This is an exceptionally well done video. I really appreciate seeing the spectrum analysis along with hearing the differences. The way you pointed out what to listen for is really helpful as well. It’s the first video of yours that I’ve seen, but far from the last. Just subscribed today!

Great video! Proves that cab sim is not only eq tweaking. For those that are still skeptic try di sound vs cab sims in a recorded mix. In my experience most of the times the bass sits better/finds its place.

Great vid! I’ve used both live, but always end up preferring di. I’ve found (like Talkbass), cab sims sound great on their own, but muddy up my sound in a live rock band mix.

Thank you for that top explanation! Especially the difference between Lo/Hi pass filters and a cab. Excellent work 👍

Hey Ivan! Thank you for this. A couple if you have time. 1. which of these is your favorite method live? 2. if you prefer cab sims, which ones are your favorite for live situations?

My band is currently playing fully ampless nowadays, which is why I am now using the neural dsp quadcortex

Great video, man! I have questions. I use a darkglass b3k and an ampeg preamp clone. For gigs without amp, do you prefer routing B3K through preamp and then the XLR direct to mixer? or from B3K directly to mixer? And there is an amp, which routing do you recommend to use? Using preamp or without preamp. Thank youu so much

I always try to have my own DI box/preamp when playing. That way I feel comfortable with what I am sending the engineers and have some more control. With an amp i still send the signal from my pedals. Pretty much always my amp on stage is just a monitor for myself. I do not put a mic or take the XLR out from it.

You def hear a difference. Will this also apply with say practicing through the headphones out port? I’m looking to buy a pedal with a headphone and aux so I can practice without annoying peeps. One has ir and cab sun the other doesn’t

I think it really depends on the gear used and personal taste. I don’t care for them. I do think they help some overdrive and fuzz pedals by getting rid of some harsh frequencies. But I actually like my clean tone without a cab sim and I found an overdrive that has a low pass filter (darkglass microtubes X, the smallest one) and I dont feel like I need a cab sim with that pedal.

I agree!

Hi Ivan great video! In a recording situation do you think it's better to record clean and add a cab sim in the DAW? Or is it okay to use a cab sim pedal/ multi effect with cab sim. Extra question: Do you recommend cab sims for gigs where the bass has no amp and is just going DI?
@IvanBassist3 жыл бұрын
Hi Samuel! No matter what, when recording it is ALWAYS useful to have a backup clean DI signal. You can apply an amp/cab sim to it or blend it together with an amp for example. It also helps for spotting transients and edit later. A lot depends on the style of music that you play. If you’re playing with a DI only and have an overdriven sound, then yes. Always. If the sound is somewhat clean-ish, you can just send the DI to FOH. However, having a cab sim helps if you only have in-ears to monitor yourself.

In my opinion the clean signal sounds better with the DI while the overdriven signal sounds better with cabinet.

Yeah, drive without a cab or a cab sim sounds pretty nasty 🤢

I use a Sansamp Bass Driver DI V1 in my rig, which has an always on cab sim. I run it on full blend into a boss bass EQ pedal to boost the low end a bit. Next it goes into a klon centaur clone (hence the boss eq before it, to push more lows into the centaur) and then finally into a Boss BB-1X, which is also at full blend and just a hair of distortion. I use the TRS out to record direct. Sounds killer! I’m using a Rickenbacker 4003 by the way

Nice setup! I bet it sounds extremely punchy 💪🏽
@almostliterally5932 жыл бұрын
@@IvanBassist hell yeah. Its quite a bit compressed too. Naturally from all the gain stages. Tube-like saturation that is distorted alone but clean in a mix. I feel lucky bro, like i’ve found some super special secret pedal combo. The rig sounds way more expensive than it is. The secret is the Centaur clone. I’m using a Pedals By Tone Klone, which contains mythical tier russian germanium diodes :D. Theres a switch on the pedal to swap to a silicon diode, which makes it sound like an EHX soul food. (I. E. usually not as good but, i’ve dialed in some other neat sounds with it on occasion )

So a cab sim is basically a high-cut filter. Well ain't that some jive. That's just the music industry telling you to buy this and buy that.
@IvanBassist7 күн бұрын
It is and it isn’t. It has different EQ curves than just applying a HPF or LPF
@tortillaman24917 күн бұрын
@@IvanBassist Well if it's just cutting that and boosting here and there, then all you need is an graphic EQ pedal. Glad you made this video.
