i started messing around 3d as a hobby in 2014 i was 18, u know just messing around with the softwares but never taking it seriously. i sucked. i was addicted to video games and was wasting time in college. i was deeply passionate about video games for all through out my life i loved the art, i wanted to be an artist for games. however i sucked at anything in art but when i was about 22/23 years old i was lost in life, i had to decide what i will do for my career, and that brought me back to 3d sculpting/modeling. grinded my ass off for 3-4 years to git gud and now i land a job as a jr 3d character artist in a studio. getting the job was the easier part, staying in this job is the harder part. they constantly challenge me out of my comfort zone. I always get late submissions as a result. im kinda fucked now tbh. but im trying my best to learn and keep up with the studio im working for. hopefully they wont cut me off. but if they do ill acccept it and improve more. thank u for the motivation ! edit. why do i want to work in the industry? is because i love games, i love the art and im passionate about making a good character. i want to make a character that will make people happy or even inspire them in life. for all throughout my life i didnt have a good childhood nor teenage life due to constant bullying/family problems. i realize that video games made me happy , kept me alive and gave me hope to live as i was inspired by the characters and the happiness while playing the games. i want to share the same joy to other people :)

when you were referring to Renaissance age min 10/15, you were talking about "Botteghe artigiane". There is a beautiful book that explains the artist's life in Florence during that age. The book is called "Il mondo degli artisti nel Rinascimento fiorentino. Committenti, botteghe e mercato dell'arte " :)

5:10 this right here, man I wish I had that. I really hope those of you who have had that don't take this for granted. Not having that has set me back so many years (I'm 28 years old now and still haven't broken into the industry), having to fend for myself, going through trials and errors, scurrying for whatever resources I could find to learn 3D, because the community college I ended up going to didn't/doesn't have a good 3D program. In the end I've learned it's out of my control and learned to embrace this path, it has been nothing but a character building experience and has humbled me and continues to do so... it is something I know that I will overcome but that doesn't change the fact that it really sucks haha

Stuff that resonated to me a lot. Thank you for doing this series of podcasts! 33:36 'It's not something you can do with a plan (to become a character artist, work in a certain studio) because the challenges on your way is gonna change your destiny.' 37:02 'Not knowing is actually was more helpful to me because I wasn't ready for some stuff and I figured out what to do on the way.' 57:02 'No matter your situation if you can focus on being alive and appreciative in the now, that's really the key to life because life is just a sequence of now.' - Attributed to Sam Harris

Happy Birthday Siamak! Your beard is ultra epic! Great talk :::) A lot of juniors should aim to get a job in kid series first, even if they think or are really good concept artists-they could do Bgs or layout etc. It will get them use to a pipeline feel & ease into what is to come. Plus a lot of studios are setting an impressive bar for these shows- hopefully it comes with a healthy, less stressful environment. After a few years and growing your portfolio- then definitely go for, I guess, more prestigious studios or film, step it up a notch. Be prepared for more OT. Just give yourself time if need be. Once you get use to the game it will make you more comfortable in the industry, working as an artist -as Jay stated. Thank God we have updated software! I jumped into 3d around 2009-2010 on Maya. It hurt some days haha….😢

Wicked conversation. You both touched upon stuff I've been ruminating on for years. Happy to have listened along & basically reorient my own thoughts & feelings about this career choice once again. ( Especially about living more in the present... ) I got to say though, It's almost scary to hear others have similar or about the same thoughts/relationship to this creative field & how it fuels us in some sense. ( At least personal work fuels me... Those chicken nuggets, even after your story I'm still not gonna change them from the "Necessary Evil" category. ;] )

Hey it may be a bit irrelevant but I've always wanted to do character designing/concept art but also love 3d character art but all the character artist/concept I see do 2d and I donno if I should completely switch to 2d. But there's also artists like wlop who used both mediums I'm at this point where I am confused as I don't have much time to do art since I'm studying architecture, so I have to pick one medium I think as if I did both mediums my progress would be slow
