we have a lot of movies that still haven't even made it to Blu-ray yet. Some not even DVD.

You have a great channel mate, with lots of info, and I'm pretty sure you already know what I'm about to say since you seem to be up to date with tech... 16K is already out from Sony ($5 million dollars though... insane) and I think Samsung's the wall eventually hits 16k... but 16k while insane to think of, especially since we're all starting to get used to 4K, and now 8k is out.. 16k will be the next market... and yes it most probably not necessary for watching movies, but I can tell you for a fact for a gamer 8k does have it over big time on a 4k tv... some 4k tv's have really crap input lag (refresh rates), the 8k tv's are brilliant for gaming... so my next tv will be an 8K Samsung, as I game alot... anyway mate, great channel, just wanted to throw my 2 cents worth in...

We definitely need 8k! Theater movies would be shot in higher res, home projectors would have better quality as well. Look at the dots in the first few rows of a theater. People also forget that it will help in virtual reality and get rid of the screen door effect. Did no one see CES? With the release of micro LED and the wall panels from two vendors; in the future TVs could take up whole walls. Same with roll down screens. With 8k more color information can also be displayed because you have more pixels to send to and bit depth can be improved, maybe even to RAW territory/14 bit. Widescreen shots and can definitely help with 8k resolutions as well. Many benefits from 8k. Video compression techniques will improve and so will internet speeds. Hell 15 years ago some people were using 33/56k modems! Japan is already broadcasting a channel in 8k and have an 8k satellite signal. Downsampling would improve 4k as well as would 3d. It is going to be the standard by 2023.

It will hardly be the standard by 2023. In fact it will be many years beyond that. Higher resolution screens doesn't mean anything. 4K is already taking far, far, longer than 720p and 1080i TV's took to take over. We have had 4K TV's for a long time now. And movies are still being rendered at 2K. The TV industry still broadcasts only at 720p and 1080i. (They haven't even adopted 1080p TV's yet.) LOL! Major KZbinrs are switching back to 1080p from 4K because so few people watch in 4K. And Blu-Ray 4K sales are a tiny fraction of 1080p Blu-Ray sales. Micro LED flat panels are many years away. The Micro LED panels at CES are extremely energy inefficient. They require 240 volt power outlets just to run. That big wall panel from Samsung in fact about needed 480 volt power. It was drawing over 11,000 watts of electricity. A 120 volt 20 amp outlet maxes out at 2,400 watts. And my 4K TV at home uses about 200 watts in comparison. Plus Micro LED is so expensive, that it can't even be marketed to consumers right now. They are literally targeting corporations and sporting venues with this tech since they are the only ones who could possibly afford it. Also more pixels doesn't mean more color accuracy. A 1080p TV can support full 12-bit Dolby Vision and HDR10+ just as well as a 4K TV or 8K TV. We just don't see it on 1080p TV's, since they tend to be marketed as budget models now. But Samsung's best looking and LG's best looking display panel right now, is not an 8K HDR panel. Infact its their flagship 4K models that has the best picture quality and color accuracy. Their 8K panels have the highest resolution display panels sure! But in other metrics, the 4K panels are still better. We have seen this in the past as well. More pixels doesn't mean better quality. It just means higher resolution and that's it. Everything else comes to optimisation. And that Japanese channel is the only one on Earth broadcasting in 8K. And they also are not cropping video or doing special effects and they are using a dedicated closed system. Plus it's got limited hours. 10 am to 10 pm. Every other broadcaster in Japan is still only broadcasting in 720p/1080i. So this network is more of a testing structure. No other network on Earth does this in any other country. Why hasn't 4K pushed this already? Because the TV industry doesn't drive the market. The consumer does. And 4K has been slow to adopt. And 8K will be even slower still. So slow in fact, that even tech geeks aren't all on board. Let alone the average consumer. The average consumer is tired of upgrading. And when most can't see the difference between 1080p and 4K, why would they adopt 8K when they can't see any difference between 4K and 8K besides a higher price tag and a total lack of support from TV and Holliwood?

