From my experience, playing without nails produces a quiet and somewhat muddy tone. I know there is a current trend in the classical guitar world to use no nails, but that is the minority. If a person decides to embrace the use of nails, then they must experiment with the shape and length, which affects tone quality and volume. Personally, my nails are kept somewhat short and in a ramp shape.

I agree, I’m not a fan of no nails. For me personally, it messes with my tone and technique. And I don’t use really long length either, just enough to get options with my tone and punch through. I just like promote the idea that it’s ok to try either way, because some people will let this single idea deter them from even trying, thinking they have to grow their nails long to start and start learning. But I always say it’s ideal to let them grow a bit…

So Flamenco, I don’t know of any personally. That’s why I didn’t say Flamenco. But I know there were a few renown classical guitarists that played without nails. For example, Francisco Tarrega played without nail later in his career. Not sure if it was because of preference or because of problems, but he did perform like that from what I’ve read. And I’ve also seen a couple current classical performers that endorse the idea of the possibility of playing without nails. Again, it’s in the minority… but they’re out there. And lastly I’ve had a few students that had problems or didn’t want to grow them long because of their career… and I’ve seen it’s possible. Not ideal, but possible. Just depends on your specific goals and tone you’re after.
