I agree with much of what you say. 40 years ago, I was a spotty teenager earning some extra pocket money, cleaning neighbour’s cars. One of them had a beautiful 911 (& two gorgeous daughters), while the gorgeous daughters remained unobtainable, I did promise myself, that “one day....”. 35 is years later, I was able to spec my own Porsche 911 (991.2, C2) to the exact spec that I wanted. I have used the car as a daily driver (certainly pre covid) and racked up 100 000km in it. I have loved every single kilometre. I still get a buzz when I drive this out of my own garage. But my very best experience was soon after I had bought it. I had stopped at a garage to buy some fuel and then I needed some supplies inside the shop. As I am a wheelchair user, I was parked in the accessible bay by the door. When I came out a young boy was posing in front of the car, while his mother captured the moment on her cell phone camera. I suggested that they could get a better shot if the lad sat behind the steering wheel. I knew how excited that lad was, as all us petrolheads have been that kid. He sat in my seat, and gripped the steering wheel, his fingers feeling for the paddles, his eyes were on stalks as he drank in the dashboard, and all the controls. I knew I was planting another germ of a thought. I gave that lad a memory. If I had known the family, then I would certainly have offered the lad a trip in it (but decided it could of been construed as a bit odd for a complete stranger to offer to take a child out for a spin. But he got his photos, and has his memories, his first experience of sitting in a sports car. Even while I reminisce about that day now, I get a smile from it, as the simple action made that boy’s day. What’s that worth, I don’t know. I also enjoy telling people that this car is the realisation of a childhood dream. I have worked hard, and like anyone had to deal with different adversities as they have come along. I have been a wheelchair user for the last 20 years (rugby injury), but I hope people see my realisation of my dream as an indication that even if a person becomes disabled, in essence, underneath, they are the same person, with the same hopes, dreams and problems as anyone else, but through a lot of hard work, a bit of sacrifice, a certain amount of recognised privilege, and a dash of luck, I realised my dream! It’s great, yes, I always look back at when I have parked, and it always makes me smile!!

Good advice James, the car in my avatar (replica Cobra) sold a few years ago and my current weekend toy 2009 V8 Vantage costs me £300/year fully comp insurance, road tax is £500 and fuel would be a huge cost but remember you don't drive it daily but it will return 23mpg on a cruise. Do your homework, take your time, find a good independent specialist not main dealer, drive a few cars, spread your search net far and wide, get your chosen car inspected (mine cost me £90). I've got kids and they cost me more!! Those that state you can only do 30mph will never get it and are more then likely trolling you. Any car enthusiast who gets a chance to drive cars like these will immediately see the difference and believe me if your currently driving a tun of the mill car (such as my company Outlander) will not believe just how involving super cars can be. But of course if you want ease of use, point n press motoring then stick to your daily modern bore box.....like my outlander.

I’ve had my supercar for nearly 2 weeks, an Aston Martin Rapide S, and you nail the experience perfectly. Especially in the minute starting at 18:00! I’ve had plenty of nice cars and currently own a 20V ur quattro, Z4 M Coupe, and traded a superb Carrera 2 manual 996.2 911 for the Aston. But the Aston is next level. The attention it attracts, and comments from strangers is amazing, and all positive. Definitely a new dimension to car ownership! I was looking for a DB9 when the Rapide S popped up - essentially a stretched more practical version of the DB9, and my choice was vindicated when I easily fitted the car seat for my 4 yr old granddaughter to take her out, although gutted when her only comment was "I want a ice block, granddad” LOL

You should do a video on the car rental market. I see so many people who have expensive cars, yet they do sub 2k miles a year. If you ran the numbers it would be WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better for them to rent the car, do their 3-5 day annual hoon, then hand it back. No insurance, no upfront capital, no servicing, no tax. Yeah, you couldn't say you owned one, but you could truly say you've driven it :) Case in point on your video: That grey R8 - from Sept 2019 to Sept 2020 it did 96 miles. The white R8 - from May 2019 to May 2020 - 163 miles. Your Ferrari - from March 2019 to April 2020 it did 1 mile. 1 mile. (although well done for driving it yourself :) ) The Venturi Atlantique - May 2019 - July 2020 2050 miles. However from May 2018 to May 2019 - 305 miles