Linus tech just showed a video demonstrating how 8k and above will be needed for the new holographic panels that are being developed. Maybe the tech is moving beyond what you want to buy but that doesn't mean technology is going to take a stand still. Microled will go down in price extremely fast. 4k panels were over 10k just a few years ago. Same with any previous tech. I remember when HDTV plasma's were 10k. The majority of the planet uses 240volt except the US. That argument fallls flat on it's face. There is a reason why DLR's sell at a higher megapixel and we didn't stop at 8MP. I seen someone on here claim we can't see past 4k which is a lie the human eye can detect over 500MP and at a quick glance up to 16MP. South Korea and Japan are adopting 8k broadcasting for a reason. We are adopting 4k+ ATSC this year as well so your 720p/1080i statement again falls flat. When did you start representing the average consumer? People had 480i TV's just 25 years ago, and buy new phones/VR headset with higher pixel density year after year. I am not buying people are 100% content with current TV resolution especially broadcast. The ITU/SMPTE called for higher color depth on the UHD standard and the same will happen with 8K and any further. REC 2020 was defined by 4k and 8k it wasn't at 1080p. Major youtubers are not switching back LOL!!!! Physical media in general is down in sales what does that have to do with anything? DVD probably outsells bluray still so what is your point? We need higher resolutions, they will be better up scaled, wire angle shots and cropping for editing will all improve. Do I think there will be an 8K physcial disk format? Probably not optical disk. Solid state media is so cheap they will probably have 128GB+ flash drives distributed that will even help with compression issues with current 4k disk. I would love to see a kiosk that you could take a 512GB flash drive to download the movie instantly to and take home almost uncompressed video. It would be better than trying to download something like that over current internet. There are other TV technologies I would like to see besides resolution (wider aspect ration, better motion resolution, screen reflection, viewing angle, higher color depth, high refresh, brighter image, better blacks, better sound), but I am not going to hamper resolution either. I think eventually pixel structure will even change to were it is one consistent object and not drawn by RGB boxes. Then it will be to the point where you can't tell it from true reality standing before you no matter the distance.

I have no desire for an 8k TV but from what I was lead to believe it's not the resolution you notice. Like you said your eyes can't see the difference. But what it does do is give the impression of depth of field so the image almost looks 3D going into the image not out. It was a long time ago that I heard this and not sure how accurate it was though.

Nice vid and I would also say they are still having problems getting to 4k and for 8k, it has major problems. Most amps will not even pass 4k 120hz all the time, not to mention 8k. There still are no streaming solutions yet for 8k and only minimal 4k, not to mention most cables not working at 8k. They are also working on 12k now. But going from 1080(2k) to 4k is a big jump for large (>65 inches) screen viewing. Now I have 10 foot 4k projection system and looks great. I will say if they go 8K 3D movies would be great since it would be 4k split for 3D. One big problem is that most 4k displays have limited number of 120hz 4k ports. they need at least 5 if you use, xbox x, ps5, amazon tv, pc, 4k HDR disc player, plus any camera you want to hook in, etc. Most Displays today only have 2 ports that are rated as 120Hz 4k hdmi ports. (I will say I went through a lot of cable types that said they work at 4k 120hz and don't and sound amps w\HDMI for 4k and failed 4k just to get my 4k system to work as it should, so, forget 8K for now.)

I think the thing with dvd...is just how much content has been released on that format..It's affordable ...There's a collectors craze over vhs that tapes haven't seen release on the other formats

I’ll probably be picking up the new Samsung Q950 & Yamaha RX AVR but not for the 8K but for the full HDMI 2.1 functionality. I consider the tv being 8K more of a by product. I will definitely stick with physical media(HD & Up) but you are right that there will never be any 8K BD format but I am exited for the new gen gaming console coming out this year hence my need for full HDMI 2.1

I have a fairly new 4K TV but I had tried to get an 8K TV but the financing did not work out. Since then I've learned that if you have a 65" TV which is what I have, you can't tell the difference between 8K and 4K from a reasonable distance. They said an 85" TV would probably benefit from 8K. I will wait maybe 5 years to see how the 8K TV's work out. Then I may think about something bigger. I had wanted a 75" TV but because I wanted the Samsung q90r, it would have cost me another $1,500 and I couldn't afford that at that time.

I think I might keep my Panny VT60 until it dies but I've considered upgrading my BenQ HT1075 to 4k but still might wait until those native 4K JVCs come down in price and do it right...having said that...I hope that they keep pushing 8k on the masses...It just makes native 4k projectors (and hopefully microLed) affordable.

