In my opinion if your doing shorter trips I can’t see the point in using the ortlieb ones, I have cheap altura ones paired with decent dry bags they do the job . Keep cycling indeed , nothing better than being out in the wilds on your bike 🚲👍

You covered some interesting ground there,James.Having a variety of pannier bags makes you malleable,i guess, and therefore, susceptible to modification. Good honest views, mate. 👍👍

I agree James...lighter bags are adequate on the shorter trips. I like my outlier, but they do add a bit more weight. btw...good topic.

I've used ortlieb for over 15 years now... I use the small on the front and rear or just the larger ones at the back.. keeps my kit very dry on those long wet trips.. I feel that the slight weight increase and better wet weather performance over other bags is worth the extra price and weight as well as the good warranty .. as for the rack top bag, its not for me ! I use a military dry bag on the rear when I need extra storage, will be doing the coast and castles this year as well as maybe supporting my son on the highland trail 500 endurance race as well as doing sections of the great north trail.. see what this years brings

When I first went to buy my first panniers in 2006. I asked the guy in the shop whether to go for the ortlieb or the other brands. His answer..”do you want your gear to get wet?” “No?” “ it’s the ortliebs then”. I’ve used them ever since, and in some horrendous weather, never once had wet gear. Yeah they are a bit heavier. But who cares. They are brilliant. Tough. Hard wearing and completely waterproof.

Ortlieb panniers all day long. I have various varieties and colours. They are totally dependable whether commuting, shopping or indeed touring. Mine have never ever leaked in all the years I have had Ortlieb panniers. My stuff remains bone dry inside. They were a game changer when I bought them. Previously I have had Altura Orkney bags with stupid rain proof covers which were a real PITA to use. Also I have had Karrimor bags in years gone by. They leaked more than a sieve. Then Vaude AquaPlus panniers were good at first promised so much, but after one years use started to leak, seams and zips delaminating. I got a replacement pair under warranty, but sold them asap as new and then bought Ortlied panniers. Have never regretted it. Just wonder why it took me so long to buy them. Buy cheap buy twice. The slight weight penally of Ortlieb bags if indeed there is one, is nothing really. They are streets ahead of other cycling luggage in terms of build quality, waterproofness and durability. The Ortlieb bags I tend to use most are their sport packer range which uses a lighter Cordura material while it is still waterproof. I do have their Classic range bags as well which use their most tough and robust heavier full fat fabric. I also have various Ortlieb dry bags of different materials, thickness and colour. I love my Ortlieb panniers and bags. I also have their medium 31 and 49 litres rack pack bags in black which double as kit going away bags that I can just chuck in the back of the car if need be. They are so easy to use and rugged. Highly recommended. I can afford them so why not? Tbh in the long run they cost less as they outlast everything else and you don't have to buy replacements as when cheap panniers fall apart or they start letting in water and ruining your stuff you might as well bin them and buy new. I'm not into using bin bags to keep my stuff dry. This seems to me to defeat the whole purpose of a supposedly waterproof pannier or bag.

I have two front and back sets. And a 24 litres rack pack. And I have two handle bar bags. I am going on a tour soon and it seems it will rain most of the week so it will be good to use the ortliebs.

Apart frrom being completely waterproof, Ortlieb are a pain when on a long tour (30 days +). No pockets, so you have to delve when trying to find something - and if you get erratic weather rumbling in and out of the bags all day for changes of clothes is a nuisance. The same for food - everything gets squished up together, whereas panniers with pockets - and some plastic bags - help to plan your menu and keep it safe. Old-fashioned Karrimor, now 25 years old and still going strong - lots of pockets, long tent carrying flaps, adjustable closures, and now with over 120,000km on them - so why change, I'm not trendy? Weight: I'm 6'4" and 18 stones - so who notices an extra pound or three?

I might use the ortlieb bags for a summer tour. But I will stick to my cheap panniers for most trips.

People tend to put their tent and mat in one bag. That bag does not need to be waterproof, neither does the one you put your cooking equipment in. If you want to save weight, don't use a touring bike which adds 10lbs+