You probably have the classic I bought 3 tickets for £18 and expected to win mentality... Fact of the matter is the odds are far better than the majority of other lotteries, UK lotto is 1 in 22'000'000, the last one I played in was 30'000 tickets and I bought 2 so thats a 1 in 15'000 chance... I didn't win but if you visualise a football stadium of 30'000 people and you were to pick one person out that's the same odds. It's luck at the end of the day, I know people that have played car lotteries for 5 years and spent £10k and havent won a damn thing, I also know people that put a few quid on and have won multiple times. Best one was a guy that won a car on click compitions and he bought the max number of tickets (i think it was either 300 or 400) so several thousand pounds worth of tickets and he won and people were crying and moaning it wasnt fair... fucking hilarious, the guy literally spent £5'000 on tickets that he wasn't garenteed to even win. But the boo hoo mentality of its not fair comes into play and people were slamming this guy all because he won.

I’ve changed my opinion recently (I’m 45) and have decided now is the time to buy an expensive car. If you can afford it, the new Ferrari Roma is a super car, but with a bit more class, definitely a GT with Super car performance. Or wait a few years, and you’ll get a bargain, as people will put miles on the Roma. Same as DBS, although I’m not happy with AM build quality tbh.

Funny I remembered a friend of mine who used to have a E46 M3 and once his business went a bit better, he got himself a 997 GT3. According to him, despite he drove more with the Porsche than he did with the M3, the yearly service costs at Porsche in Munich or even in Vienna were cheaper as for his BMW what was entirely service by BMW in Vienna. Good, this was around 10 yrs ago and he upgraded to the GT3 RS later what he still owns. The last time I spoke to him was this summer and he told me that the service costs for his 2018 3.0 TDI Audi A6 are more then for the Porsche and he always ends up arguing with people who won't believe him that. All the service is done by Porsche in either of the big cities I mentioned earlier and he is customer with both since over 10 years. But even as a newcomer he immediately was impressed by their support and the 'low' costs.

Great video, the amount of people I have explained finance to is crazy for them to still discount it entirely and the fact that if you can afford to buy something outright doesn’t necessarily mean you should. I think the negative stigma attached to finance is reducing year by year, if you can’t afford to buy it out right but can afford the monthlys do it, if you can afford to buy it outright dont... invest the money conservatively for a 8-10% return and own the car for “free” ....man maths.

One of the best Ferrari designs all time. A classic now. The power delivery is simply fabulous when you do get a chance to use it, but it's a doddle in traffic. Comfortable, superb driving position, it's simply a fabulous car. And at this moment in time a relative bargain for a Ferrari V12. Sure it eats fuel, but that's the least concern. Yes. in UK, car ownership is essential but in HK it is luxurious. Owning an audi r8 with 4200cc+ displacement of engine costs you a much higher road tax, license fee and insurance. The price tag of the car in the 2nd market is only one of the factor.

Great area of discussion. At a push, I could maybe afford an Aston Martin V8 Vantage, for instance. My issue is - storage. If you don't have a garage, or even a drive, then parking in the street would not fill me with a lot of confidence - doesn't help with the insurance premiums much, either. Also, what is found on most streets - tree's. Having to do battle everyday with protecting your Ferrari red paintwork, from feathered dive bombers, is somewhat of a full-time job.

Superb video there, I was pleasantly surprised by your porsche parts info. I've been thinking about a 996 with knowledge of it's foibles and feeling pressured towards a manual, but, as I don't really want it to drive around like my hair's on fire, maybe I should just look at a tiptronic. If it holds its value while I own it, ace, I've always wanted a 911 and even if it's a less attractive one at least it will be mine. Love the considered take on things, it helps to put things into perspective. 👍

Lots of good info and good points here. Personally I can confirm, you can totally own an exotic with a normal 9-5 (and a spouse who will put up with it). It's all about priorities and resourcefulness. For those who "don't get it" my analogy has always been to compare spending money on an exotic car to spending money on other forms of, let's be honest, 'art'. People will spend preposterous amounts of money on a painting and all that can do is hang on a wall. That 550, for example, is a sculpture, a painting, and a symphony all in one, but it also has the 4th dimension of giving you literal physical sensations that none of the others can. That and by driving it out in the world, you're sharing 3 of those four aspects with other 'art' aficionados with whom you share the roads. (The alternative of putting a Giacometti, a Monet, and a quartet playing Beethoven on a flatbed seems less practical than even the most 'useless Lamborghini).