I have the Spears and Munsil UHD HDR Benchmark disc. It allows you to run 8K shot sample video in 4K with SDR, HLG, HDR10, HDR 10+ and Dolby Vision at various brightness mastering levels in nits (1000, 4000 and 10000). Watching the same video in SDR looks horrible compared to any of the HDR versions of the same footage. Mind blowing difference in color, lighting and perceived picture quality. HDR is king, the TV manufacturers need to work on getting that right first. Resolution is less important past 4K unless you want crazy big screens.

By that same logic, I still have a 60 inch 1080p Pioneer Elite plasma TV. I sit about 10 feet away. I don't want to upgrade everything every few years. The TV manufacturers need to agree on a standard that isn't going to keep changing. If I jump on the bandwagon with 4k, then 8k comes out. If I get 8k, what's to prevent 16k or something better from coming out?

In a couple of years, couple of generations of codec dev and faster hardware, bigger screens, I could see that it's possible and makes sense for some movies (e.g. IMAX) to be transfered to 8K (for at least archival reasons). And of course if people still buy physical media.

8k is straight path tech wise and is easy to market that is why it is getting made. the tech we actually need is things like VRR, good HDR etc. but how do you sell that to the public or standout inorder to get a consumer to buy your more expensive set?

I've heard 8K discs are never going to happen (which is understandable given the small market share of 4K UHD and lack of almost any movie content in 8K) so I recommend getting all the 4K discs you want while you still can! 4K is never going to look bad until the day you die, no matter how big your screen, so just embrace the best physical media has to offer (as it's better than anything online and will be for many years yet).

I think 8k and higher video screens will be common place in the future. The content will still be 4K, some 8k, but what will be driving the resolution bump will likely be the improving display technology and not the demand for 8k content, regardless of the marketing.

I remember hearing the same concerns and issues when 4K was announced. That you had to sit like 4 feet away to notice a difference, and it wasn't worth it. Look at where we are now. Granted, the biggest upgrade was the introduction of HDR, but there is a perceptible difference for most, especially since we went from like average 40" TVs, to now 65" screens. But now as gaming and massive screens are becoming more common, I can see how people will start justifying reasons to upgrade to 8k, even if it's not backed by science, and primarily a psychologically or ego effect. 8K is a little too premature, but it's the inevitable future.

Apple used to say that Retina display resolution was the potential limit of the human eye. I remember in 2007 when reviewer were complementing fullhd being crystal clear, now with 4K there's people saying that 1080p is blurry. Who knows what would happen come 2030, these same people would be saying that 4k is blurry when 8k and possibly 16k are commonplace

The thing with the watchable distance for 8K TVs it doesn’t match up with surround sound speakers listening distances. Watching an 8K tv with a sound bar would be interesting.

I went from a dense 4k 50 inch screen to a 4k 75 inch screen at about 10 feet and the picture got blurry..... Eventually i got used to it but theres a difference i bet if i went to 8k i wouldnt have felt it was blurry!

Hey Jeff, I agree 100%. They can't even get Jaws 4K out!!! I don't think the general public will go for 8K. What really pisses me off is they start a series on blu ray and end it on dvd. The Originals for example. So I am suppose to watch 4 seasons of blu ray on an 8K TV and watch the final season on DVD ???? Ya that will look like crap. Very frustrating. Good video though Jeff !!!! Thanks for covering this popular subject. The most important benefit that you dd not cover is that all of the 8K TVs have significant enhancements in the overall picture quality due to the upgraded priority video processors that are only employed in each brand and 8K series TV offerings. Better up-conversion of low grade sources, like cable, better color fidelity, color saturation and color volume and better dynamic tonal range and tone mapping. Here's just a couple examples: Sony's Z9G sports 4,000nits peak luminance so you see all of the dynamic tonal range and 100% of the color volume that is in 4K HDR content. Sony also designed the Z9G with the Back Light Master Drive and a greatly increased number of local dimming zones. LG's 88" Z9P OLED TV exclusively feature the Gen 2-PRO processor with an 2nd SoC that is dedicated to 8K up-conversion. For the 2020 line-up LG has improved the video processor even further and the new Gen 3 SoC has even a more advanced up-scaling, motion resolution enhancements and nails the P3 DCI color gamut. Motion resolution has also been upgraded. Regarding the 8K resolution it's also important to know that on larger screen sizes, like 85"+ you will see all of the detail in the image without interference of the coarser and larger gaps that are inherent in lower resolution displays.
