I'm a retired Deputy Sheriff of 27 years also a SWAT commander and firearms instructor. I've EDC .357sig since the mid 90's. Yes it's expensive to shoot, yes it has a big blast. But in real world shootings it just works, it has that 96% one shot stop. So I go to the range with a 9mm conversion barrel and train with it. That takes care of the price for ammo. But I carry full power .357sig, underwood, Buffalo bore or double tap. Trust me. I've shot thousands and thousands of rounds. But still protects my life, and the life of my family. And yes, the .40 magazine sometimes will hang up on the barrel feed ramp on the .357sig. So for reliability use .357sig magazines or change the .40 follower. Thanks for the video.

⁠​⁠@@ted.angell7609Hi, I take liberty to answer your question based on S&W m&p 2.0,,,,mp2 either in 9mm or .40 s&w has the same build parts/ guts, .40s&w slide is bit beefier than 9mm slide but all the rest is exactly the same,,,,extractor on the slide or ejector on the sear block are the same parts,,, I had purchased KKM Precision 357sig barrel for mp2.0 .40 slide and that was all I needed. S&W mp2.0 in .40 comes with OE magazines stamped or .357sig / .40 bullets I assume Glock is no different.

One quick observation: for the concealed carry market, I'd think the .40 would be superior to the .357 Sig specifically BECAUSE of the Sig's penetration. While a plus for LEO use - car doors and windshields, etc. - it seems contraindicated for private use. I would not want to hold on shots out of fear of over-penetration and danger to bystanders. Stopping within the target - even at the cost of marginal penetration - is preferable to injuring a bystander, by far. On another subject, the outpouring of condolences and grief over the premature loss of Paul Harrell really crystallizes how we, as viewers, feel about you and others who enter our lives and consciousness through the medium of KZbin. You end up meaning a lot to us, as "virtual pals" and "members of the tribe." We celebrate your presence - and thank you for your wisdom and good humor, shared generously with us. And with the info you find online, it's possible to become fairly competent as a pistolsmith using tools that you can buy for $20 to $100. Depending on whose advice you listen to.

My primary carry piece is a lowly Glock 19 gen 3 I've used for 15 years - with a HoloSun EPS green MRS optic, a custom threaded barrel with a suppressor or compensator depending on need, an OLight combination tac light and red laser, custom trigger, & mag extenders. On the other hand, the first time I ever fired a rifle, I was 10 at camp & I put all my shots in the 9, 10 & X ring. That was 66 years ago. Since then, I've had military combat training, have done some competition shooting (which will develop bad habits unless it is combat simulation competition), have had 2 years of combat shooting training from 2 retired Israeli special forces soldiers in NYC (and 2 years of Krav Maga alongside that). I don't care what weapon you are carrying. Even a Stacatto XC like the one I used to use in competition won't help you if you can't shoot it effectively. As long as a weapon is decently accurate & the trigger mechanism is decent and the barrel is long enough for reasonable distance and the ammo is reasonably effective, it ALWAYS comes down to who's behind the weapon, not the weapon itself. The real question is have you ever been in a real gunfight situation? Have you learned to control the adrenaline flow & other bodily actions that make you lose muscle control when somebody is shooting back at you. You can't develop this from KZbin videos or all of the hundred drills you like to go through firing at paper or metal targets at a range. I have a friend who used to be a Philadelphia cop. For a number of years, he worked undercover in North Philly in an area known as the Badlands (one of the 3 or 4 largest fentanyl distribution centers in the country). He was a highly skilled marksman with his Glock 17 & had won numerous awards in Police competitions. One day he was in a bust that went bad (he was playing the guy picking up the drugs). One of the bad guys took off at a run & my friend went after him, holding his Glock in the mid-ready position with both hands, a round in the chamber & 17 in the mag. The perp dodged into an alley & in a fit of adrenaline, he didn't turkey peek around the corner, but followed him into the alley. It was a blind alley and he ended up standing fully exposed, his pistol with 18 rounds pushed forward in a shooting stance, facing a similarly unprotected perp with a Sig. It was his first live gunfight. They were 10 feet apart. Both emptied their entire mags at each other with neither scoring a hit - at 3 meters or so!!! The perp fumbled his mag swap & my buddy tackled him. He said that he never again took it for granted that carrying a firearm gave him ANY real safety.