So say you pick up a £40k 2nd hand supercar. £2k a year warranty, £2k a year service budget. With current interest rates you’ll be paying £2k in interest per year servicing a £40k loan. Plus the depreciation will be something like £4K per year at least. So your total cost of ownership is around £10k per year (plus fuel and insurance)

I could drive hoopties for 25 years and buy a single Ferrari Roma at the end...or I can buy better cars for less earlier and enjoy driving for all 25 of those years. I cannot buy a Ferrari Roma today and pay it off over 25 years; I can't front the downpayment and nobody would finance the rest for long enough such that I can manage the interim costs of ownership.

I’ve owned a generation 2 R8 for 3.5 years. Not that expensive to run and buy. Servicing is a 1/3 of the cost of an equivalent Huracan despite the mechanicals being identical. Wanted a Lamborghini until finding that little nugget out. The biggest problem isn’t necessarily cost of owning it’s just most super cars dont actually get driven and therefore if you pile miles on, the level of interest at sale time will drop as there will always be a load of garage queens out there in competition. That and the test pilots and tyre kickers are a pain in the arse. I now prefer to have an affordable hatch to Chuck around, use and abuse and then get rid. Load less hassle.
@ApothecaryTerry
@ApothecaryTerry 4 жыл бұрын
This is ony reason why I went for a 981 Cayman S. Looks the part, gets the attention but they generally do get driven and I don't feel too bad putting miles on it. Neither does my wallet, which is the other reason I didn't go for more of a supercar- the ones I could afford would still have made me cringe every time I touched the brakes or leant on the tyres. I think that's an important thing- affording them is one thing, but having enough money to enjoy them without worrying is important.
@Hypersonik
@Hypersonik 4 жыл бұрын
@@ApothecaryTerry I disagree. Find a 981 with over 50k miles. It's actually a difficult challenge. Find a 981 GTS with over 50k miles. Near impossible. If you drive your car, you will lose money on it. As AD says, plenty of people who buy their car that they can't afford to run so do no miles in it and thus come trade in time, plenty of 'Garage Queens' your used car (That's actually in better mechanical condition) is up against means a big hit.
@ApothecaryTerry
@ApothecaryTerry 4 жыл бұрын
@@Hypersonik Not especially challenging to find a 981 with over 50k miles, there are 20 of them on Autotrader right now, 1 of which is a GTS. That's one of 22 GTS models on there. Considering that spec came out in 2014 that's 10k miles a year which is quite a lot for a sports car. Obviously driving a car loses money, mileage always causes depreciation on literally any car, but as I said elsewhere- anyone buying these who isn't loaded, should only do so if they can afford to drive them. Relative to a Golf or something, my car will depreciate less, but I'm putting 6-8k miles a year on it so of course it'll drop a chunk of value and that's fine, I bought it to drive, not to look at.

Great little video! You always get people asking how much does it cos to run sports/supercars. Remember running and buying is a diff set of circumstances. You might be able to finance something but running it is a whole diff ball game. For example quite a few years ago I had a last of the line HR 350Z. Not anywhere in the same ballpark as the cars in the video but as an example.... Its insurance wasnt dear.. Few hundred quid meh.. Servicing at specialist, tax.. Expensive 500+.. Common faults (on the Z.. Suspension items)... Fuel super unleaded only, appox 17k miles a year (I used it as it should be aswell as work lol) . Give or take a few hundreds of £££'s over 5 years of ownership (excluding the cost of it used)... It cost £25,000!!! Yeah. Half of that was fuel pretty much. Ive now moved along and upwards but just goes to show.. Some people with very expensive cars might not even spend that lol

Save for a car, then save some more. Always buy your car, never PCP, never buy new. Simple rules will stop you looking back in 20 years realising you could have paid for a super car for what it’s cost you to borrow an M4! Only finance companies win and it allows car companies to just ramp up prices. And if that lot didn’t convince you, think carefully and ask yourself when did it ever make sense to borrow money to pay the government VAT?

Have to agree with you when you mention fuel. It is a bit of a myth that fuel has gone up more than the standard R.P. I. and all cars, particularly performance cars, have far higher fuel efficiency than those from previous generations. My Dad’s Ford Zodiac Mark 3 could only average between 16 -18 mpg. It had 114 bhp and weighed 1350 kg. My 1972 mini 1000 with 38 bhp averaged only 36 -38 mpg...... 🤷‍♂️

My experience would suggest this is true, except for the one round Australia road trip we did, which was utterly epic and exceeded all expectations of my dream Ferrari. And it’s that that’s helped temper the financial devastation that it was. In 1 year I did as many Km’s as the previous owner did in 8 years. Great memories. So there’s two sides to the coin.