I purchased 2000 once fired .357 Sig cases a few years back. The cost was not great. The 357 uses a truncated 9mm bullet. I get them on sale. 40 SW and 38 spec. bullets are double the cost. The 9mm loads with 4.5 grains of powder. The 357 takes 9 grains. Now that's almost twice a much, so the cost is higher there. I use small rifle primers in the 357. With what I have on hand I could blast away for years. My bundle of joy is a P229 with two slides and all three barrels. My 7 shot three inch 686 loads up with 11.5 grains of powder and the blast from that is harsher that the Sig.

I once went into a self-loading phase, but not for long. A good friend advised me that he quit self-loading & stuck to factory ammo after a couple of squibs blew a crack in his barrel. Interestingly, in his case (a Glock 17), in both instances both bullets came out & hit the target when he fired the second cartridge. But, he was out a good aftermarket barrel each time & had to replace it. Go figure. I've never had a squib with my Hornaday Critical Defense 115 grain 9mm.

The.357 Sig is made from necked down 10mm cases. I form my own since factory cases aren’t found at the range so often. I took my Glock 23 and added the.357 Sig barrel to it. It’s my go to when I play in old abandoned mines. I’ve come across 2 mountain lions and one bear so far but, fortunately, I haven’t had to shoot them. They all backed up as did I. So I have one gun, the Glock 23 that fires the 9mm, 40 S&W and the.357 Sig with just a barrel (and magazine (9mm), change.

Speaking of the cost of ammo. That would be a good subject for another video. I took my Dan Wesson 44 Magnum to the range recently because one of my grandsons wanted to shoot it. I had not shot it in quit a while. 44 magnums are basically a dollar per shot now. Nice thing is, 44 Specials are not quite as expensive. I shoot mostly 38 Specials with my 357 magnum guns. But I have really gotten into shooting 22lr. But even that is not as cheap as it used to be. Nothing is!

As a retired LE officer, I always felt soo much more confident carrying the .40 than the 9mm in the event of an OIS. The recoil of the .40 is negligible compared to 9mm, but so many GunTubers have the general populous so convinced of the "snappiness" of the .40 that people that have not even shot a .40 will tell you how "snappy" it is. I shoot all calibers, but if I had to choose only one pistol it would be one chambered in .40 that could be easily converted to .357 Sig with just a barrel swap. And for those who say many pistols cannot handle the stress of the .40 because they were just basically 9mm's with different barrels (Glock 22, 23) the fifth gen Glock 22 slide is definitely "beefed" up over previous generations eliminating any durability concerns.

Your comment struck a chord with me. I have identical CCW pistols - Taurus G2s - one in 9mm, one in .40. The 9mm's recoil is sharper, without question. I say that because I, and 3 others I've had compare them at the range, have the same opinion. The 9mm is "snappier" and slower back on target for follow-up shots. It may be the recoil spring rate or some such, but there's no doubt. The interesting thing is that the classic LEO .40 - the S&W 4006 - recoils more than the G2, and it's a pound heavier; the slide is too heavy, resulting in muzzle rise at the end of recoil travel rearward. Physics matters.

@@MrGsteele Recoil comes NOT from the slide. A heavier slide soak up more recoil.. Its called mass eneratia. Otherwise 9mm from a revolver would have less recoil than from a auto pistol but its the opposite. But its kind of logical that a 124gr 9mm p+ at 1200fps feels more snappy as a 180gr 40S&W at 950gr. Its always a question which loads you compare.

@@Gieszkanne That's not correct - if I understand what you're trying to say. The slide moving backwards has momentum - as all moving bodies with mass have. The slide, at the end of its rearward travel, comes to a sudden stop by impacting the frame's slide stop. That transfers part of the momentum of the slide to the now-coupled slide and frame, and is felt as recoil. A heavier slide will accelerate rearward less than a light slide, and impart less recoil energy, but the same momentum as the light slide at higher velocity. I can tell you categorically that my heavy slide 4006 imparts more rearward force against my hand than does the much lighter slide of the G2. The difference between a revolver and a semi-auto comes from the fact that a revolver has no independent moving parts - it acts as a uniform mass. The semi-auto decouples the slide and (if the barrel reciprocates) barrel mass from the frame. As a result, it accelerates more rapidly, for a given applied energy, than the entire mass of the revolver. Being lighter than the gun as a whole, it achieves a higher rearward velocity. Energy scales as the square of velocity. So the lighter, but much faster-moving slide produces a relatively high energy. The attenuation of the rearward momentum of the slide prior to stopping at the end of its travel is provided by the recoil spring. If the recoil spring tension is insufficient to completely stop the slide, the slide impacts the frame; if it stops it mid-travel, there will be no impact against the frame, and the recoil impulse will be gradual over the period of travel. If it stops the slide just before impact, the deceleration will take place over the entire period of rearward travel, making for a soft recoil impulse. Recoil springs matter - they extend the period of recoil, resulting in less perceived sharpness compared to that resulting from a high-velocity slide impacting the frame without being slowed. Try shooting a 1911 without its recoil spring. In your example, however, the .40 has greater momentum than the 9mm, not less.

Its the velocity, before it can kick, the sig bullets are out of the gun. . I love the sig, but a high pressure 40, is better, due to the size, and penetration exceeding the sig. .. listen to this guy, he is telling the truth. I hate the hollow point 180 grains, because its so snappy with regular winchesters.,,, but 😂winchester silvertips are 155 grains of slappery, and will rival the sig any day. Also buffalo bore, doubletap, and some others are pushing .40 to 10mm grounds. The sig isnt too snappy, just a hell of alot of fire behind that baby bullet🎉

Great video. I purchased my Sig P239 back in 2005/6 mostly because my duty assignment required a compact handgun and I wanted stopping power with penetration. Using Speer Gold Dot 125 grain HJP since purchase and I'm very happy with the performance for what I require of the gun. This has been my EDC for decades and other than price of ammo, I have zero complaints.

Condolences to Mr. Harrell's family and friends. I have loved the .357 Sig since it came out. It has plusses and minuses. One of the downsides is bullet setback when a round is chambered multiple times due to the small amount of case contact to the projectile. Can equal dangerous chamber pressures.

I carried a Gen2 G31 for 20 years. Used 40 & 357 mags interchangeably. Never an issue. For my P226 and 229, the packaging is marked 357 Sig & 40 S&W. Nice presentation. I found LEO trade-in cases of Speer Gold Dot and Lawmen recently in 357S. The Gold Dot was $20/50rds. The Lawmen was $14/50rds. I bought all the Gold Dot they had (3 cases) and 6 cases of the TMJ Lawman. I should be good for a while.

I have a S&W M&P 357c (Compact) new since 2010. It came with three 10 round mags and I added two 15 round mags. I have a S&W .40S&W barrel too. I also have a 9mm S&W barrel with three 12 round and two 17 round mags. It's a blast to shoot on my range. To buy this setup today would be about a Grand. I wouldn't trade it for the world.

.357 SIG has significant upsides. Nearly .357 Magnum ballistics with excellent barrier (windshields etc) penetration. The slightly bottlenecked case feeds fantastically. The first widely used semiauto pistol, the Mauser C-96, was initially chambered in a very similar cartridge (30 Mauser) for good reasons. Downsides: it is wicked LOUD! The only time I ever developed a flinch was when I started shooting .357 SIG. Ammo is not always readily available and it’s expensive. Hand loading is a challenge, mostly because the neck is so short compared to the diameter of the bullet. Setback is a serious concern. Solution? 9x23 Winchester FTW 😜

What do you mean? 9mm is .35 caliber not .30 caliber and so is .357 Magnum (it's literally in the name .357). All these rounds are the same caliber. They should just round up to .36 caliber and should have made them all .36 caliber or .35 caliber exactly because why did they make them five thousandths of an inch and seven thousandths of an inch over .35? Like why in the world would would they make a round a few thousandths of an inch off and such weird diameter instead of just .350? Why .355 or .357 but I digress what that all means is they're all the same caliber. 9mm, .357 Magnum, 38 special, and .357 Sig are all the same caliber. Neither .38 special or .357 Magnum are .38 caliber actually they are only called .38 special because long ago when they first made the round they measured the case diameter instead of the bullet diameter for some reason and the case is .38 inch. Also it's dumb that the .380 called that when that's also a .36 caliber round like the others and not .38 caliber and they have no excuse or reason at all for calling that round .38 caliber.

WORD TO THE WISE HAND LOADER. 357 is not a "neck down 40". Parent case for both is 10mm. If you neck a 40, your case length will be too short! Doesn't matter if it headspaces on a shoulder. Plus the head webbing isn't as robust as 10mm so it won't safely handle the same pressure!

Thank you for pointing this out, as someone who has been hand loading 357 Sig for a couple decades. This is hard round to get good crimp and prevent bullet set back. I use both a taper crimp die and prefer a lower bulk density powder to fill the case as much possible so if the crimp fails, it can't move much.

I only had good luck loaded 1 batch of nickel plated 357 (in wich my Hornady decapper definitely enlarged all the flash holes) but so far have had very good success with 124gr XTP JHP and AA7 powder. around 1300 fps give or take depending on barrel length. Using medium Lee crimp.

My 10 is a long slide Tanfoglio with 200 gr FMJ in a chest rig. but I really enjoy loading 460 Rowland on my converted 45. Most loads 1300 fps but a soft impractical XTP does 1600. Basically only 2 are right (hard cast coated, or hard cast core, thick jacketed XTP mag resized with special Corbin tooling). soft 230 XTP does make a water jug go BOOM though! lol You have to use Accurate 7 or Longshot. Expect flattened primers. Back off when the cases bulge... this is in a gun with a supported chamber. NOT A GLOCK.

I body size with a .40 carbide die with no decapper, then I full length size with the steel 357 sig size die without lube since it's only really sizing the neck. Never had a problem over the course of probably at least a thousand reloads.

My glock model 31 Gen3 357sig and I have a 40 barrel has never had a fail to feed, eject or stovepipe ever. My magazines have worked flawlessly with 357 sig and 40. Also have the advantage arms 22LR conversion which makes it super cheap to practice with the full-size.

Coonan has a semi-auto which fires the same rimmed .357 magnum which revolvers fire - it's been around since 2009 - and is based off of the 1911 platform, in fact, it actually accepts several 1911 accessories.

I have found that the 357 Sig is a good carry round with the 124/25 grain round at 1450 fps range. I am using this as my primary carry. It is equal to the 357 Mag something that I carried for years and still do when I am hunting. I also have a 9mm slide and barrel that fits my 229 which makes it cheaper to train with like shooting 38 special in a 357 mag. Plus I have a steel frame 229 making easier giving me better second shot control. I also have a 40 S&W barrel so I can use this great round also. I like your videos they are informative and fun to watch. Keep up the good work.

O-H-I-O Porters🇺🇸 My dad had a 357 Mag years ago & loved it. It was intimidating when he pulled it out & people began to know that he had it on him at all times. It was bulky, so he went down to a 25 caliber gun for his carry & kept the 357 in his briefcase or glove box in the truck. I like a 40 cal pretty well. I finally got a 45 cal & I love to carry it, but it is quite heavy and it took me a while to find the right holster to use. I like to switch things out from time to time, and now that ammo is quite expensive, I have a 380 backed up by a 45 or 9. Food for thought. Good stuff, my friend! Blessings! 🥰🤩✌️

I just picked up x2 complete uppers (slides, barrels, springs, and ejectors) to convert my Glock Gen 4 19 and 26 from 9mm to 40 S&W. Glad you mentioned the follower issue with the 357 Sig since I was considering picking up a Glock 31 'uppe' for my Glock 17. My Ruger Blackhawk in 30 Carbine has an insane muzzle blast sending a fire ball down range with every pull of the trigger.

Contrary to popular opinion, 40SW and 357Sig magazines are fully compatible because the parent cartridge for both is the 10mm. I have Glocks, an Sig P229 and a USP40. One caveat might be Glocks older than version 3. Maybe that was an issues in the early 90’s but not any more, at least from the major pistol manufacturers. Do you need that much power? According to the FBI Special Agent who wrote THE report, yes, yes you do. If 12 to 18 in the gel block is the standard, you want as close to 18 inches of penetration as possible plus expansion.

I started out with a .357 Ruger short barrel in the 1970's. It was a great totally reliable firearm. From there, I bought a Dan Wesson .357 kit. Then I started to get into 9mm handguns after the data said they work with the newer ammunition as an adequate protection caliber. A few years ago, I bought my first .40 caliber. That's a great pistol and it gives me added confidence in its ability to provide sufficient stopping power. If I was starting out now, knowing (or at least thinking I know) what I do now, I would use only .40 cal as my handgun of choice. And yes, I'm very familiar with the .45 having used it many times in the Marine Corps.

Glock is great the Glock 22 mags workwith the Glock 31 barrel in my Glock 22. Its nice to be able to switch back and forth between 40 and357 sig with just a barrel switch

I believe it was Paul Harrell who pointed out that in the "common" caliber ballistics effectiveness pyramid 40 S&W falls right behind 357 magnum and just ahead of 45 ACP... If memory serves it runs 96% for 357(125 gr SJHP), 94% for 40 (regardless of gr), 92-94% for 45 (depending on gr)... As i recall 9 mm came in somewhere around 67- 72%. Dick Fairburn also has some stats in his videos, and his own life experience, which supports 40 S&W as the "Goldielocks" caliber for law enforcement. As a former, and perhaps returning, law enforcement officer... I tend to agree with Dick, 9 mm is adequate for civilian self defense, but a bit under performing for leo applications.

YES! .357 sig isn't the first handgun you buy for self-defense, it's your second. Once you can handle 9mm, you should have no problem with .357 Sig. A lot more blast and the recoil is not snappy, but you got to hold it tight and you'll have extremely quick follow up shots. Not so easy with a 40. It's not cheap, but you can practice mostly with 9mm, and the self-defense ammo is the same as any other.

The problem with 357mag its only 6 to 8 rounds and it’s hard to control shooting fast. The 45 acp is just right not too much recoil, low blast and it’s the best overall with a suppressor. 40’s and 357 sig are hard to control shooting fast also. I own and have shot all of them competitively except the 357 sig. 45 ACP just seems to be the sweet spot. I’m converting to the 5.7 round now days though. I think it has the most potential now low recoil, very high capacity, flat shooting and very accurate and will penetrate body armor with the right 5.7 round. Better than 9mm but 5.7 is expensive to shoot.

The thing is the 40 is hotter so pistols have a tendency to have more of a sharp recoil, the 45 is more of a push into your hands not a sharp snap causing the barrel to rise more making the 40 harder to control shooting fast.

@@craigthescott5074 In my experience when people talk about "recoil" its a very subjective thing. I dont like this long heavy and strong push of 230gr 45 ACP. And from objective physical stand point 40 has less. There is a very interesting video about it with techniqual measurement. Title is "What caliber is harder to control - 9, 40, or 45?" There is even an explanation why some feel like the 40 has more recoil or is harder to control but it has nothing to do with having more recoil. Its very interesting.

@@Gieszkanne yes it boils down to how you control the recoil, but the fact that the 40 is hotter than a 45 and a bigger bullet weight than a 9mm makes perceived recoil more in comparison, in my opinion. That’s another reason why many people have a problem controlling a 10mm. I have no problem with any of them, I’m 6’ 1” 230 and I have big hands. But if your a 5’ woman with small hands the 40 and 10mm can be too much to qual with. The PD I worked for we trained women officers and they had problems controlling the recoil of a 40 but if they had big enough hand they tried the 45 and got better qual scores.

@@craigthescott5074 It realy depends on the loads. 40S&W and 45 ACP can be quite equal. For example a 230gr 45 ACP at 860 fps has 377 fpe. A 180gr 40S&W at 967fps has 373 fpe. These two loads might still feel different but must have about the same recoil energy. Of course there are much hotter 40S&W loads but the same is true for 45 ACP.
